Anyone who argues for less characters fundamentally doesn't understand what makes smash brothers such a beloved game franchise. The whole franchise is a lover letter to the history of Nintendo and all of it's franchises. The moment you start cutting characters it start stomping on that. Some small cuts here and there are fine (3rd parties or niche characters like Pichu or Dr mario) however a full blown wipe deleting 50% of the roster would be devastating.

Smash Ultimate is basically perfect as it is. Just rebalance/update some characters, add new characters, add a new story mode, add some cool new gimmick mini-games (break the targets, platforms, etc), add more items and stages. Hell maybe add a more dedicated "team" fight mechanic. There is so much that can be done without deleting characters.

Focusing on the sweaty ass competitive fags is the easiest way to kill this franchise.

Honestly there is pretty much no way they keep all or even most of the third parties and anyone thinking they will are just delusional. There is a reason that every game that does cross over stuff does it as DLC and not in the base game. Companies prefer licensing their characters when they might get a cut of the revenue as opposed to a one time fee. It also takes time since you've gotta get shit approved by the rights holder. Now imagine doing that for the now 15 series Smash added that are not from Nintendo. You also can't get a lot of work done until an approval is done since if they say no, there goes all your hard work. They even had to delay Brawl just to get Sonic in.

Then there is the issue with Stages. The only reason Ultimate could work is they just reused the stages so they didn't have to make new ones for series other than Splatoon and Castlevania. Now imagine trying to do that for the 15 third party series on top of the 20+ Nintendo ones. Its just more work, not to mention they all need new music too, and possibly assist trophies.

There is a reason Fortnite doesn't keep the licensed costumes forever, or what Umamusume is so wonky with adding new Horse Girls (the only reason they could pull off adding Forever Young was his owner is also the President of Cyber Agent). Smash fans are spoiled by Ultimate and will be shocked to realize it can't be replicated. The licenses for the characters have probably already run out by this point.

Fire Emblem characters happen because the Japs love them (they liked Byleth), but he does absolutely throw Nintendo under the bus to avoid accountability. He said Nintendo picked the DLC but Atlus has said Sakurai, not Nintendo, asked for Joker.

If anything, the reason they probably don't want him working on Smash is his fee. Sakurai has said before that he takes a cut of the game's sales rather than a salary so that he's invested in the game's commercial success. That becomes a big problem when Ultimate went on to sell 30 million copies, so they were probably paying him way more than they ever though (and that was all done when Iwata was still alive too). They would probably rather have it made by a company they work with rather than have it be controlled by Sakurai and they can do it cheaper anyway.

A lot of the third parties are probably easier to get than you'd think. They are a bigger pain in the ass compared to first parties for sure, but it's probably not that bad when you are talking big money and the insane advertising Smash offers. I can't imagine these companies going "no, we don't want to have a characters featured in the biggest Nintendo game".

It's one of those cases where it's a win-win for both companies. Smash isn't the niche game it was back in the gamecube era. It's now a headliner on par with a mainline Mario or Zelda.

This idea never really makes sense when you consider, even for older characters, they have pretty much all the moves they need. Like, think about Samus. If you were to design her now, what would you include? You'd probably have missiles, the charge shot, the morph ball in some ways because those are all iconic to every Metroid game. Of, and for recovery, well you have the Space Jump, the Screw Attacks aaaaand you pretty much recreated her Smash moveset. Same for Link. You are going to have the sword and the various sword moves he has. You will have bombs and bows because that's in every game. Then add one more equipment and you are pretty close to Link's Smash moveset. This is true of a fuck ton of the characters. There are some edge cases like Kirby who has a lot more moveset potential or Luigi with the Poltergust, but other than those, you are going pretty close to the Smash moveset. Truth is the original 12 only need a touch up. There is no reason to re-work most of the case when their movesets are mostly fine. And there is nothing wrong with more basic characters when Smash has added some wacky ones. Like it wouldn't been bad to update their moves up Smash for Wii U/3DS did this with a lot of characters and didn't need to do a full reboot.

I doubt a new Smash is being announced tomorrow, though I guess it's been long enough since Ult that it's not impossible. Either way, unless Sakurai is willing to do something different with Smash, I wouldn't mind someone else directing it. I just want momentum carrying back into jumps again.

Lucario, Pit, Ike, Lucas, Rosalina, Villager, Little Mac, Greninja. Even Inkling is arguably outdated in the game she fucking debuted in. These characters basically fall into three categories:

>characters who are propped up by outdated forms of privilege, typically disjoints (Pit, Ike, Palutena, Corrin)

Note that "gimmick-y" doesn't mean that they have some sort of bespoke gimmick, like Lucario's aura. Ike is gimmick-y because he's a heavy sword character, which is to this day a novel combination of archetypes. Lucas is gimmick-y because he's basically carried by his zair tether grab and his specials, with the former being more relevant in competitive and the latter in casual.

Pit is kind of the poster child for a character who's been power-crept to oblivion, though. What does he really have? Okay, he's a disjoint character with multi-hits and multiple jumps. Multi-hits aren't really relevant in a game without crouch canceling, and if anything they're a liability because your opponent often falls out of them. He has a reflector that's outclassed by half a dozen other reflectors and counters, including ones that were designed before his and redesigned in later games, like Game & Watch's. And he... can sacrifice control of himself to aim his arrows, which basically do fucking nothing and are outclassed in Ultimate by simply edgeguarding, because Ultimate recoveries are so strong. Just compare his kit to any 4 or Ultimate DLC character's and it becomes clear that the poor guy is just woefully outclassed purely because he's behind the times. He's still playing Smash while everyone else is playing a different game entirely.

Ultimate is by far the most complex fighting game, strategy-wise if you want to be on top. The ledge AND offstage edgeguarding are two separate skills you have master and decide your gameplay around. ROB and Snake players just fly back to the stage. I can't tell how serious or are or aren't being. Body-blocking is shit-tier for depth. It reduces depth and introduces jank. Do you know how many grabs just whiff on Bowser because of body blocking? Do you get that Ultimate is still more difficult to corner a character than Melee despite that? It just reduces proper upclose approaching options, making the game more defensive. Smash is one of those games that gets people to buy the console. It would be good especially with the price increases which fucked them in Japan.

Besides the fact half the tryhard autists would cheer Steve being cut, the major characters to be worried about are from Square. Sakurai is on record during the development of Ultimate saying that SE was by far the most difficult in terms of bringing everyone back for the base roster, they wanted to sell Cloud as DLC again. This is especially shitty since Nintendo would eat 100% of the PR hit for doing something so scummy.
