When Half Life 2 released I was 14 but even then I thought it was stupid that I had to sign up for Steam. I only had 12KB/s (ISDN).

However there is a giant blind spot everyone had where PC was declared DEAD AS FUCK during the xbox 360 era. People forget this, but consoles were the future in everyone's eyes. PC was a JOKE.

But now in hindsight everyone's just going WAAAAHHHH I CAN'T BELIEVE VALVE PLAYED THE LONG GAME AND WON WAAAAAHHHH MONOPOLY!!!!!!
That's what you get for backing short-sighted companies. Your fanboyism during the console wars was low IQ and retarded, you were an imbecile.

I know this is just a bad faith bait thread but it was because steam was just more convenient. Physical games came with fucking retarded levels of DRM, worst offenders required online activation that was limited to 3 installations, ever. Reinstalling windows or upgrading your PC would consume an activation. Steam was a very reasonable choice in comparison, and since you needed internet to play anyway the discs were just an extra step.
>>
>>740662535
Piracy being at its peak in the 2000's is why the industry wanted PC gaming dead and treated all PC gamers like stinky thieves, Gaben actually saw them as customers and everyone started going back to PC when Steam grew in power
There wouldn't be much left to pirate if the industry succeeded in ditching PC gaming
>>
>>740662221
For a good 5 or 6 years after it was released Steam was absolutely despised by PC gamers and was largely a failure. In the late 2010s people for some reason got into their mind that Steam invented sales and if you wanted to buy a game for cheap on sale literally the only place that could be done is Steam. After that Steam amped up the social media aspects of Steam and that brought in the retard normies.

There was just Epic. Not "the industry". Epic said piracy was just too out of control on PC and went off to become a console exclusive dev for a short period of time. Nobody else abandoned the platform. During this supposed period of mass abandonment of PC gaming is also the same period where PC gaming saw some of its best exclusives released too.

No, a bunch of other studios also avoided PC gaming or only treated it with shitty low effort ports. A bunch of games like the first Darkness game, first Saint's Row and a number of other titles ignored PC platforms, probably because of heccin piracy. Hell, Halo Wars only came to PC like 7 years after original launch despite being a fucking RTS.

>if you don't have an offline installer saved
Difference is there is such a thing as an offline installer for GOG. There is not for Steam. Steam pretends to have an offline installer creator but it's pointless because it cannot be used without being online so may as well just download anyway.
>>

That was an exclusivity deal to promote the 360, not because of hatred for PC gamers and their piracy ways. Alan Wake was released on PC like a year later but it was over 10 years before it was seen on a non-Microsoft platform.

>>740663189

Steam functions as Digital Rights Management (DRM) because it requires you to run the Steam client and log into your account to authenticate, download, and play your games. This means you do not truly own the game files; instead, you pay for a revocable license.

And no, linking your list of indie trash DRM free games does not refute this.
>>
>>740664108
Valve actively encourages the use of third party software to prevent piracy. Valve themselves do not support piracy and the notion the only reason Gabe hasn't banned it all is because he lacks the guts to do so is nonsense.

>truly own the game files
You never did. Ever.

The physical disks were just a distribution system to get the game code into your PC. That code is not yours in any legal sense. You are buying a right to install and play it within their huge list of stipulations you agree to when you check the [Yes] box after you pretend to read the license agreement. Actually sit and read an End User License Agreement, you'll be shocked what's in there.

Most games come with a 90 day limited warranty. After that 90 days, you're on your own. If the disc breaks you have literally nothing but polycarbon refuse and can never install the game again until you buy a new copy.

I should find a photo of what a big box store's PC section looked like in 2010 and you kids would understand. There was one shelf with three AAA games and a wire rack of deer hunting simulators. Nobody interesting could make money because they couldn't generate the kind of inventory turnover Walmart needs to put you on a shelf. Then Steam and Amazon have an infinite shelf where the current AAA juggernaut and some indie game with 10K fans get treated the same with the same delivery infrastructure. It relieved a terrible creative bottleneck.

In a way, the size of the fucking PC game boxes created a stupid problem for storing them in a physical store. Even in a place like Babbages that was half PC games you could only squeeze so many of those two-inch wide, fourteen-inch tall fucking shirt-boxes on a shelf.

I think that box size was a holdover from the era when you needed 12 floppies to install a goddamned Apogee game and they never corrected it.

If you are found to be illegally holding intellectual property they will be held as evidence and you will be charged. Anything not illegal but just embarrassing for you will be revealed to your family, friends and employer.

By 2010 almost all PC games came in your standard DVD case. They were well aware that the size of PC boxes was ridiculous and in the late 90s and early 2000s they had mostly reduced them to like 1/3 the size they were previously.
>>
>>740662848
Sweeney clearly believed it, considering his actions.
>>
>>740665626
Also, forgot to mention the reason they were so big is carry over from when they used to need to hold a 5 1/4 inch floppy. They mostly shrunk a bit when they moved to 3 1/2 inch and then again when CD and jewel case became a thing and then again when DVD became a thing (the box was usually nothing more than a cardboard shell for a regular DVD case) and then finally boxes were mostly tossed.
>>
>>740665857
but i did explain it you fucking moron
read the first two lines>>740665397
the theory of ownership no matter the platform is that they can take shit away from you
the practical aspect of ownership is that no one can do shit when you have direct access to the files

what you've done here is that you compared the theoretical aspect of steam to the practical aspect of gog and you think you won because the practical terms are better than theoretical terms
i'll say it again just because you're a senile moron
in theory you don't truly own a single fucking game since they've always been revocable licences
in practice as long as you have direct access to the files it literally doesn't fucking matter
>>
>>740665626
It wasn't just the discs. A lot of PC games used to come with a ton of shit. Take an entry in the Ultima franchise - you got the game discs, sure, but you'd get a company catalog, at least two lore books(one grimoire, one worldguide,) a folded cloth map, and some kind of odd trinket depending on which game.
Some assholes packed in copyprotection shit like code wheels. And SimEarth took it too goddamn far with a 200+ page earth science book.
>>
>>740665889
But by 2010, PC gaming was nearly dead. By the time it was resurrected, every console was using Blu-ray, and that would require Blu-ray drives on PC to maintain parity (and the PC world was abandoning slow optical storage).
Even if you wanted to do physical games on Blu-ray, it would be painfully slow, and the version you had on disc might be well out of date after a while, forcing you to download content updates separately. If we're imagining a world where nobody's using Steam for that, that means waiting in queues at fileplanet or other shitty sites.
This isn't counting getting your key banned because someone genned the key you have and you were on at the same time, or hitting your limit for activated devices and having to beg a jeet via email or a support ticket system to clear the activations.
Steam solved all the bullshit. You download the newest version at ridiculous speeds, it's decompressed inline, and it's ready to play on download. Activation limits these days are within a 24 hour period, and really only piss off lincucks users. Shit just works.

Paid mods was awful, but they should have allowed a way to donate via Steam to modders. I wouldn't have done it, but I'm sure some paypiggy would have.

I gave epic a chance btw. Installed it, tried to play some games on there, with Remnant being free being the catalyst.
All I got was a half baked store, awful download times (maybe 4x slower than downloading updates on steam) and a store I just didn't want open or available.
Maybe i'm an outlier in giving it a chance but I did and there was zero reason to actually move or do so. Everything was shittier and it never got better.
So yeah maybe it's worrying that Steam is so big but really all it would take is a good platform and people would leave it and go elsewhere.

>Pushed paid mods
That was clearly an experiment on Valve's part, Bethesda was the one who was pushing for it. After the pushback Valve pulled out and never tried implementing it again, while Bethesda went and implemented it themselves with the creation club (something they've implemented in every game they've made since). If Valve truly wanted paid mods, there would still be paid mods on steam.
>Payment processors
Ah yes the Valve is Jewish controlled because the digital online store didn't commit suicide by defying the duopoly that is capable of crippling nations by denying access.

But Valve doesn't sell user information nor it doesn't require an ID to use the service even in places like the UK, which is antisemitic and a big schlomo-no-no.

In the early 00s Bill Gates decided he wanted to expand Microsoft's PC monopoly in to home console domination. The original Xbox was supposed to be a multimedia device that would sit in every living room, like the Super Nintendo or the Playstation, and those Japanese consoles would be DROPPED. Microsoft also sunk a lot of money in to pushing anti-Japanese racism in the journoshill, developer studios & publishing industry to help that process along.
Of course Ol' Billy retired but none of his M$ successors really understood what his goal with the Xbox was: to choke Japanese consoles to death the same way he choked Japanese Personal Computing to death. Billy's successors were corporate rat retards. Anyway, Xbox ended up a joke, but that was the initial agenda.

Piracy does not matter, otherwise no game that releases on GOG would be successful.
You just need bare minimum competence when it comes to developing on an appropriate budget and actually selling your game.
>>740664580
Adding another layer of easily circumvented DRM isn't going to make it harder to pirate. All that is needed to avert piracy of anyone who actually matters (the target audience) is a bare minimum speedbump. DRM is the ultimate placebo when it comes to piracy, because pirates don't magically become paying customers.
>But what about Denuvo?
The only reason developers use Denuvo is to slow down discussion of shit games, so that they get a few more sales in the first weeks before enough people have played the game and start complaining louder than the shills.
>>740665484
The Trojan horse that killed physical on PC was fucking CONTU and their bullshit when they introduced software copyright. Companies instantly started trying to sell you just a license to their software, rather than the software itself.
>There is a viable alternative to the problems raised by Bill Gates in his irate letter to computer hobbyists concerning "ripping off" software. When software is free, or so inexpensive that it's easier to pay for it than to duplicate it, then it won't be "stolen".
Styling on retards complaining about piracy is older than piracy.
>>740666913
People like to say it, because console ports in the late 2000s and early 2010s were fuck-awful and companies kept whining about not selling as much on PC to shirk responsibility.
Everything was degenerating into broken functionality, endless accounts, endless launchers and shit DRM until the industry finally stopped being quite so retarded.

GoG can't take away your exe, but steam can? You retarded or something? I don't even have steam installed on one of the systems I copied my game to, it is literally impossible for valve to do anything.

Also, Nintendo doesn't have to take away your cart, they can just stop selling the hardware DRM required to transform the piece of plastic that is the cart into a playable game and eventually you simply can't get access to the cart no matter how much you want to. Might take a long time, but there will be a day where emulation (copyright infringement) is the only way to get access.

UK is a 1984 dystopian shithole where wrongthink lands you in jail

Even then this is a specific case involving devkits and prototypes(which is why police didn't confiscate his controllers and cables) which Sega wanted to destroy for some reason because Japanese companies are autistic trannies who hate preservation for some reasson

Nobody is going to come to your home to confiscate your legally purchased Sega Saturn copy of NiGHTS

Good on this guy for refusing to give up the devkits though
I wish UK cops(who protect criminals and muzzies) and SEGA corporate executives painful deaths

I want to rant about something on Steam and this is as good of a place as any to do it.

>THE VERY FIRST REVIEW IS NEGATIVE
Ooooohh, when I see this, I lose interest in the game immediately. If I were these game devs, I'd really want my first review to be a positive one. Makes me wonder if anybody else feels the way I do and if game devs are going to try to complain about it and force positive ones on top.
