This is Fujin from Final Fantasy VIII. She speaks in isolated kanji characters. English localizers translated this into all-caps, single-word statements, making her seem like she is constantly shouting.
>>
>>740642916
So they made an autist autistic?
>>
>>740642969
Pretty much. It is like translating chigyu as chud, it is the same insult. Language is a mere representation of the Will.
>>
>>740642916
She did shout plenty in the game though. She even stomps her foot and everyone around jumps as if she's doing something loudly.
>>
>>740642969
Yeah, but in a shrieking madwoman way instead of a military efficiency way.
>>

Making into single words and achieves the same effect. All caps maybe less of a great choice, but with so much shit localization out there this is an odd thing to concern yourself with.

there's no exclamation point so it doesn't seem like she's shouting. It's a bit closer to how NORG-SPEAKS-LIKE-THIS.

I played this goddamn game or at least the RPGmaker recreation of it, and Shotgun is even less important than the entirety of Crisis Core. That is to say, less than nothing. Negative experience. If I can get the keitai game to work I'll try it but it probably won't be much different.

The localization for FF8 is really ass, specially because the game is filled with callbacks and puns that the localization just doesn't catch, and in case of some characters like hers, Odine, and Ultimecia they just decided to rewrite their entire dialogue lines.

i think i do remember hearing cissnei was the canon version of the player character, though im.not sure

in its place it makes its own callbacks like whatever.

you people have never tried to translate and see jus how different japanese and english are.

Im a professional working translator and currently am in the process of translating a few books.

Im not in favor of extreme rewrites like the worst examples out there, but youre completely delusional if you think Japanese can be translated 1 to 1.
>>
>>740648937
Doing Whatever several times isn't a clever callback, it is more like a catchphrase.
>>
>>740649293
You must not be a very good one if you think the differences in syntax justify the kind of blatant rewrites we see in FFVIII.

Making sensible changes that conveys the intent and underlying meaning, emotions, nuance, cadence while still being presented in natural sounding English is harder than it seems and these FF games are one of the few localizations that manage to do it well.

The one of you being anal about it being a callback or a catchphrase are not understanding that its the underlying concept of an ongoing thing that develops meaning. Whatever in particular reaches its conclusion when Rinoa says it at the same time as Squall which serves as an effective emotional connection and character moment.

Look up comparisons from the Ace Attorney Investigations 2 fan translation and official translation.

You can scream angrily into the void and tell yourself you know what youre talking about as much as you want, but you dont. Im sorry.

This is another place where the localizers fucked up. Nida uses a phrase that revolves around the verb "動かす" (ugokasu), which translates to "moving" something.

In Japanese, ugokasu carries an inherent double meaning. Metaphorically, it means to manage, direct, or run an organization (acting as the driving force or the boss). Literally, it means to physically operate or pilot a machine. Nida is proudly stating that he will become the man who "moves" the Garden. In his mind, he is declaring his ambition to eventually replace Cid as Headmaster, but the script is winking at the player because he is destined to literally pilot the building once it is able to take flight in the second Disc 2.

The official English localization instead went with:
>"(I'll be the ruler of this Garden someday!)"
To localize this in a way that feels completely natural to an English speaker while perfectly preserving the writer's intent, i'd go with something like:

>"(I'll be at the helm of this Garden someday!)"
>"(I'm going to be the one steering this Garden someday!)"
>"(I'll be the one running this Garden someday!)"
I personally like the first one best, since "At the helm" is a widely used English idiom for being the leader or director of an institution. However, it is fundamentally a nautical term for standing at the steering wheel of a ship.

This is a constant with FF8 localization work.

>>
>>740654225
It's mostly a lot of name changes for no reason.
Sharp Spike -> Nine Inch Nail (described as being "the claw of an industrial monster")
Diablos -> Nosferatu
Quetzacoatl ->Golgotha
Crescent Wish -> Islam Star
Ulysses -> W.W. West
Phoenix Down -> MT-Psy
And a ton of others, like Quistis' second whip that was renamed "Totally S.M." and the description was changed to something like "The more you use it, the more pleasurable it gets". Also they changed the magic levels system to, for example, Fire Fire+ FireX instead of Fire Fira Firaga, and that stayed in french translations of later square games. They also randomly changed certain minor lines, impacting certain plot points, for example Ward being mute isn't due to an injury anymore, he just breaks the 4th wall in one of the Laguna sequences and says "If that's how it is, i'll say nothing else for the rest of the game!".

Ok, so, i actually got the Ward part slightly wrong. The dialogue when they're about to jump off the cliff goes something like this:
>L: My grandma used to say: "It's when you speak of something bad that it happens."
>W: In that case...
>L: In that case... what?
>K: I think i got it...
>W: I will not say a single word for the rest of the game.
>L: What are you talking about?
>W: Not a single word, until the end! I dont want something bad to happen to me, no way...
>L: Ward, it's just an old saying my grandma used to say! I
>L: know what'll get you talking! If i say you're FAT, you still have nothing to say?
>W: NOTHING!!!
>L: Nothing?
>L: Well...
And then Laguna spots a boat and they jump off into the water.

Her speech is closer to say Dracula from Symphony of the Night than your typical man which is to say it's more regal than rough masculine. Secondly, men and women talk differently in English. Most of the time when people say they want a "direct translation", they don't mean a literal 1-to-1. They just mean preserving the exact meaning of what was originally said. Obviously because of grammar, sentence structure, dialect, and language peculiarities, a lot of the time you can't do 1-to-1, but as close as possible.
IE: if the original text means something akin to "the highest authority in the kingdom", they expect the translation to be close to that. If the speaker's being facetious, something like "The high muckadimuck around here" or something might be appropriate as well.
What most of them are saying they don't fucking want, is for that to become shit like "the head of the patriarchy that rules this country and oppresses all women" out of nowhere. Anons, Deepl and Google are making shit up to make the JP version acceptable. The literal translation of these lines is:
>This is the world of snow, White Snow village, Enjoy the beautiful glittering world.
This is obviously total nonsense in English, so the AI has to localize it to make it sound like normal English. That's the point.
>>
>>740664786
You're responding to an example of a "direct translation" that isn't direct. No one understands what a direct translation is. It's a buzzword. 1 side uses it to mean accurate translation, the other uses it as a catch-all for anything they don't like. Any discussion around direct vs 1-to-1 vs whatever is meaningless.

>make the JP version acceptable
No I just copy pasted wrong and gave the MTL
>ここは雪の世界、ホワイトスノー
instead of
>ホワイトスノー村
Google didn't realize ホワイトスノー was a name, and deepL didn't clarify it was the name of a village. Which is my fault.
>This is a world of snow—White Snow Village!
Is what first sentence becomes when pasted correctly. Also half of the "literal" translation issues just comes from insisting "ここは" has to be "this". Pretty sure it's supposed to be "here" here.
"Here in this world of snow is White Snow village" and "here" is a "literal" translation of "ここ"...The entire discussion over what is "direct" is pointless. What's more direct between "here" and "this place" for "ここ"? What about the ”は”. What about "よ". DeepL put and "!" is that the literal for "よ"? It's a bad faith point, That's why it has to be couched in the initial assumption that Japanese is a "dry language". Which makes no sense intuitively and even less sense if you know anything about other languages.

What the localization did to Ultimecia pissed me off.

They wrote her lines, and didn't even include anything clever.
In the original she is shown to be resentful, to be purposely playing an act of the evil sorceress, to be theatrical referencing dancing and so on (which is why in the FMV the crowd starts to dance like Michael Jackson), to reference dreams and delusions giving her this dreamy quality like an entity from a dream or another time, and so on. Then in the final fight she stops talking like that and starts talking like a robot mentioning things like algorithim, compression, and so on.

All of this is ignored by the localization team.

So has anyone done a kind of de- or re-localization that fixes all of these issues, and tells the real story of FF8 in English?
>>
>>740689290
You're trying to say old translators were better, when really it's the same localizer slop. Same rewrites, same censorship, same basic Japanese comprehension errors. The localizer clique is legitimately brain damaged. They're too inept to do their jobs so when they encounter something they don't understand they fuck it up. And when they fuck up they have two excuses
>It's a localization not a translation
>That's the literal, japanese is just dry
At some point the former excuse is going to become untenable(it already is but they pretend it's not), so they're going to switch to the latter, claiming it's a return to form while doing the exact same shit.
>>
>>740692049
What's worse is that in Japanese there is a part where she says "Ultimate Fantasy", which is almost a title drop, and it is so cool, but the localization did nothing with it.
>>
>>740692642
In order for that to happen the Japanese->English scene for media would need a factory reset. The culture of overwriting someone else's work is so deeply ingrained it affects professional and hobby translations.

I'm a hardcore fan with FF8, so many times I would even try to escape reality with lucid dreaming, I would be in Balamb Garden where I would often train with Zell in the training center and help Selphie with the Garden Festival, but one day as I was talking to Selphie, we went to my dormitory for a private talk. She immediately said, "You know you could live with us forever.." I gave her a confused look and she continued, "We understand that you live on earth and you REALLY wish to live here". I then said "How..How did you know?" She then giggled and said "Because we've been watching you, silly!"

This was a dream come true and I almost cried right there. She then said, "I talked with Headmaster Cid and he agreed that you would be PERFECT for SeeD, you just have to do...one thing". She then held my hand and looked deep into my eyes and said "...You have to kill yourself for the transfer to work correctly." I then gave her some questions, "How long do I have before the deal expires?" She then said "Cid said 3 months.." I added by saying "What's the most painless way?..." She giggled again, "Suicide will require pain buuut...if you want it quick...Get a gun and a nice shot to the head works.

I then agreed and she gave me a kiss on the forehead, "I know this will be tough but once it's over and done, you'll get to live here!" I then woke up and this was last week and i purchased a gun. I might actually kill myself because that dream just felt too real to be fake and my life isn't doing so grand.

That's funny, I know of English localizations obscuring references to Islam in Final Fantasy VI (changed an esper from "Jihad" to "Crusader" (SNES) and then Doomsday in both Japanese and English (Pixel Remaster) ) and the Doomsday spell in Final Fantasy IX changed from "Jihad" to "Doomsday" in English, but this is like the first time I hear of a translation ADDING that

Heard the French FFIX changed "Zidane" to something like "Djidane" to avoid sounding like the footballer name which is a choice for sure considering FFVIII

I always heard that their French translations improved massively after FFVII French (apparently so bad and by Sony that the localization team used pseudonyms) but VIII doesn't sound like much of an improvement

It is, compared to VII.
Also, they added another reference to islamic/arab culture: they changed Righty's name to Fatima, referencing the Hand of Fatima thing in Moroccan culture. Since we're talking about the Girlriends name changes:

Pandemona. Its Japanese Name is Pandemonium (パンデモニウム, Pandemoniumu). The capital of Hell in John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost.
Diablos. Its Japanese Name is Diabolos (ディアボロス, Diaborosu). The Greek word for "Devil" or "Slanderer."
The Brothers (Minotaur & Sacred). The Big Brother in Japanese is called Minotauros. The Little Brother in Japanese, his name is Seku (セク), a shortened reference to Sekhmet.
Cactuar. Its Japanese Name is Sabotender (サボテンダー, Sabotendā). A Japanese pun combining saboten (cactus) and the English word "pretender." However, this change was actually a franchise standard rather than an FF8-specific one

Lot of the changes are due to character limit and references to demonology.

>I'm beginning to think localizers and localizer apologists are just anti-Japanese, and that's what motivates them to erase all cultural and language quirks.

Close. Its because in general there was little oversight from the japanese side (language barrier) so localisation was defacto just another platform for political activism and it had no standards meaning anyone who could pretend to know japanese could do. It went on like this for decades.

However machine translation is now good enough that the language barriers are dropping, meaning there is increasing oversight and growing awareness from the japanese side that a lot of eigo translators are literally larping faggot commie retard trannies that unironically just rewrite text.
Furthermore since people are becoming more aware of just how scumfucky localisers are, reliance on machine translation is also growing, because people would rather have a slightly less accurate translation then the fanfiction of some deranged fat fuck with dyed hair.

Localisation in general is just a mind boggling concept that degrades everything it touches.

-It assumes the target audience is so insular, retarded and ignorant that foreign concepts are completely and permanently incomprehensible forever. (Basically, the customer is a retard).
-It devalues the producer side and forces more cost on them to hire localisation teams (thanks to an incestuous HR level connection between overseas distributors and whatnot whom have absolutely no stake in either the success of the product, the satisfaction of the customer or the artistic value of anything in question).
-It degrades said artistic value of the product and also robs the customer of appreciating the original form of whatever is in question, or the intent behind it, because they never actually get to experience it. Only an approximation of it, in the opinion of someone very opinionated, whom has already been paid and has no stake in quality.

>-It assumes the target audience is so insular, retarded and ignorant that foreign concepts are completely and permanently incomprehensible forever. (Basically, the customer is a retard).
This is a point that doesn't get made often enough. This attitude is the crux of the issue, combined with the arrogance that leads them to think that they know better than both customer and creator.
>-It degrades said artistic value of the product and also robs the customer of appreciating the original form of whatever is in question, or the intent behind it, because they never actually get to experience it. Only an approximation of it, in the opinion of someone very opinionated, whom has already been paid and has no stake in quality.
I was saying this about remakes earlier, but we don't need extra layers of "interpretation" between us and a work. That just muddies everything and is almost universally shit. Something is meant to be interpreted directly by the audience, and translation needs to facilitate that interaction, not seek to shape it.
>However machine translation is now good enough that the language barriers are dropping, meaning there is increasing oversight and growing awareness from the japanese side that a lot of eigo translators are literally larping faggot commie retard trannies that unironically just rewrite text.
The fallout from this can't come quickly enough.
I don't have anything else to add, but good post.

FF8's themes work better with a sole heroine, despite the execution not always hitting the mark, but Quistis and Selphie should have gotten more than they got.
The biggest mistake was keeping quite a few character scenes they did have dependent on overall meaningless choices. It's nice to see different characters react to different circumstances depending on your choice but missing something like >>740690284 when Quistis' development is already so thin isn't great.
In an alternative take on FF8's world it might have been cool to be doing SeeD missions and having the related things like political/global intrigue, Gardens and Squall's rising through the ranks be the focus.
Choosing what kind of teams you build, how you take on missions and who you take where would be better to express choose-your-own-heroine, as opposed to fighting fate and the big bad type of story.

That's pretty much the tragedy of her character. We don't even know if the future she did anything wrong before she was hunted by SeeD as she was foretold to destroy the future and compress time and that would mean that SeeD (and the general population) would view sorceresses with great fear and hatred. She is one of the best written villains of the series - she has the humane motives for doing what she does - and falls right back into Final Fantasy VIII's theme of how war warps up and twists innocent souls into killing machines for the purpose of survival.

Yeah, character motivations were very much driven by traumas, a common trope from 90s japanese vydia. I know people like to compare Evangelion to Xenogears, but I always felt that Final Fantasy VIII connects better to it when it comes to themes of children orphaned by war being molded into soldiers to enact the same violence that brought them to that state irregardless of their awareness or will much better.

>We don't even know if the future she did anything wrong
It'd have to be implication of the world in her time not looking all that great that she must have subjugated/destroyed everything. With how obsessed she is with keeping herself safe that she would warp the universe it's hard to suggest she's just been holed up in her ethically constructed castle and not harming anyone in her time. It'd be interesting to know how they might have detailed that part of her if they'd been able to flesh everything out some more.

Evangelion is about a secret cabal of jews using alien corpses to turn people into goo. It has nothing to do with war, soldiers, human violence or any of that. The military fights kaiju, it doesn't commit atrocities against civilians. The children are traumatized by their parents, not by "war".

Yes, we know she ended up subjugating and destroying the future using her powers but it's never clear if this was done before SeeD hunted and persecuted her and the japanese translation from her speech as Edea highly suggests that the disdain and hatred displayed by others because of the fantasy she represented in their minds might have pushed her to embrace and play the role of Ultimecia, perhaps even renaming herself after the tales of the events that would come to pass written by the SeeDs from the past that had defeated her many years before. Ultimania had one last Selphie diary public entry that confirms that Ultimecia was public knowledge by the end of the game.

If she was able to subjugate the world in the future, then that means either SeeD did not exist anymore, or they were not powerful enough to stop her from conquering. If so, where did any prediction/prophecy of SeeD defeating her even come from, and why would she believe it? Further, if there were no SeeD around in her present that could defeat her, by what reason would she believe one would come from the past to kill her instead of be born in the future after she has conquered? And if she already knew that one would come from the past, why would she then willingly open the doorway for them to come through straight to her to do it?

The protagonists are nothing but tools to fight a war about Angels. Sure, the trauma steems from the abuse and neglect from their parents but the series hints several times that had humanity not being fighting Angels at the brink of extinction, those children (and those close to them) would have grown differently. They are a byproduct of all this violence and war that humanity has to endure if it wants to live.

There is no "war" with Angels, any more than there is a "war" with Godzilla. War is a Human vs Human conflict and the trauma comes from Humans inflicting horrors upon their fellow man, not from alien or incidental natural catastrophes.

The entire monster / robot story is just set dressing and is not the cause of any of the actual problems with the characters, all of their issues stem directly from each other and would exist regardless of any monster attacks or end of the world shenanigans. That's the whole point. People cause their own problems and problems for each other, then blame it on the world around them.

The dreaded Sorceress, clad in terrifying garb, who curses the innocent to death in cruel rituals. The wicked Sorceress, who burns green fields to ash and freezes warm homes to ice with merciless magic. ...How absurd."
>(...)
>Edea: "And now that the terrifying Sorceress of your illusions has become Galbadia's ally, do you breathe a sigh of relief? Who is the one lost in a dream, layering delusion upon delusion?"
>President Deling: "E-Edea... what on earth... Ede—!"
>Edea: "Reality is not kind. Reality is not kind at all. And so, you fools! You leave yourselves but one choice. Flee into your own delusions! I shall dance for you within that world of illusion! I shall dance for all eternity as the So, the harbinger of terror! You and I. Together, we shall create the ultimate fantasy. Within it, both life and death are but a sweet dream. Forever live the Sorceress and the illusion! Forever live Galbadia, servant to the Sorceress!"
>Edea: It seems a Sorceress is in need of a sacrifice, and a cruel ritual."

I fucking love this speech.

She has no reason not believe it. Remember that Ultimecia cannot compress time on her own, she needs Ellone and Ellone does not exist in her future time. All she knows is that she is fated to be defeated by a SeeD (she acknowledges that much when she sets her eyes on Squall the second time they meet) and as long as Ellone exists "somwhere", just as Ultimecia can travel to the past, she has no way of knowing they cannot travel to the future. As for how the general population, SeeD and Ultimecia would know about all that.. well Selphie seals the deal when she writes that public entry in her diary (the one we can access in-game at Balamb computers) and ironically she questions if perhaps the reason why Ultimecia wasn't trying to compress time wasn't just to survive (which without that piece of information that gets passed down to the future, Ultimecia would have never known she was at risk - since like you said, she was powerful enough to dominate her future).

Literal translation, or one closer to the original:

I see what you meant. In my mind it would seem weird that SeeD would be so hung up that they'd hunt Ultimecia like that if she had not yet done anything. A lot can change in some several hundred or thousand years but if the idea was that SeeD would be so aggressive then it just seems extra strange that Squall could just up and decide to free Rinoa without it being shown that someone of either Cid/Edea or Garden had serious problems with that. Just because it isn't shown doesn't mean that isn't the case of course, but overall we're shown that while SeeD are taught to handle things properly they're also expected to think independently and fairly, to where saving the dog in Dollet is a mission bonus. It'd be against their foundation to simply persecute an innocent, even if a sorceress, just as much as it would be not dealing with a bad one.
But it is hard to say with a SeeD that has gone to such a long amount of time.

Are you fucking kidding me? Gendo only becomes neglectful and manipulative of Shinji because Yui had to sacrifice herself to ensure Shinji would have a world to live in. IIRC he (or was it Fuyutsuki?) acknowledges latter in the series that all would have different if Yui was still alive.

That has nothing to do with a monster attack. If Yui died protecting Shinji from being hit by a car, it would be the same result. The problem being Gendo is a selfish piece of shit in any situation or reality. HE is the problem, not his circumstances. He caused the problems for Shinji, who in turn caused his own problems with others. Aliens and monsters and "war" are not needed for anything but to greenlight the show to sell toys.

Children piloting a warmachine that you can feel as if it is your own flesh, shooting guns at incomprehensible monsters while every second they waste risks said monster getting them maimed or killed, their fellow kid soldiers getting killed, actual people such as regular soldiers getting killed or their city full of people blown up is far beyond any threshold to say that, while Evangelion is about a lot of things, the effects of war and battle forced on children is one of them.
>>
>>740714949
Dude millions of people lose their loved ones to war. They don't generally abuse and neglect their surviving kids as a response, or try to destroy the entire Human race about it. That's a Gendo issue.
>>
>>740714792
Yeah, we don't know what happened between the present and future timeline but remember that it's not the first time humans and sorceresses have been at war against one another. One of the tutorial terminals hints at sorceresses concealing their powers because they fear repercussions of being known by the general population (hence the whole knight thing). I imagine distrust and apprehension would greatly increase if tales emerged that a sorceress in the future engulfed the world in chaos, destruction and nearly made the universe disappear, and people had no way of knowing when exactly that would happen. That level of dread and impending doom would probably make people do nasty things.
>>
>>740715510
There is more. There is a moment in the game in the Japanese where Ultimecia calls Seifer a "poor boy" and also a moment where Rinoa calls Seifer "poor Seifer".
>>
>>740712387
>it's never clear if this was done before SeeD hunted and persecuted her
It can't have been before. SeeD was around first. Because of the time travel shenanigans, the organization was founded from the beginning specifically to kill Ultimecia. She had to learn pretty much straight from the cradle that this mercenary group had been building for ages just to get her and she was basically born to fight a war against them without even knowing fucking why. Squall was the real villain of the story, when you think about it, because he gave the idea to found SeeD to Edea.
>>
>>740715495
>>740715964
But it is a consequence of war, is it not? War as theme just explores the darker corners of human psyche and actions, you can replace these stories with more mundane ones driven by other forms of personal trauma to get the same point across but it's more staggering to use war and its destructive and violent consequents because it reaches out everyone with the same degree of intensity albeit each individual will be absorb that trauma differently. Evangelion's world is tailored for this and the anime hammers that point on the audience's head several times - it all steems from humanity desperately clinging to survival. Sure, some characters are assholes, but had circumstances been different, wouldn't things be better, happier, more normal?
>>
>>740716624
>That level of dread and impending doom would probably make people do nasty things.
That does make it an important point whether the events concerning Ultimecia are common knowledge that you raised, and is certainly something to consider. But while SeeD are also only human I'd still make the distinction between them and the general populace.
All of the things you mentioned could have reached another boiling point in the general population in Ultimecia's time but if SeeD as an institution existed even somewhat as they do now I'd half expect them to try and protect Ultimecia from the mob by dropping her on a white ship rather than being on the side hunting her without asking questions.
To me it would have to be that SeeD and their mission on paper even existing at a conceptual level is what triggers Ultimecia's disdain for them, rather than anything they actually did. Even them doing nothing while she was in fact persecuted by others, would still be a valid mark against them in that sense.
Galbadia Garden being coopted is another example to say that anything is possible really but then that just opens up the question of defining what it means for someone or something to be SeeD and whether Ultimecia actually really cared about making the distinction.
>>
>>740645395
nothing outside of the original game matters or counts.
>>
>>740717140
>Squall was the real villain of the story, when you think about it, because he gave the idea to found SeeD to Edea.
Yup, pretty much this. But you can't even blame him because Squall too, is a victim of war waged between humans and sorceresses. If Laguna had not been not been in Esthar fighting Adel to free humanity from her tyranny, Squall would have not been orphaned and abandoned and he would have had a normal uprising like most kids, instead of becoming a cold-blooded mercenary that follows orders and is incapable of understanding his foe. Maybe that "other" Squall would have been truly capable of changing history.
>>
>>740714792
The key idea is that it is known in her time that Ultimecia is the last living sorceress, so she would likely be hunted even if she personally didn't do anything wrong just to finally rid the world of them. Living in fear, she finds a way to travel to the past via junction magic and in doing so she concocts a plan to compress all time into one spot.

That is kind of the whole theme - it doesn't matter if she is actually evil or not, fate has decided that she gets hunted and thus will fight to protect herself. Fate and how you can't escape it is the entire point of the game.
>>

>>740718746
That's a good point you bring up, it is possible that SeeD (or factions within SeeD) did acknowledge and know that protecting Ultimecia was more important that hunting her down and it's not clear which part started the aggression. Her speech in Deling City also portrays a lot loathe towards the general population, it could that she was just the target of hate and violence and before SeeD could have done anything, they were forced to take action and attempt to stop her. It's never clear how events are set in motion in Ultimecia's story but her dialogue suggests she was very alone in her pursuit for survival, often finding companionship in objects given life.

Well, that was the point being made by anon, that technically we don't know who shot first, and while it doesn't necessarily matter for the themes the game is portraying, as you put well, it's interesting to think about how the particulars would have went down and why.
Though Ultimecia's lack of obvious development in being the big bad is also a common sentiment and if you leave the possibility of a remake on the table, thinking about this also plays into what kind of things we'd want to see or not see about her.

Because Shumi's evolutions are informed by their personality the idea is that he shows on the outside the greedy fat fuck that he is on the inside.
Though the extent of his greed when it comes to Garden's finances is somewhat debatable, him being willing to just serve up Squall and friends to Galbadia no questions asked in order to curry their favor does show how little he cares for anything this isn't his own business and himself.
