His quest for revenge resulted in an untold amount of mortals being caught in the crossfire. Killing Poseidon flooded large swathes of Greece, for one. Killing each God had immense ramifications but Kratos didn't care. It wasn't until the end when he had the opportunity to destroy the power of the Greek Pantheon entirely that he realized what he's done was horrendous. He killed himself to hand the reins of destiny back to the mortals. He was already a "better man" by the end of 3. Though it was a horrendous cop out that he lived, and kinda invalidated the sacrifice he made to salvage some good out of the damage he'd wrought.
