What are some action games that you like that are lesser known or discussed? We all know your classic DMC, NG, Bayo, Godhand, MGR, etc.But what about those lesser games that for whatever reason, are not as remembered as these pillars of the genre?Do you know any B-side, jank action games that you are fond of? Feel free to shill it in this thread.

In particular, i'd like to mention Malicious.Started as a humble PS3 game without much fanfare about you fighting 5 big enemies. Solid bases, the weapons you get are fun to use and the game has this cool mechanic of gaining aura fighting small enemies, than you spend said aura in the big boss through moves and a DT-style mode. And get rankings at the end based on the number of enemies killed, the damage taken and the time you took to kill the boss. Short and sweet, but a glorified tech demo in the grand scheme of things. Then they rereleased the game for the vita, with an extra campaign. Then they rereleased the game again for the PS4 with even more content. Has a typical moveset: Sword, fists, a gun style projectile to be spammed, and a lance that is like a 3-d stinger that can launch you to the skies and has a strangely flaoty but also heavy combat. Is weird, but in a cool way.I played the vita version emulated and ran decently well for the most part outside of some visual errors while loading and some audio bugs. Can't wait until PS4 emulation is good enough to play the final 'complete' version. If you have either a vita or a ps4, try giving it a try.https://youtu.be/RUulPL3uwr8?t=72

>>740808923Redpill me on Slitherhead. Isn't that one by the Silent hill 1/Gravity rush guy?
>>740809421YeahIts an action brawler with a "possession" mechanic kinda like driver san francisco.Swapping is encouraged in fights because enemies tend to keep their guard up against you and cant be stunned easily. There is a parry mechanic that feels weird because it uses the right stick, like god hand, and you have to flick the right direction but its actually very rewarding to get good at. Has witch time from bayo but it only activates after enough successful parries, and it can be extended by possessing different people. It looks very jank when you watch gameplay but it feels better to actually play it.It has medicore to bad reviews everywhere but i think people just suck ass at the game, and also the game was insanely overlooked by the general population to begin with. The worst thing i can say is that the mission based structure makes replaying the game feel like a drag. But i got all but one achievement in a single playthrough which took 19 hours, and the story's twist actually suprised me.Its a good game that feels straight out of those 6th gen experimental titles that were more common. Just expectedly misunderstood, the game was never gonna have mass appeal especially in todays market.https://youtu.be/4MlHB3wHsMs?si=Uty7hCFJXVAlZqjP

>>740813057Finally rereleasing Muramasa bodes well for them also deciding to put Odin Sphere on PC as well, it makes sense they did Muramasa first since that version has been locked to Vita this whole time. But Odin Sphere is awesome and very much worth checking out.As for Malicious Fallen, it'd also be nice for the game to be more available elsewhere, I'm not sure what the developer is even working on now if anything but for how good and unique that game was they should be more active.
>>740807297Worth noting is that Fallen/Rebirth add a major improvement in enemy AI where they clump better. It's such a small thing but makes the game way fucking better cuz in the base version grinding Aura could be a fucking slog sometimes

>>740806587You guys lied to me about marlow briggs, that game sucks. As for my picks:1.Vindictus2.PN033.No more HeroesNMH has the most recognition among the three of them, but even then it seems like nobody actually played the games, just that they know about them. PN03 is basically only discussed for perverse reasons, and Vindictus cant get a thread off the ground to save its life because it almost immediately gets spammed with ">kslop" nonsense. That game cant catch a break in the wider world either. Total biscuit covered it and nobody watched, it lost the mmobomb all time brackets to warframe after salty maplestory cucks decided to vote for warframe because their particular nexon game wasnt going to win, and then when they revealed the remake asmongold tanked its hopes immediately by claiming the reboot of the 15 year old game was just amateur devs using unreal engine to cashgrab elden ring money.
>>740815838I personally couldn't get into NMH at all.Like, yeah, the rush of the first level was really sick and had that killer junkie feel to it. But as the game kept going, it just started to feel like a drag.Haven't played PN03, but seems interesting, even beyond the protagonist booty. This is the first time i've seen someone shill Vindictus beyond coomer gifts (and that 'overwhelmingly negative' score doesn't do it any favors). Care elaborate why you think it's good or decent at least. It's f2p so it shouldn't be much commitment, but i still would like to see your thoughts on it. Is the sequel anything to look forward to, whenever that shit releases?
>>74080658710000 bullets
I enjoyed it back in the day but honestly have no idea how it is now. I'd have to go back and replay it.
>>740816215NMH is weird for sure, all three of them have a problem with the mooks feeling like shit to fight, and the open worlds were not very well done either, so I can see why people drop it.>and that 'overwhelmingly negative' score doesn't do it any favorsyeah, you know why its overwhelmingly negative? Because the modern gamer is a massive retard with no self control and serious skill issues. Just look at the reviews, its embarrassing the reasons they give, and mostly boils down to "I dont like the publisher", "i paid for useless cosmetics and im mad about it", "ive played this for 10k hours and now im bored", or claims that its somehow p2w.For context, I have played the game since closed beta 16+ years ago, and I have never paid for shit, not only that but I seriously dont see how paying would help at all since at best it can get you a cosmetic you can then sell for gold, but the gold only helps if youre a sped desperate to squeeze an extra 2% damage out. In a raid with my guildmates, I was the only one who had standard equipment, with everyone else having minmaxxed, despite that I still took second place in dmg, and only lost out to one of the server's top players. Its genuinely a skill issue. Now it was a better game at one point, but the second director decided he wanted it to be more like wow so he made it rely more and more on stats and items. After a few years of that nonsense he was kicked out of his position and the current director walked a lot of that back. Its still not the same game as it once was (originally it was paced more like dark souls, where as now its like dmc), but thats where the remake comes in, opting to return to the old, "heavy" combat and extreme difficulty. Its also unfortunate that they have gone full bore into the goonerbaiting, but you can just hide everyone's absurd tits anyways and continue to enjoy a multiplayer character action game with incredibly tight hitboxes (vidrel).
Bump for interestWe need more action games nowdays. Im tired of everything being a Dark Souls clone.
>>740818773oh, and in the video i should note that isnt a dodge they are doing, thats pressing the run button for a second to start the animation, which causes the character to duck down, which is being used to duck under the attacks. The game was made with care and attention to detail.

>>740819510Khazan and modern TN action RPGs like Nioh and SoP. SoP in particular doesn't have stamina so your aggression isn't limited and there actually is a reasonable focus on crowd control if you play solo. It is admittedly heavy on RPG build making for endgame stuff but the core action mechanics are still fun enough even if you hate RPGs. Nioh and Khazan do have stamina but still are aggressive and combo focused. They start out a bit more limited but by the end of them, they allow for very aggressive play. I've got my eye on Phantom Blade 0 right now, it looks like normal attacks don't consume stamina and crowds seem to be more common.
>>740806587the movie tie in game for the 2004 van hellsing movie is a better "bad sequel to devil may cry" then the actual dmc2.for one thing it controls pretty much identically including having the exact same jump arcs, it has all the same mechanics, it's just very janky because it's a western made game and more gun focused like dmc2. it's got a lot of soulful features like a cheat code where every time you take damage your characters RBG values get randomized, another one that turns off all the texturing and makes it black and white

>>740820069That's why I put "soulslike" in quotation marks because I don't really think it's a genre. I've noticed that a lot of people dismiss any action game with lock-on+strafing as "exactly like Dark Souls" which annoys me. Everybody always just focuses on parrying and dodging which are defensive mechanics without looking at how much offensive potential a game has.

>>740820312ok but nioh DOES have a lot of specific things that are exactly like what dark souls does, and SOP has none of them, so calling 1 game "soulslike" does fit but not for the other
How's it looking
>>740820864So how IS other m as an action. It's made by team ninja so it can't be that bad. If i ignore the plot and that it's supposed to be a metroid game (i.e. exploration and shit), can i have a decent time?
>>740820628A lot of those things are fairly general game mechanics though, like leveling up and allocating stat points for example.
>>740821067ok but the entire gameplay ecosystem of the leveling up and allocating stat points that you need a certain amount of stats invested to get value out specific kinds of gear as they have different stats they scale with to different amounts in a combat system that requires stamina to do your attacks and has pretty much the exact same control scheme and spells that are essentially consumable items you have set casts of based on what you prepare in a combat system where you absorb exp from every enemy you kill and can lose them when dying unless you backtrack to where you were you stop being "this is a thing many video games do" and become "we added a stance system to dark souls and blocking is actually worth using"and again, SOP has NONE of this

>>740821842The control scheme uses square/triangle for heavy/light attacks and SoP's is actually closer to DaS with attacks being on R1/R2 by default. Both games offer different control layouts of course but that's kind of an odd thing to bring up. When looking at the actual action combat similarities, stamina and lock-on is really the main thing in common with DaS but the game is played in a far more aggressive and action-oriented way due to ki pulsing and being able to open enemies up for larger combo strings. Souls did influence Nioh but I believe the game should still have a lot of appeal to action fans. I'm assuming you don't like it however which is fine though.
>>740806720fpbp
>>740821842Removing the lie about the control scheme being similar:>stat requirements and scaling exist (differently)>stamina exists (completely differently)>consumable spells (only present in two Souls games) exist>you drop your exp on death (which isn't a currency)Padding your post out while somehow completely missing all the actual details about how the mechanics function, because it would make it even clearer how different the games are in function, does not strengthen your case at all. Nioh taking some inspiration from Souls does not stop it from being ultimately a different beast in practice for anyone that understands even a little about both games. And SoP does have stat scaling, its default control scheme is far closer to Souls (despite the second preset being a better Nioh copy), consumable spells exist through Instant Abilities and the monster bell and you drop your max MP on death. This still doesn't matter because it is a very different game in practice and each one mentioned is an outstanding action game.

>>740824963PC is decent. Needs some troubleshooting like turning off forcevsfog in the ini of Sands and getting an uncorrupted video file for Warrior. And limiting the fps to 58-60 so the physics don't break, and maybe run in xp compat mode if you're having trouble booting em.There's a nice widescreen fix for all 3.Pcgamingwiki has all the shit you need to know. I can run the trilogy on win11 with no crashes, stable framerate and in my monitor's native res with anti alias enabled in the gpu panel. Can download for free from goggames. Arguably better than steam, the video file in warrior is not corrupted there. My all time fave vidya trilogy.Could also emu ps2 if you're lazy to do this shit. Slightly worse looking but no sound bugs in warrior and thrones.Could also emu the psp version of those two. Waaay worse textures due to limitations but there are some kewl levels that were cut from the other versions (maybe for good reason, fucks with the pacing). Still interesting for curious anons. But don't fucking play the ps3 versions. The board loves to shittalk all remasters but this shit is beyond unsalvageable with horrid "hd" upscaled textures and almost all shadowmapping gone. >>740830291I played El Shaddai but that's another one that's sort of memory-holed and hard to talk about since it's been so long since I've played it. I do remember liking it though.
How was Dirge of Cerberus again? I played it back then, enjoyed it, but now I can't remember how much melee was in it. I think it was mostly a TPS but I do remember using melee stuff as well. That's another one on the list of memory-holed games that I should go back to.

Obligatory Rising Zan mention. Insane how a company that never really made another 3D action game before or after got ~75% of the way to the blueprint of the genre on the PS1.In terms of modern indie stuff I love Magenta Horizon, Aces Wild, Myths Are 100% True, Aztez & Traumacore Violence; they all happen to be 2D games but I think it's cool that so much can be done with combat in 2D (not even mentioning beat-em-ups like Fight N Rage or Final Vendetta). Decline's Drops, En Garde & Super Crush KO are very good too. I bought Kijutsu Rider but haven't booted it yet, seems like a decent if jank time. I also love Battle Chef Brigade but the combat in that is a little stiff and the appeal is more the mixture of Action, Puzzle & Cooking games together.>>740806587I swear half the reason I've considered getting an Xbox of any kind over the years was Otogi 1&2. I'm still waiting to see if they'll ever get ports but that seems less and less likely. Assault Spy is probably the best direct clone of DMC's gameplay style out there, and Marlow is very charming for a budget clone of GoW while playing pretty decently.>>740822476Based game. Fill-in-Cafe made some really good stuff during their short run.>>740828146All four of these rule though Spikeout filtered me pretty hard. I suppose it's just a matter of learning it though, I've only done a couple basic playthroughs (once co-op).
I kind of want From to port Ninja Blade so I can see if it's any good. I played the demo back then and I think I sort of liked it but never ended up buying it. Maybe it wasn't good though, I dunno.
>>740837250On the subject of PSX games. I feel the need to mention Gunnm Martian Memory. Another early prototype to the genre with a lot of stuff like black and counterattack, input movements and stuff. It's a surprisingly cool game, and the fact it's related to Gunnm just makes the whole thing weird that it happened. Only game the studio ever did and was directed by the mangaka's brother. How is aces wild? Been in my radar for a while. As for Otogi, it runs okay-ish on xemu. 1 was is consistently decent with some slow downs in some missions but nothing unplayable. 2 is a bit more finicky so i'd wait holding out for newer xemu versions.
I liked Blood Will Tell, it's got shades of a proto-Soulslike in there. It's not one large interconnected world, but you can move back and forth in the levels and replay them. It's got a ton of bosses, many of them optional, with some obscure secrets and triggers like typical From quests.Dororo also has the most perfect story setup for this kind of game where you acquire new skills, instead of the metroidvania trope where you get amnesia or lose all our gadgets in the beginning. You are born missing various organs and body functions because your father traded them away in a blood pact with demons, so the game consists of beating said demons to regain them and growing stronger. A neat detail for example is that the game starts in black and white, and switches to color after beating the first boss and regaining your eyesight.
Urban Reign tends to go overlooked, and is a whole lot better than it first appears.
>>740815838PN03 is a terrible action game. It looks pretty but it's clunky as fuck. For comparison, Metroid Prime isn't anything special in terms of combat, but feels way better to play than PN03. I'm still not sure any of you fucks have played it, even the guy spamming her ass animation.
>>740838683Never heard of Gunnm, very interesting.>How is aces wild? Been in my radar for a whileThink something akin to Otogi (from my understanding) where you're very floaty and travel through the air with your strings but instead of breaking terrain you bounce enemies around like Bangai-O and you have a somewhat homing dash (more Arcana Heart than DBFZ). Very fast, very fluid, very aggressive enemies. It has a dynamic difficulty you can see in the UI kinda like God Hand as well. It's very much just a bunch of levels with three characters to pick from so if the combat doesn't click there's not much else for you but I loved it even when it beat my ass.
>>740834673shit, i remember this was one of the few beat em up games i owned back then. I remember it being quite simplistic but was a whole lot fun with co-op.
>>740834673I'm not sure if they used the PC version as a base or if it's just PSX emu, but this was re-released earlier this year. I only played the demo as a kid so was kinda curious, but apparently the game is complete ass.
>>740838683Thanks for reminding me this existed. The new Stellar Blade trailer made me start re-reading the Battle Angel Alita manga. Probably as good a time as any to try out the game, maybe watch the old anime too.
Taiwanese 3d brawler with some pretty cool shit like timing your super attacks to counter enemy super attacks and also some enraging shit like enemies randomly blocking you necessitating spamming low attacks when you can, said low attacks and other moveset unlocks being tied to RNG and difficulty settings and Act 3 as a whole making you hate women.

>>740846898I THINK OTOGI 2 SUCKSThe camera is fucking awful, Ninja Gaiden tier awful, the gameplay is jank as fuck and incredibly stiff, the gimmicky level design is awful, the RPG progressionshit is ruinous to actual action game design
Your game doesn't have mechanics right? Those are a crutch, ARCADEGOD games don't have them
We Love DMC2 now?
>>740846967I fucking hate Mork so god damn much it's unreal. Such a faggot.
>>740846660just play dmc3, where only like 1/3rd of the enemies can be juggled and none of the bosses can
Gud bread. Very nice.>>740847087Not gonna lie I never jumped on the hate train. Immaculate visuals and good ost. Fun campy story.Gameplay's eh but there are worse games.
>>740847087I've always maintained that its atmosphere is top notch, and is a game that deserves a remakeTo be honest there's tons of interesting games that should be remade, instead we remake games that are already goodSociety...
>>740847096Why? He was one of the first people that bashed (justifiably so) Demake 4
>>740847976>this shovelware trash is good because uhhhhhh a million years ago a single outlet no one ever respected gave god hand a bad review
>>740843752>Gear Fighter DendohI saw a guy streaming that game last week, it's surprising how I never heard about it before. Reminds me a lot of Mad Stalker.
>>740806720bbbp
>>740848376Are you talking about Wanted Dead? Haven't played it, but I think most of his opinions are on point with how nearly all modern action games follow the same blueprint or how certain games work on each playthrough. On IGN yeah, I know it's low hanging fruit to bash on reviewers but it's important to not let these faggots forget how they tanked one of the most beloved videogames simply because they suck at them. Also giving retarded baby sloppa 8s and 9s/10
>>740848932You're just as retarded as MorkMork literally doesn't even play the games he jerks off, or modern games, he's claimed you can master games in just an hourHe's a fraud
>>740847595peak reddit post
>>740846660>don't like action games>what action game should i playSome amazing posts in this thread
>>740849015>played a bunch of action games>got really good at one>hurr durr you don't like them
>>740848969>he's claimed you can master games in just an hourSome shitty games you can master in an hour, like assassin's creed or madden or 90%+ of fotm slop
>>740849302LOLMork literally doesn't play either the games he claims to love, like Ninja Gaiden 2, let alone modern gamesHe's a retard that spreads genuine lies
>>740849316All backseat game designers are retards but you seem in love with that guy
>>740849556>continually call him a non-playing retarded grifter>"uh actually you like him"Is this the genius of nu-/v/
I think DmC4 is tee totally fabulous and DmC VI looks like slop. Literally can not tell the difference between it and the phone game.
>>740849627I DON'T WANT TO SLAP BEYBLADES AROUND OR ROLL SOME FUCKING DICE
>>740849582>continually call himobsessed
>>740849657Name 1 good DMC level. Bloody Palace isn't a level.
>>740849724DMC 1 has genuinely great level design and is fun, it's the only well designed DMC by an actual dev, instead of potential man
>>740849760Kamiya probably just took all the credit which is why his guilty conscious doesn't even acknowledge the game's existence.
How could this happen...................the proxy posters done plum turned me into Mork & Itsuno now..........................wow................schway...............kino................
>>740818990Love me all the Shinobi games.3 is probably the peak. Shadow Dancer on Genesis is the most underrated.
>>740848983Shut the fuck up and die you niggerfaggot. How's that for reddit?
I didn't see breakdown mentioned so i thought i would put it here. I wish there was more First person brawler games. Riddick has some brawler combat but it's mostly you being stealth.
>>740806587Blade of Darkness
>>740849976Off the top of my head there's>Condemned>Chernaya Metka (Traque)>Zeno Clash 1 and 2Upcoming and fucking hyped:>Scirocco Thugs
my father was a plumber, and i knew plumbing fittings and applications more than most apprentices that come into the trade, so i just followed in his footsteps. also didnt do any other education after high school. there are people with IT degrees and other shit at my company that went into plumbing. just because i passed school easily doesnt mean anything to me, it was very easy, catering to colored kids. they also axed a lot of curriculums in high school before i got in because of this, and budget constraints
>>740850131That's fantastic but what the fuck does that have to do with action games
>>740850150nta but it's probably because action games also cater to colored kids.
Doesn't one of the civilization games let you play as Hitler?
>>740819826>>740820078>SW Force Unleashed>Overgrowth>Marc Ecko's Getting Up>Alice Madness Returns>Enclave>Heavenly Sword>Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas Oogie's Revenge>Forgotten Realms Demon Stone>Oni (Bungie)
>>740850439And>Van Helsing PS2 How could I forget that
>>740850439Also again>Spirits & Spells>The Haunted Mansion>Balan Wonderworld
>>740843436The PS2/Wii Baroque remake utterly kills the atmosphere and makes a lot of stupid changes, but the original, far better versions are more like straight mystery dungeon games so would fit the thread even less. Still very worth checking out the original though.
>>740850802This is bait and I want to slap you
>>740850862I only care about mechanics because I'm not a casual.
Everyone talks about the middle earth games but never the return of the king.
>>740806587We agree Sonic and DMC are the same genre?
I like jank & glitches
Great, the schizo is here
>>740851307>return of the kNigg
>>740843564it was supposed to get a full remake but time and budgets didn't allow considering it was a secret project meant to be a surprise for Phil Spencer's birthday, it was his favorite original Xbox gameit's pretty good, real time card based combst
>>740853520What are you 6. Grow up
>>740845250only ever played the original on xbox, crazy the kinds of stuff microsoft managed to get as exclusives
>>740853564I thought it was funny, why are you such a killjoy
Wow GunValkyrie was shit.
>>740841664idk if it is that version but fighting force was pretty cool back then.>>740841221yeah you could also hit your friends with your moves lmao
