MMO genre fans play single players games now. Since we hate everyone else as a society it isn't exciting meeting real people and their avatars online now. It's more fun to meet the NPC characters that have a nice story and personality created for them. And you can focus on the RPG mechanics and actual gameplay without it being mainly about other people and their politics and PvP ganking and all the other immersion breaking shit MMOs became plagued with where skill and story are the least important things
