A lot of people here haven't played Silent Hill, so they obviously choose to go to it without giving it a second though. However, in truth it depends on whether you're willing to risk your eternal soul or not. Obviously, you have a much much higher lethality rate in Raccoon city. Most people here would die to a single zombie, not to mention a horde of them, hunters, lickers and tyrants running around. And on top of all of that, if you somehow find a safehouse to "wait it out", you're gonna get nuked in a few days anyways. However, once you die, it's over, your pain is gone.
Silent Hill is different though, if you play your cards wrong you'll be stuck in it for eternity. At best you'll be stuck in a SH2 type limbo, constantly being reminded of all your failures and shortcomings and forgetting why you were even there in the first place. And that's assuming you get the "laid back" version of Silent Hill, one that is nowhere near as bad as it is in SH1 and SH3 when Alessa's influence enhances it. At its worst, you will most likely get stuck in the Otherworld and be raped by demons for eternity. Also, people tend to ignore Heather and Harry had plot armor. Harry was being protected by Cheryl/Alessa throughout most of his time in SH1, and Heather was being brought back to life repeatedly by Valtiel every time she died to make sure God was born in SH3, and she also had a super powerful demon inside her. An unloveable chud like (you) will not have that kind of help, and your asshole will be torn asunder immediately.
In short, the best answer is Raccoon City over SH3/SH1 Silent Hill, and SH2 Silent Hill over Raccoon City.

In every medium except games and film, originals are held in high regard and not fucked with and repackaged every x years to rake in money. If someone repainted the Mona Lisa for modern audiences it would be viewed with revulsion and contempt.
The original Silent Hill 2 is Silent Hill 2. A remake based on someone else's interpretation of a work is not only completely pointless, it serves to muddy the work and discussion of it by shifting a large chunk of the audience away from it by one whole layer of reinterpretation. It's arrogant, short-sighted and disrespectful. You could even make the argument for vandalism. It's the same reason why localizations that take liberties are garbage.
So yeah, my main criticism is "it's not the original". I could go through scene by scene and explain what they fucked up and why, but again I'm not gonna do that.

In real life Silent Hill enemies by in large aren't that threatening compared to RE where you essentially have to 'play' a no hit run irl for a chance at survival and taking too long will see you dead anyway due to them bombing the city since OBVIOUSLY its pre nuke as most Raccoon city media is pre nuke. I guess for the purposes of discussion, having to choose from a branching path implies you need to go THROUGH Silent Hill. There are probably roadblocks and impediments you need to deal with to get to some parts of the town, like James having to go through the apartments or Harry having to go through the sewers.
