The Japanese didn’t take games very seriously, they copied American advertising material or movies without any shame because they developed each piece of software in two or three months and then moved on to the next one. No one had any illusions that those games would stand the test of time or become culturally significant.
In fact, even today, many of the Japanese pioneers don’t realize that their creations have fans all over the world, a fact highlighted in that book about the untold story of Japanese developers, where everyone is amazed to learn that the software they created with almost no thought behind it was able to win over so many foreign fans.
