It's one of the greatest platformers of all time. Just because it has some slight pacing issues (which aren't an issue for a vast majority of the game) doesn't mean it's a bad game.

did you beat it?

I mean in '99 all you had was this, Mario, Banjo, Croc, and Spyro for 3D collecting platformers.

It's as good as those. You almost have to play it with the real N64 controller because it was made for that weird little analog stick, probably controls like shit on an emulator.
>>
>>740389774
Yes anon, want to make a bet about what filtered me? Maybe it was the horrid controls
Maybe it was the shit gameplay
Maybe it was the retarded camera (and people got the fucking nerve to constantly mock mario 64 camera when dk 64 exists? Fuck)
>>
>>740389917
it was unfun to move around in dk64 on the real system too. i wonder if the rerelease will at least fix important shit popping in only when its 5ft away. i remember shit that you need to jump to didn't even pop in until you're half way through the jump
>>
>>740390556
>rerelease
>having fixes at all
Considering it's Nintendo at the rudder, they will probably break things instead.
>>
>>740389917
>It's as good as those
It fucking isn't
>>
Haven't played it, but everything I've ever seen of it looks like shit and I don't understand what people see in it. Is it pure nostalgia?
>>
>>740390792
It's literally the DK Rap
>>
>>740390792
the people saying it's good are doing a joke. they are all laughing in the shared spirit of knowing that they will trick some people into playing it. they will use tricks they have seen work like pointing to 'good reviews at the time' banking on people around here thinking that things were better in the past so reviews must have been real (they were actually written by 17-20 year olds who got flown out to play it and probably were on a plane/in a hotel for the first time in their life and also already instilled with 'rare is perfect' distortion field). Dk64 was like the phantom menace. people who saw it didn't feel excited but it was star wars so they couldn't understand why. they thought they themselves must have had something wrong with them on that day. only later did the reality that a meh sw film came out start to gel
>>
>>740390792
no one sees anything in it
people who claim it doesn't suck balls haven't played it since they were 5 years old so they have no memory of what the game is actually like
>>
>>740391120
Truth. I wanted to love dk64 as a kid, DKC1+2+3 were my favourite games and I still went back to play then despite having an n64. but I never once in my life completed dk64.
>>
I played it like one month ago. Worst camera, controls, physics and minigames I have ever seen. Also infinite tedium from doing the same thing over and over with different characters, which are pretty much clones apart from some special abilities.

This with the N64 controller was fucking dogshit. Only Mario 64 was good with it.
>>
>>740390721
Yes it is. You're just being a bitter fag about it because some youtuber told you collecting stuff was bad
>>
>>740391509
BK, Spyro, Crash, etc. are all miles better games. Even fucking Conker is better than DK64
>>
>>740390792
It was pretty impressive when it came out thing is looking back none of it actually holds up
The real gem was Castlevania 64
>>
>>740391432
yeah, it would have been dogshit if you were holding it like that lmao
>>
>>740390698
It still baffles me how in the fuck they managed to do this when not only have they had better emulators traditionally even with N64 games but somehow they managed to build a early 06 PJ64 tier emulator on the fucking Switch.
>>
Played it in the lead up to Bananza. It wasn't too bad. Beaver bother is absolute dogshit though
>>
Great game

Leaving the game's problems aside, i'm impressed with the game's dynamic lightning. I remember some people saying the expansion pack only served to avoid some kind of game breaking memory crash but it's obvious the rest of the n64 games don't have the crazy vertex lightning tricks of this game. It looks quite spectacular in places with torches and shaky downlights.

Another thing i'm enjoying about the game is that it's quite fucking funny to me. All the little silly sounds the beavers make and the animations for certain enemies are very entertaining. I understand that the game would be a nightmare if you're a completionist, but i'm not bothered about not getting every single thing and the game so far is quite fun.

Literally the worst DK game of all time and it is not even close. To be fair that also speaks to how high quality the DK series is in general but still.

>I understand that the game would be a nightmare if you're a completionist
But if collecting stuff makes your dopamine receptors go brrrrrrrrrrr it's a dream come true.

DKC to DK64 should've been the first sign that 3D wasn't always superior to 2D.

>>740390282
It was most likely the mini games due to a lack of skill, citing controls and camera already alludes to this because there's nothing wrong with those and they lend toward the same end. Citing gameplay cinches it really, you were filtered by the game entirely and at this point you're just seeking validation, and you wont get it from me.
>>
>>740395904
It came bundled with a RAM expansion to handle those vertex lighting shaders. It definitely had great lighting, great atmosphere.
>>
>>740397445
Yeah some really great atmosphere for a game about dumb monkeys
>>
>>740397445
No it had and still does have a memory leak. I don't know about Switch but if you played it on Wii U and never closed it every now and then the game will eventually crash. Mine did by the time I got to crystal caves on Wii U.

>goemon's great adventure
>blast corps
>chameleon twist
>sin and punishment
>custom robo
>diddy kong racing
>snowboard kids 1,2
>harvest moon
>fighting force
I left out obv popular picks but these are genuinely good games worth checking out.
>>
>>740397517
The developers have disclosed there's no memory leak, it was fixed before they released the game.
>>
>>740398354
Yeah a few are good. But it's not like ps1 where I could sit all day naming games worth getting a ps1 for. N64's worthwhile titles you could blow through in half a week
>>
>>740397445
>It came bundled with a RAM expansion to handle those vertex lighting shaders

Yeah i'm aware. I played it way back then but never got back into it because i vaguely remember that emulation couldn't handle it very well. I just think it's very underappreciated in what regards to the technical aspect. Banjo tooie came a couple years later and while it looks great and solid, it has nothing on this game's lightning.

It's definitely the peak of the N64, and it never gets the same appraisal that Ocarina of Time unrightfully obtains.
>>
>>740399407
based as he*k!
>>
>>740389654
It's funny how sauceless it is compared to even Banjo. All the incidental characters like the llama and the beetle in level 2 are so fucking shitty.
>>
Having to go back to the barrels to swap characters is such a bad design decision it genuine ruins the entire experience. The warp pads feel like a last minute attempt to fix the game when they realized it was fucking boring to move around these large maps to swap characters and collect every little object crammed into this cart.
>>
>>740400558
It's actually a great design decision because it informs the entire way you are supposed to approach the game. DK64 wasn't designed for the retards of the modern era at all, the ones that brute force square pegs into round holes.
