This game is literally like stepping in a time machine back to like 2004. It feels like an older game in all the right ways, challenging and satisfying but not in a rollslop way with constant boss runbacks, all the little fun mini-games, creative puzzles, the old-school bossfights, all the little secrets and trinkets, the charming characters, and the complete lack of any political bullshit or wokeslop anywhere in the game. And it just keeps getting better and better the more you play. The final two dungeons in particular and the ending are just PEAK. Easy GotY.
>>740322465It even has a cheesy story with a very predictable plot. Normally that would be a negative but imo it's a great attention to detail because every GBC game was like this.

I finished Mina a few days ago, and I would give it a solid 7/10. I felt the same about Shovel Knight, so this is in line with my expectations of YCG.It's good, well worth playing for $20, but I'm genuinely mystified how anyone could think this belongs in GOTY conversations. I grew up playing this kind of game and have a deep affinity for the whole console adventure genre, and I found the GBC art style charming and well done, but there are a shockingly high number of baffling design decisions. The implementation of sidearms is legit one of the worst major systems I've seen in a recent game, to the point that I just ignored them after a while. The difficulty scaling is completely out of whack, where the first 5 hours are really punishing, after which point combat becomes rather trivial and challenge only comes from platforming. The game overall is opaque to a fault, where I spent the bulk of my playtime just searching for the entrances to the generator dungeons, combing over the same handful of hub areas trying to figure out what crevice I missed. Also, small gripe, but barely any of the achievements are tied to game progression, mostly being about gimmicky utilization of sidearms. I'm one of only 4.5% of players on Steam to have finished it, but only have 14% of total achievements. And again, i didn't hate the game, but by the end I was ready for it to be over. I finished in around 18 hours with 66% completion, and honestly don't have any real desire to revisit it.

>>740337865>Maybe try playing the game? Well now that I know it's not wokeslop, maybe I will
Playing the game for the first time, the main problem is that the main gimmicks don't work. Like, a big chunk of the game is based around jumping. In a goddamn top-down 2D game where you cannot tell something's z-level. Hint: There's a reason why Zelda reserved jumping for gimmick segments. That would be bad enough, but they added a second gimmick for burrowing. That one is much better conceptually, but having to design everything to account for both jumping and burrowing makes it a clusterfuck. Visual communication is very poor and it's hard to tell which objects require which gimmick to bypass. On top of all that, the games adds an overcomplicated Bloodborne-esque healing system which is completely unnecessary. In short, the game has too much conflicting shit in it. It's like they had no confidence in the core gameplay so they kept adding random shit in. It's the exact opposite of how games in this era were designed.
>>740338757I was wrong, but you know who I meant. It's odd to pretend otherwise
>>740336996She's so straight-laced i dunno if she has any flaws or strengths honestly

>>740338958It definitely would be better if it was edited down to something more coherent and focused. You're right about the visual communication too.
>>740338958The perspective can be a bit confusing especially for flying enemies, but as far as I understand, outside of flying enemies, it's literally just their entire hitbox though, like there is no depth basically. You get used to it as it goes on, and the mechanics work really well once you get them down.

>>740351394The assertion was that the game will have a long tail. How much money has already been made is completely irrelevant to that part of the discussion. But if you factor in Steam's 30% cut and if you consider that office rental costs may or may not have been part of the game's budget, it's not guaranteed that it has turned a profit. I'll believe them if they have said so, but if we're just guessing, it is quite possible it hasn't seen a profit yet.>I'm calling you retarded because you ARE retarded. And you think that because you're too much of a moron to understand what I'm saying.
>>740351841The numbers don't apply in the same way as they do to game that thrives on player retention, but no they're not worthless. I'm not an expert at interpreting steam charts but it seems to me that it should be rising or leveling so soon after release. It's, what, a 10-20 hour game? It's too soon for most players who bought it on release day to be done with it, and it should be gaining more players too.
>>740352405They said literally said if they sold 100k they would have to fire people and if they go higher than that they dont. They sold 300k in 3 days and it's still a stop seller on the switch. They're gonna be fine.
This game will not have legs. Hollow Knight did because it was the best in its genre. Mina doesn't even know what genre it wants to be.
>>740352072> I bought the video game. and I am not actively playing the video gameBut you will play that game, and your playthrough of that game will be displayed on a chart, one hour sessions? They spent 5 million bucks on it.Assuming zero fees or taxes (they definitely paid fees and taxes), 300k sales at $20 a pop means $6m, which barely makes back the budget.Of course there ARE fees and taxes, so profit goes out the window and we don't know how many sales they'll get in the future either. How long until they make back the money they spent? Who knows. Also, 3k reviews is amazing for a no-name indie game, but Shovel Knight was so massive that it was THE indie hit, the poster child for indie games as a whole for a while, even becoming an assist trophy in Smash and being a collab in a whole bunch of indie games.Them releasing a game to 3k kinda mid reviews is fairly mindblowing.Honestly though, the more I read about YCG and Mina, the more it just sounds like they needed to pad out some time to not die, rather than releasing Mina to make big bank, it's why they reduced the price from $30 to $20 and why they're not planning any DLC for it, it's just some half-finished side project they had laying around that they quickly rushed to finish and chuck out the door so they can get back to working on Shovel Knight 3D or whatever.>>740356027>53 reviewsFuck no.

How does this game have buzz, rave reviews etc, yet it seems like no one's playing it
>>740367534Nvm, figured out I can just do the three underlab related hard modifiers. The other two don't even matter as they are just three progressively harder tiers of the same modifier and there is a separate achievement for not entering underlabs as well, so you can get 3 hard modifiers + that achievement all in one
I still wish the game was consistently more difficult. Gets too easy by the time you've beaten barely half the spark bosses unless you nerf yourself. Still a great fucking game though.

I for one am happy that the game came out and is relatively good. People constantly comparing it to Silksong are missing the forest for the trees. Not every game needs to be a critical and financial record setter, otherwiser I could condemn all indie games for not matching to the sales and acclaim of Terraria or it's big brother, Minecraft.I know you guys hate the devs because they donated to BLM and you hate noggers and whatnot, but separate the art from the artist.

Anyone else think this was a weird modifier to include?
Okay, base game I 100% with mainly just the whip.My NG+ Speedrun/Modifier run I did with the Shield. What weapon should I use for -1%? I feel like the whip is safest and I'm used to it, but hammer does seem tempting especially with big damage being needed with no other trinkets/upgrades around. And I do like me some big hammer in other games.I can't upgrade the base weapon, so I imagine the swords are just not worth it at all. Even if I used the weapon randomizer, the gun seems too weak without the charge shot option and the shield is too dangerous without proper trinkets.
>NG+>hard modifiers for no underlabs>underlabs appear way less often too>can't refill vials without dying>lost my sparks to random shit and now I'm at zero sparks with the only way to retrieve them either to manually hunt all of them down or level up (which requires a shit ton of bones I have to earn consecutively without dying or I lose them all)>almost no checkpoints in entire dungeons>can't swap out trinkets due to no underlab>also doing no shop so can't refill vials at merchants (I think those counts as shops..?)bros... it's too difficult.... I might have to tap out....
>>740373995No actually I love yacht club because they cut out all the problematic ableist challenge from NES games
ng+fags get the soap
>>740374921forgot to mention...>getting a generator actually cucks you by force turning your bones into bonestone because now they are inaccessible without underlabfeels bad man..
>>740374921>can't swap out trinkets due to no underlabDoes the no shop modifier also disable the trinket chest inside that store? If so, damn.
>>740374994People love Yoshi for doing the same thing.
>>740374921I did all that plus the speedrun at the same time.A big thing is your build. You need to have a solid one for generalist stuff before starting the NG+ cause you carry that over and are stuck with it the whole time. Mine was>Burrow Codex (fairly helpful, but I probably could have gone with something better)>Soles (NECESSARY, LIKE HOLY SHIT WATER AND ICE SUCKS WITHOUT THEM)>Proto Spark (100% NECESSARY, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING)>Air Dash Cape (Very necessary, though I suppose you could swap it for the spider or some similar tool for getting past large gaps)>Floaty (NECESSARY, LETS YOU SURVIVE AND SKIP SO MUCH)>Dodge Pendulum (Very helpful, but I was using SHield so it was super useful when I needed to panic out. Could be replaced with another good one for combat)After the build, the second biggest thing IMO is to SAVE SCUM HARD. The reason Proto Spark is the most important thing in the whole list is because it's your warning sign to give up. Try to clear every room you can without taking any or at least not too many hits. If you take too much damage or the Proto Spark goes off, you pause immediately and quit to title screen then spam start to get back in. You'll start in the same room with everything reset. It only saves when you transition a room or die fully.Same goes for bosses. The moment your spark breaks, spam pause to reset. You want to ideally beat each boss without losing it, but if they're like a pixel away and you know you can make it, have some balls and try or give up, it's up to you.Whenever you wind up low on healing vials, find the next checkpoint and kill yourself as close to it as possible to get all the vials and the proto spark back if you lost it in a boss fight. Some rooms are HELL. But you can keep resetting and learning. Really watch the enemy patterns and try to find the safest way to fight, not necessarily the quickest. I was doing the Speedrun, so I was skipping almost all unnecessary fights.
>>740362184I did my Lopsided achievement on my no shopping run. Had 3/10/3 by the end of the Bayou. I did Crypt > Bayou
>>740375878I just didn't realize it was an achievement at first. If I had I would have done it on my first 100% run.But it should work out for the -1% one since getting both maxed is the only thing I can do to make the run easier at that point. I'll probably start attack since my Speedrun taught me a lot about just "not getting hit".
>>740374897I tried whip initially then restarted with hammer, but I also prefer hammer overall so maybe it's the opposite for you. Though if I did it again I'd buy buster immediately and run with that.
>>740375819Yeah I think I'm going to reload, I didn't get 100% and don't have some of the best trinkets. Might have to just go for the shops separately. -1% is supposed to be the hardest by far though, so if I'm struggling right now, Idk if I would be able to do that. The lack of underlabs in NG+ is really annoying though, like I get to Bayou and there is no underlabs anyfuckingwhere, so I have to go all the way from Ossex whenever I die, good idea on the savecopying/scumming, used to do that all the time back in the day when trophy hunting, do every scummy tactic in the book lmao

are people really going for 100% without a guide? You just backtrack through every area and scour every inch or what?
>>740379253One of the things you purchase gives a collectible radar that indicates if something that contributes to 100% is in the current or adjacent room. It's not that hard to just run through each area once to see if that gets set off.
>>740379253>You just backtrack through every area and scour every inch or what?correct
>>740377278It's a classic Souls trick that works well here. When it doubt, quit out and reset. Better to restart than lose your stuff. Mina's at least nice enough to load you back into the room you were in immediately.I'm starting my -1% and the gist of it isn't so bad after having gotten so much practice in my last run. The idea is you can't pick up too many things. You have to reach the end and then pawn off items, including starting stats (you technically start with some heart containers, joule ammo things, your healing vials, etc), till you hit -1%. Can't even check if you're there though cause the skull for seeing % is it's own collectable that adds to the %.The method YCG told The Completionist youtube channel itself was:>Start a new file>Pick your best weapon of the 3 starting ones, then proceed through the introduction>Get to the town and grind bones till you can buy a second spark, not for survival, but to open the tailor shop>Save up more bones to buy the cloak that gives +25% health>Go through the game avoiding everything else till Queen's Crypt>Get the Proto Spark there and use it as your only Trinket>Proceed through the game with just that and leveling up your stats to max (they don't add to Completion%>Before the final boss, copy the save, then go sell whatever you feel like you can to Pawnty to lower your Completion % then face the final boss
>>740379253If I had to purely hunt and peck like that I would've gone for a guide. The map and skull eliminate a lot of tedium, and everything has context clues.
>>740379253>>740379430This. The item that shows you nearby collectibles was huge.Though even with that the FUCKING AUTOSCROLLER IN THE DAMN WORM took me like a solid hour of looking before I gave up and looked up where the thing I was missing was.The fucking stairs in one of the moving walls. A 1 tile long stairs that hides a hole in the wall. All for just that last gem.
>>740379430That includes every single bone gem too, and "in this room" is very vague especially since majority of items require a path that originates from another room. surprisingly there isn't even a feat for 100%, just for all trinkets and upgrades.
>>740379559Yeah that's what I was thinking, you can use a small amount of items for everything up to the final boss, but considering you have to sell story items, I'm not sure how much leeway you actually have for upgrades/trinkets. Honestly I'm not sure if it would be that hard, because you can farm to max level, use unlimited underlabs, really the only thing is losing a few good trinkets, and also having less HP due to no roses. Also I would probably take steady soles over the spark for most sections.
>>740366391It's 300k total, I don't know where you got "300k on Steam" from. Maybe you're confusing the 55k number.
>>740379559Personally I didn't grab anything at all because I didn't know how much I'd have to sell and didn't want to cuck myself unknowingly raising the % in the early game, until I got to the very end of the game and thought it'd probably be a good idea to grab the Proto Spark then finished the game at 0% and learned I either had to sell my vials or sell enough roses to get OHKO'd, neither of which was worth having Proto SparkIf you grab nothing extra I believe you have to sell at least 7 items. If I were going to do it again I think I'd grab either extra vials + Super Jump from Panino, or an extra key + Wallower + Fishing Rod (I have no idea if Rod adds to it, but it's visible on file select so I assume it does), because having to do all platforming with no mobility trinkets sucksalternately, Joule Syringe + double sidearm (probably Echo Dagger + Mist Jar) probably works fine for cheesing if you don't mind instantly dying for messing up
>>740379679I spotted that immediately on my first run through thankfully, can totally see that driving people mad looking for it.
Finished it earlier and thought it was okay. The whip is the only good weapon, most of the side arms are useless, continuous burrowing being tied to a trinket is retarded, some enemies do an absurd amount of damage even with maxed defense and the defense cloak, what can and can't hit you during burrowing seems inconsistent and nonsensical, the "twist" is incredibly obvious, and Mina is a non-character, ending was kinda funny though. Credits said I had 80% item completion but I have no desire to go back and get the shit I missed or do NG+. Definitely worse than Shovel Knight but it was alright for $20.
>>740380174>>740380308yeah, the point is you just wanna limit as much as possible. Proto Spark lets you have 2 hits essentially for the final boss, even if you sell all your healing items. In the video from the Completionist, he sold all his vials and other things and ended up at -4%, so there's certainly wiggle room.Soles would be nice, but if I have to choose between the two, I'm taking Proto Spark. The environments are all designed to be clearable. But the enemy AI is some real bullshit at times so I'd rather have the extra life. Especially since it lets me have a warning to reset the game if I'm not in a boss fight or something like that.
>>740381365For the final boss I recommend keeping 3 vials, selling 2 roses, then sell everything else. Everything is a 2hko with default~-2 roses so you have room to potentially take five hits in the fight. Trinket pouch + Proto Spark costs either 2 vials or enough roses to enter 1hko range, so it's not really meaningful.
It took me way too long to figure out how to get to the beach.
