Modern localizers would go "WHAT'S POPPIN, DADDY-O? PERCHED LIKE AN OWL, ARE WE?!"

Both your "literal translation" and corrected examples are literal translations, and a whole game like that would be flat and wooden, lacking the charm that the game has in Japanese. I'm not saying your localization example is good, but I think you're going too far in the opposite direction and ending up on a translation approach that is losing a lot of info as well, it's just not as obvious.
