>>740298218Look at the symbolism and metaphors>World is being kept alive being fed something that's less effective with each use.>Some people afraid of the dark.>World is getting tired and falling apart>Rotting in real time>So bad the world itself is hallucinating.>Time keeps jumping and folding. It's like insomnia, or slamming energy drinks instead of resting to remain "productive". But you can't keep the metaphorical flame lit forever, you gotta close your eyes eventually. It's also a meta narrative about a franchise that keeps going without being given rest. You gotta leave the world behind so something else can be born.
>>740298605sure that all tracks (and of course it's a pretty standard mahayana buddhist moral lesson, which miyazaki loves)but what's up with the profaned flame? what was even the point of having that in the fucking plot?how are the demon princes still alive at the end of time long after the chaos flame is dead? and the lesser demons for that matter. they're all at peak performance, completely unfazed by anything.why do pilgrims turn into angels?why don't the primordial serpents ever even bother to show up?what was even the point of dark souls 2 other than setting up that one party encounter at the end of the game?these are all rhetorical questions of course, i know they don't have answers. the meta-narrative makes sense, but there's quite a lot of pretense to having more substance than that. i played elden ring, kings field, sekiro, armored core and even demon souls, and all of these have nested themes that rhyme with the meta-narrative. they have coherent world-building. after making it through all 3 games, dark souls feels hollow. like more than any other game except for bloodborne, the world and interpretive story feel like a ghostly thin draping that doesn't even classify as a potemkin village.the meta-narrative is solid, it's the fact that this concludes Dark Souls' world building, and that specific world building that i have a problem with.
