Why are western developers lacking in imagination compared to their Asian counterparts?
>>740321946Compare FPS before AAA and after. People with imagination lost their jobs so the suckers of today could have it.

>>740324773True, only comics it helped was Batman, it wasn't goofy or too dark in the 80s, it hit the sweet spot. (realistic character concept demands realistic grounding, even if its later taken to ridiculous levels, see Baki.) Punisher also started as a serious character type so there's no complaints to that either, tone doesn't make a series less silly it just makes it more edgy. People wanted extreme edgy content (90s OVAs, anyone?), not just silly capeshit content where people come back from the dead constantly.

>>740324348The moral of the story anon, is that all "cool shit" comes from an original perfect source. The greeks had a word for it ἀρχέτυπον or εἶδος the ideal essence or first form of an idea.Everything that has come after has been a copy of a copy and with each copy it has strayed from that ideal first form.

>>740323974On one hand, I see why. And a lot of what made old western games good was because of similar philosophy. Richard Garriott always wanted his games to really bring you to a fantasy world and do things like you were part of that world, and I think that influenced a lot of future leads in that field. But on the other hand, it didn't age as well with the changing times and skill levels of new people in the industry, while the "crazy" stuff in Japanese stuff did, and it made it easier to build on for future material. For example, in a western game, it's great at emulating reality, but that comes with too many of the actual foibles that make reality grounded. In a JP game you have some inexplicable absurdities, but it's usually done for gameplay or at least tonal reasons, like having the ability to summon a deity mid-combat, or the world getting shit by a laser and then being fine on the next turn.Ultimately it comes up to preference, and I find that mine can enjoy both a game with connections to reality and a game like Ace of Seafood.
>>740322817>I still see pic related from both sides so idgafBullshit. Western games have zero attractive women of any species.

>>740326921Yeah, and it's easily observed even through just looking at scifi or fantasy art from the time, whether it be from game covers or even book and music albums.Pic related. Westoids bought into the retarded lie that you have to be a boring drone as an adult and you can't be imaginative or find things cool. It's extremely childish when you think about it and yet this is the view that is commonoly considered "normal" in westoid media and culture at large.
If The Punisher got a video game today, he would be called Phranque Castle.
>>740329609>It was a lot more in line with things like the Japanese cover of The Guardian Legend and really highlights how things harbored some pretty neat fictional designs that have no grounding in reality, at least to the point of functionality.Definitely, there was a lot of dream like and nightmare like inspiration in tons of western fantasy, and even dnd, as "generic" as people think it is, was an extremely fantastical "setting"(or rather had some within it like spelljammer as an example). What I think is happening with todd there is that hes mistaking the things that he was into, as being the standards, and has lost touch with the wider nature of western fantasy, especially as things like the lotr movies at the turn of the century made that variety of fantasy more popular for a time. Theres nothing explicitly wrong with lower fantasy. But it hit at a time when people started being ashamed for liking wilder ideas thinking they needed to be less childish (with some of the changes the comic scene was going through for instance)But the varied ideas of fantasy never died or went away.Things like your picture are a great example, and there were tons of artists just desperately penning their fever dreams to paper. >>740331958>The rest like supes and other goofy super characters, they are perfectly fine playing it their way.Thats true, and the good thing is you can still have a serious moment that feels good and earned within the overall tone of a supe series. I've always liked how superman has managed to occasionally pull out those moments (even in the modernish era)Like when shazam revealed his true form to superman. The comic before that from supermans perspective had been a pretty lighthearted time where he exchanged some light hearted banter with shazam while they worked against that, I think it was a cult? Its been a while. But the way it proceeded from there to my memory felt like the author really "got" superman. The shazam side of the story was a bit edgier but I still think it worked overall conceptually because the writing didnt feel ironic or insecure about itself

>>740331695Who? Not everyone that disagrees with you is your pet /v/schizo.>>740331793I wouldn't say "style is substance" but it certainly signals it and is closely related to it. I think Americans did do it well at one point just going off of shit like Doom, the Red Faction series, Saint's Row, Lands of Lore, the OG Prey and a lot of AA IPs from the mid-late 90s to late 2000s/early 2010s that incorporated a lot of genuinely novel gameplay mechanics into the greater world and made fun interesting worlds and games. The problem is that at some point in the late 2000s, the AAA industry took over and did away with the type of imaginative, creative nerd that made games great and in the process made the larger gaming world essentially a corporate pipeline to churn out products on par with the homogenized shit you see in supermarkets rather than worthwhile creative products that games should be. So now in order to get people to buy games, they have to market to absolutely everybody and get rid of anything that might alienate anyone, which makes it for no one, and also focus on the actual creative parts of the games. It's been a solid decade and a half since an American game had any sense of artistic vision or unity and just as long since it did AAA western games did something cool or worthwhile. Even Japanese games that end up being very similar in some ways have enough to differentiate them that you can tell the differences between a Nier, Persona, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts or SMT game for example. American games are literally all the same now because the running philosophy behind them isn't to make something artistically worthwhile come into fruition, but just sell the lowest quality product at the highest price.>>740332648Salty Americoid spotted

>>740329990It's just a trickle down effect of a bunch of different standards in the west that lead to a specific set of things being taboo, with threads that tie into what an ideal man/woman acts like and how "growing up" means discarding what you once held dear in favor of what the world demands for living as an adult. Why? They'll give every reason under the sun, but they all boil down to "Because that's not how things are done" in more or less words.I know it sounds like cope reasoning by a loser, and I guess it is, but it's best to just know that the western world will always be predominantly skewed towards realism and boring things, because people want that. >>740324253Not arguing asians steal IPs they love that shit and it's not stopped but this is pretty garbage for examples. The watch industry is basically nothing but people imitating million dollar watches imitating hundred thousand dollar watches imitating thousand dollar watches. All of the clothing ones seem to imply making the same style years later is somehow dodgy, hope you're not wearing jeans I guess. But the one that gets me is the worldcat logo because that's mildly interesting as an example of how generic bland logos are inherently terrible. Worldcat and the CSA Japan have no related fields, and their logo has nothing to do with what either does, but they've both stumbled upon the 10 IQ idea of a swirly with rainbow colours and could fuel a few years of lawyer salaries over this stupid fucking thing. >>740330958There's endless examples of it as well, even in redos of covers done to appease marketers you still have measured absurdity and cool factor elements that aren't trying to clip the wings of the subject matter so it will land squarely in reality or reality-adjacent plausibility in regards to fiction. This charcoal-chalk work is from 1878. Its "out of fashion" compared to more sleek depictions, yet the fact remains it looks good and gives us a good sense of scale
>>740339914I never read WotW but I did read The Tripods which was probably inspired by the book and had similar/same moving entities.
>>740340804Highly recommend the book. There will be things in it that make you think "Man, why does no adaptation include this?". It's funny that the one that comes close is the musical of all things.
>>740336991Invincible is boring if you dont care about the soap opera drama, like all the fights are just generic superman punch shit and any character with an interesting power either dies or does fuck all
>>740321946DEI funding and woke culture means the west literally isn't allowed to create anything new
>>740324348Okay now, there is only so many angles you can depict an undead army.
>>740323974I enjoy both, although the overall writing in both are very formulaic. In Japanese games you kill God, in western games you must begrudgingly kill the villain because you know them or some shit.
>>740342016>comes close is the musical of all things.Musicals, while they are stage productions for an audience, probably dont have AS much meddling as a hollywood film, so changes and or inclusions are probably more in control of the people involved, at least Id imagine. But yeah Ill put that on the list, I really need to expand my reading horizons

>>740337581Nta but I always thought he was a spaniard. I never looked into it tonactually know, so im not sure where i got that idea.
>>740322845My issue with western comic characters is more often than not we are TOLD they are cooler than they appear. Whereas in manga we the readers also think they are shit until we are SHOWN they are a badass. Take Plastic Man as my case. His power doesnt sound awful, but he is presented as a dumb goofball so your natural inclination is to beleive he is worthless. But then other characters like Batman SAY>if he got serious, he would totally be the biggest threatAs an alternative take Shikamaru from Naruto. Who is consistently shown to be a lazy slacker with a weak team-focused ability. And then we get his fight against Temari where we see him dunk on her, and realise he is far more capable than he lets on. And they story echoes this when he is promoted before everyone else. This is the reason I could never get into comics and cartoons to any real degree. They all share this problem.
>>740339914Doesn't hold a candle to the stupidly awesome 1998 Jeff Wayne's WotW RTS
>>740351267Love the fuck out of that game and design, just wished it looked less mechanical. Book described the legs moving almost like wheels with the way they quickly stride over themselves.COME ON THUNDER CHILD
