The most important thing about a design is that it needs to have appeal, but appeal is obviously subjective and very hard to grade. The easiest way to make a design appealing is just to make the character attractive, and that's the exact opposite of what most big publishers and even indie devs are doing these days. Whether that's intentional or not, I've got my own thoughts on the subject that I'm not going to go into because that's its own can of beans, but it's a very clear pattern and so the easiest (and therefore most common) reply is "make it sexier".I could go into what gives a design appeal but I think Roald Dahl has said it better than I could.
