Cuphead also had great gameplay and boss design. This is not the Cuphead sequel (which they also are making), this is just a spin-off. Obviously that hand-drawn artstyle is extremely intensive so makes sense they optimize for something a bit simpler for the 8-bit spin-off

My theory is that these days is just insanely hard to find people that want to work in hand draw project, one of the biggest criticism of the DLC is that it was too short and they worked on that after the CUPHEAD BOOM
>>
>>740369285
They're probably doing what they're supposed to do, with all the money Cuphead brought in, get their affairs in order, chip away at the DLC and they knew there was a show coming down the pipe which probably involved red tape type shit.

They did a fucking puppet show to explain that they now have a B-team putting a new game out soon. They have a B-team so they can work on drawing bro.

The problem with Cuphead imitators is that they want to ape off of Cuphead's success without acknowledging that the reason Cuphead is liked is highly detailed hand-drawn animation.

the ideal would be to keep it authentic to old systems but not shy away from improvements (e.g. diagonal attack so you don't end up with gay fake difficulty like nes metroid, castlevania, and ninja gaiden)

>the reason Cuphead is liked is highly detailed hand-drawn animation.
There's way more than just burning millions on animation dum-dum
>expressive characters with personality. crazy contorted faces, psychotic grins and smiles of glee, pained screams, etc. and full of touches like king dice's defeat animation with his hands looking like they're alive and groveling
>a plot that justifies the game existing, even if it's quite shallow (retrieving contracts). helps put into perspective why everyone is so belligerent
>fleshed out setting. levels fit right with the isles. nothing seems really out of place (even the robot feels like it followed design conventions from back in the day)
>quality lively soundtrack that nails the '30s cartoon atmosphere
>crispy sound effects
>snappy controls and enjoyable mechanics (jumping, shot types, parry, EX attacks, etc.)
>not frustrating to play. no gay fake difficulty and you've got several shot types to tune your experience. extra challenge with P-ranks but no need to fret about lives and continues
Cuphead is way more than just "theatrical quality cartoon"

>>740385056
This actually looks sick as hell, an extraordinarily high amount of effort. Never even heard of this before.
>>
>>740393964
>gay fake difficulty like nes metroid, castlevania, and ninja gaiden
Ninja Gaiden and Castlevania aren't fake difficulty, and even Metroid is designed around the limited moveset it has. Ninja Gaiden wouldn't be Ninja Gaiden without forcing you to do better and punishing you for haphazardly slashing around, and neither would Castlevania be the same game if it gave you a gun and diagonals like Contra.
>enemy variety, placement, and attack patterns
Achieving this under heavy limitations is what caused old games to be creative in the first place. Of course, picking the Master System is an extreme of its own, compared to a 16-bit system, GBA, PS1 or so on, but if the developers have a liking towards that specifically, let's see them try their best. The original La Mulana wasn't an MSX game, but it was done by developers that wanted it to be one, and tried to follow every limitation they could, along with trying to design it like a game of the time.
>>
>>740383691
I'm curious if it's actually a NES game
>>
>>740393964
Makings games for retro platforms is interesting for a number of reasons, it's cool to see developers work within those constraints but they also can push the hardware way more than most commercial releases ever did. I recently played Mega Man the Sequel Wars and it goes well above and beyond Capcom's work on the Wily Wars.
