They were likely influenced by older works
Now, there is stuff like doppelganger, the Fetch (irish), Susanoo, the werewolf - but I'm not talking about literal examples
These older games are based on actual heroism and mythology, and every hero has a darker side, their thought process was probably that adding that kinda stuff would make the character more mythological and add depth to them - and it does
