Now that gamers have given up on wokeslop and gone back to old games, is it time for the games industry to stop making new games and just remaster/patch old ones?
>>
I haven't watched this video, but people don't play old games. They play botched Remakes and Remasters that don't resemble the original at all or live service games like League of Legends that "technically" came out almost 2 decades ago but are continually changed.

If it results in the new games becoming like the old games again then yes. But i have no commentary to make on Blizzard since i only played Warcraft 3 back in the day. Missed WoW boat because my folks were strict on money and anti anything subscription based in my allowance.
I seriously only play old games and it pisses me off since why am i buying new hardware when there's nothing i want to play? we'll never get anything good from late 90s and early 00s ever again.

I played DeS this year for the first time. You're missing the point entirely by thinking in extremes. Nobody is saying, "gamers don't play new games anymore. Sales are 0." They're saying people are playing less new games and instead opting for things in the past they either missed or weren't around for. It's actually having a massive effect on the games industry as a whole. The only AAA games I have played in the past 8 years have been Cyberpunk and Elden Ring. I've instead gone back to emulate old games, try more ROM hacks, or opt for indies instead. This is no longer a niche mindset or behavior. It has become a lot more normal, even among young zoomies and genA.

Quality nosediving isn't the only thing pushing this trend. It is being compounded from multiple sources like games rising in price, games being less optimized, games being bloated in install size, haggification of women (I still genuinely cannot grasp why this trend is continuing, especially when the men are still jacked and nice looking), and even art styles becoming homogenized and non-existent. I think most people generally play new releases, but once someone starts emulating or trying old games and have an incredibly memorable experience, they tend to go deeper, which results in them buying even less new games as there are only so many hours in a year to spend gaming. The fact that not a single new MMO has been able to dethrone WoW or OSRS should be telling. Everyone forgot about that Amazon slop MMO within a month or two and even then not many people saw it as appealing in the first place. This isn't an exception. It's a growing trend.

NTA I will say this generally true but there is some nuance here. I will say this is due to AAA having 3 issues.

1. Making games for an audience but taking 5-7 years to where the Gameplay, Writing, Stories characters are outdated, perfect example is Sony games with Concord trying to promote a Hero Shooter almost 7 years after the market dried up or even GOW Sequel being 6 years behind of the cube joke.
2. The hilarious trend chasing for Graphics at all costs and thinking if they make games look very beautiful at the expense of gameplay being flat, somehow people will pay for it. When reality this was a flash in the pan for popularity with general audiences especially during COVID but the time is over and the audience left.
3. All games are 100 hours long and heavily padded in difficulty or chasing trends with what is popular currently, than crafting anything new.

This has lead to the result of games not being memorable, being stale, and nobody talking about them and everyone just going back to older games which focused on Art Direction, Game Design, and even Gameplay as a whole. Graphics are not everything in fact realism ages quickly as Ken Levine noted vs stylistic games. If games focused on 8-14 hour experiences, with high replay value after beating the game for extras, unlockables, etc suddenly the market will become better for it. Because even back then everyone knew nobody wished to play games for hugely long periods of time, everyone wishes to beat games quickly and be done with it or play more if they wanted more.

I will also mention while Indies are doing well, they also mostly have the same issues of staying within a fixed 5 genres or trying to combine genres that make zero sense like Rogue-Deck-Action game or Rogue-Dance-Pinball thing, when the reality is it's about designing something people will come back to over time, or what people miss nostalgia wise by filling in a niche.
>>
>>740652595
Fucking this and it's not necessarily about retro gaming either. As a recent example it's not about "Monster Hunter Wilds sales are 0" and more about "people find it normal to play World".
>>
>>740651339
What if they made new games that are more like the old games instead?
>>
>>740652709
I did like it, but overall it's not a game for me. I disliked the gimmick bosses in DS1 and that's pretty much every boss in DeS. I did like exploring the levels though, even if they were mostly linear. Seeing where things from Bloodborne and even Elden Ring had their origins was really cool too. The game has incredible art direction as well. It's crazy how much of the Souls identity they nailed early on. I'm very glad I played it.

Allant was a great fight with no gimmick solves though. Maybe I just fought him too early & that made the fight drag on longer than it usually would've, but it felt like a proper boss fight when most of the other bosses felt like paper tigers that died in under a minute.

I am the anon you replied to and I agree on all 3 fronts. I'll also add that a lot of that "expansion" you see among modern games (bloated lengths, everything open world, etc) genuinely just feels like a marketing gimmick to most at this point. It feels like a decision made by a financier instead of a developer. A game is not better because it lasts 100 hours or has infinitely recyclable content. The Metro games are some of the most memorable games anyone can play, and they're heavily scripted linear games. They just absolutely nail environment/feel, characters, tone, and reduction (no bloat, UI moved into game elements like wristwatches, etc.)

I also agree a lot of indies are becoming quite stale and unimaginative. I grasp that there's only so much out there in terms of variety, but not a ton of indies are trying something truly new or rehashing something old that has been left by the wayside (I have really enjoyed how Into The Dead: Our Darkest Days pulls heavy influence from one of The Last Stand flash games though.)

I think it's primetime for devs of any size to begin reducing scope and tightening experiences. The first indie to develop a setting and experience as tight as any of the Metro games, or as intriguing of a setting & story as the Deus Ex games will have my money, but it just isn't happening in either AAA or indie spaces atm. Ideas are stagnating across the board.

People just want to play good games and they're tired of playing wokeslop. That's why you have masterpieces like Starfield being the best selling games of 2026 just about three years later from launch. As it turns out, making good games matter in sales and people want to play and enjoy good games that constantly gets new updates and content.

All of the new games suck
The worst thing is that they dont even look good, before it was that maybe old games played better but new ones at least they had better graphics, now new slop had absolutely nothing going for them

It's time for new franchise owners in general, and lobbying should made illegal. These types of groups invade the industry with no skills and a political agenda. Some are hired simply based on their ability to use "gamer speak."
