The game is centered around watching your Miis interact, but you can plow through most of the dialogue in a few days of play. The 3DS version has the same issue, but that game drip feeds content way more slowly so it doesn't feel as 'barren,' and a few things still got neutered like marriages and babies. The 3DS game's content doesn't really excuse a home console sequel either. The game's dialogue is composed entirely of text to speech so what excuse do they have to only have a handful of variations of shit like introductions? On top of that, the game just becomes tedious once you start getting more than 30 miis, which the game expects you to since island upgrades are locked behind the number of miis. Why the fuck can't I skip the eating animations or miis getting unstuck? That shit just becomes obnoxious busy work. I'm tired of Nintendo's obsession with making half assed sandboxes.

Overreliance on user-generated content without meat to back it up, combined with the lack of sharing was the 1-2 punch that killed its Western-side longevity. The game expects you to make everything, which isn't a problem in its own right, but it's the only way for you to do a lot of things, since the game lacks a lot of preset options (zero prebuilt house variations so you are forced into making jpeg crusted houses, many outfit cuts between Life 3DS to LtD meaning you have to facepaint or custom outfit the rest, many interactable object cuts) so you're forced into doing everything manually. It takes a lot out of the pick-up-and-play nature the past two entries had, doubly so with the lack of sharing said user-generated content. Miitopia had a very healthy creator->downloader community where creators would make the characters they liked, while others can download them to instantly get started on the actual game element. This time around, everything's forced onto you, with no real ways to make it manageable. Someone good at character creating might not be as into island design and vice versa, but it's impossible for those creators to collaborate with each other.The cut content standalone isn't much of an issue, but combined, the losses are felt. In particular, the lack of base customization features is baffling, as official Nintendo guides and articles showcase things like making use of the facepaint feature to make custom cat ears and headgear that were already in the previous game, or using the custom object build to make outdoor bicycles and the likes. Why not just have them in the game if they're acknowledged like that?The dialogue also feels lacking, and while repeating dialogue was also an issue in the past games, the lingo system means a lot of the new lines have to be genericized to fit the madlibs mold.I still like the game in spite of this, but I feel the overreliance on UGC is its biggest flaw.

I miss the intimacy married couples used to have in the 3DS version. Bathing together, sleeping together, brushing their teeth and looking after their kids, that sort of thing.
