I just beat OoT for the first time at 30 years old. I can see why people are obsessed with it, what an achievement, especially for the time. Very good game, I doubt the remake will capture any of its soul though.
>>740811817>especially for the timewho knows, it was 30 years ago
Yeah it is really good.Sure, you could make the argument its overrated (since it has a 99 on metacritic, etc.), but even if you feel that way it's still objectively a solid game even today. I have no idea what they'll do to the remake to "enhance" the game, especially when OoT3D already exists if you just want some basic QoL
Criticisms I have of it:>Too much handholding. Navy isn't that annoying, what's annoying is being told how to use items even when you're about to finish the game.>Z-targeting is hit or miss. It can be quite tricky to actually get it to work.>FUCK like likesWhat I really liked:>The tone is amazing. It's a great fairy tale with dark moments, surprisingly dark in fact.>Seeing the ruined town for the first time was excellent, redeads are scary rapists>The dungeons are basically all fun, Water Temple's Shadow Link fight was a standout.>The amount of dungeons is quite generous.>The music and sound design is excellent. >The progression is satisfying.>The game's length is perfect.A very fun journey. I give it a 9/10.
>>740812559I think it's what the open-world Zelda games are lacking, that curated experience. Story beats, thematic progression, stakes.
>>7408118177/10 from me
>>740812450Yeah, it does genuinely hold up in most respects. I can see how it influenced so many other games, both for good and bad (cinematics pushed to the limits in later titles). I'm looking forward to Majora's Mask. Oh, and I did NOT expect to see fucking cape physics in a game this old and certainly not cape degradation either. Did we even see this again until the Arkham games came out? >>740812070There's nothing quite like OoT in the 5th gen.
>>740812961>I'm looking forward to Majora's Mask. You should, it's very comparable to OoT. Some things better, some things worse. But it's not a notably worse game, at minimum, and probably somewhere better than that, so you should enjoy it.Now get out of your own thread to avoid MM spoilers
>>740812790Yeah, OoT has the perfect amount of openness where you can purse things a bit out of order but it's all still content and there's no filler or bloat. I wish it remained that way. I played BOTW before OoT and while I did really enjoy BOTW I'm just more partial to this type of experience, same reason why I love DS1.>>740813073Good to know, I've heard that some prefer it. The fact that it's apparently even darker has me really intrigued. If only Zelda retained that dark atmosphere.
>>740811817>I just beat OoT for the first time at 30 years old. I can see why people are obsessed with it, what an achievement, especially for the time. Very good game, I doubt the remake will capture any of its soul though.Yeah pretty much, the worst part is since it's nintendo the remake won't likely be even easier than OoT already managed to be.Still a good game though. You play wind waker?
>>740813219I prefer it, yeah. It doesn't try to do the same thing oot did, which is refreshing.
>>740812559>>740812961OoT can look extremely good at times, and for some reason it feels like not enough people acknowledge it. Overall it's not the best looking N64 game, but it has certain moments that look incredible. The final fight looks absolutely amazing, and the dark link room is pure ludokino.
>>740813261God I hope Nintendo don't make it easier. Considering they did MQ I think it's not impossible we'll get something challenging. >Wind WakerNope not yet. It's supposed to be really good too, right? Looks comfy.
>>740813430>Nope not yet. It's supposed to be really good too, right? Looks comfy. It's very good with a few one big annoyance in the late game that brings it down, unfortunately it's a very long winded annoyance. It is fun though.
>>740811817I also played it for the first time a couple years back and was pretty surprised how boring the first few dungeons were.
>>740813371I haven't played many N64 games, you're saying some look even better? I was honestly blown away by a lot of the stuff in OoT, graphically. The faces on characters are very well done with lots of different expressions. Light years ahead of most games in that generation. And yeah Ganon looked sick.
>>740813597man you took some great screenshots, really captures the magic of the game
I've gotten to the point where weird-looking remakes don't piss me off as much as they just fascinate me. And boy howdy is this WEIRD. I'm genuinely interested to see how it turns out.
>>740813296reminds me of egoraptors old rant on zelda.he is a fool in most aspects but even a fool can spit out wisdom on accident. He rages against ocarina of time for (among many other things) providing a formula the majority of the successive games are terrified of deviating from. Its interesting that Majora's mask, the successor, didn't follow that formula at all and is still so impactful and beloved.
>>740813597In terms of N64 graphics, Rare was pretty famous for how hard they pushed the system.
>>740813571I didn't think they were boring, though they weren't very challenging. I enjoyed collecting the three magic rocks so I could get the master sword and after that the game really ramps up. >>740813738The game just keeps throwing visually neat things at you so it's hard to stop spamming the screenshot button haha.
>>740812961
>>740812559
>>740812450>what they'll do to the remake to "enhance" the gammake it a modern game with modern graphics> especially when OoT3D already exists and? its just a patch with better colors, that itsyou retard
>>740811817>I just beat OoT for the first time at 30 years old.Yeah you're faking it.
>740814102dumb bait, not giving you a (You) sorry.
>>740813992I'm a PS1 guy and yeah this just looks so fucking good. Must've blown everybody's nuts off at the time. If I keep playing more N64 games I might switch teams.>>740813891Ah right, I've yet to do Perfect Dark or 007. The Banjos, that one bug game they made and the raunchy squirrel game looks fun too. Also Skyrim totally ripped off this Windmill shot in its trailer.
>>740813073The difference between OoT and MM is dramaturgia. OoT is a fairy tale monomyth that ebbs and flows like a 3-act drama, with a "humble beginnings", a "departure", "ordeal", "a big change", "the magic elixir", "the big twist" and "final confrontation" and "return to beginning."Majora's Mask is a bit more like a short-story. It's a very cool game with dungeons that are equally well made, interesting dialog, and a cool central premise but the finale feels like you've been through a much more condense narrative that is described with less events in between that fills it out. It's literally like reading a short story where you have to dig into "the thing the character said on page 5" and analyze it symbolically. OoT is more about the "feeling" as you go through series of changes, and the catharsis of it finally being over at the end, like a big odyssey that the player has gone on that started small, got really big, and ends with a bang.To me there is no world where MM is actually the better game of the two, and a lot of its internet-cult fanaticism has a tendency to inflate how good it is based on how deep you believe it is after years of popular interpretations. It does not have the same kind of self-explanatory purity that OoT had.
>>740814284I remember looking at the mountain textures as a child and realizing "N64 is better than PS1" because it could blur the textures. Honestly back then, I felt like N64 was a lot better than a PS1, so my nostalgia for the graphics is different than how I feel about a PS1 game.I really love PS1 aesthetics nowadays and I definitely see it a bit more actually looking at N64 games at their native res with dithering, but on the CRT PS1 games always looked noticeably messier and the 3D always was a bit simpler. Like characters often having block-hands on PS1 but the N64 port would have open hands with 2 joints and texture to make the rest look like fingers. OoT also does that a bit. They're not fully open hands yet.I just remember this game really captivating me, because of the way it uses 3D atmosphere and sound.
>>740814191Scout's honor. My first Nintendo console was a 3DS but I didn't really want to play OoT on a small screen. So I put it off for like a decade since I don't really play Nintendo home console games anyway. Well, until now anyway. I'm going to be playing through the whole series.>>740814413Very cool. Yeah, OoT really felt like you were playing a fairy tale. I enjoyed all the tropes and how the story was set up. It's all executed very well.
It seems I'm late since you've already beaten OOT. I hope you don't mind me posting it anyways.https://files.catbox.moe/732faw.zip (OOT)https://files.catbox.moe/pbes2e.zip (MM 2ship)https://files.catbox.moe/0bl8bv.zip (MM Recomp)
>>740813752I love the way it looks based on this early trailer. What worries me more if it FEELS enough like a remake of OoT. I'm very annoyed with modern sound design "best practices" and I had an issue with how "delicious" everything sounds in Breath of the Wild. To me this won't be OoT if it doesn't have very intense sound effects that evoke atmosphere. So much of OoT's impression comes from how it uses atmospheric fog effects and the sound often having a long reverb that makes every environment feel huge and ominous. Dark Souls has a lot of realistic and gritty sounds but they honestly have a lot of the same "3D Atmosphere" Ocarina had at the time, because it really made the world feel daunting by having things echo, and kind of "going into the mind" vibes through several moments. It's like any time you enter a new environment, especially first rooms of dungeons in OoT there's something that screams "Be afraid." and it totally works.I've seen many YouTubers play through it and when they get into Forest Temple they go "what the fuc...?" when the aesthetic and music hits them.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_G7Haf1aOI
This game was so fucking good, it actually convinced people to buy an N64 instead of a PSX.
>>740813371because every troon plays the pc port at 1440p 60fps with a texture pack so it looks worse than it really is. play it like normal on a crt and it's an amazing looking game>inb4 just lower the res and it looks good nice cope durrryea if you play modern games at 360p they'll look like sewage. if you play old games at super high res they'll look like dogshit
>>740814631I've always been a PS1 guy just because I love how JP devs were able to go absolutely wild on it, so much kino and the aesthetics of the warping are cool too. But if OoT is anything to go by the N64 has stuff you can't find on the PS1. I've played a ton of PS1 and there's maybe 1 other game with faces that are as good as in OoT. For sure no cape physics. And there's no third person open world action game with graphics like that and such a long draw distance. Brightis has the first part but its draw distance is shit. OoT remembering where you parked your horse also impressed me. It's definitely full of technology. And tits. There's a lot of huge tits in this game.
>>740814995trvke
>>740814952btw this OST is a DEI nightmare, because it's samples based on african tribe rituals, so the sound samples are literally jungle flutes and niggas doing tribal yells, because "forest = jungle etc" when Koji was creating the idea from a sample CD.I think they'll replace this with some generic shit, the way Ratchet & Clank Remake basically had none of the OST style of the game it was remaking.
>>740814995Troons just really want to yassify everything that moves, so they can study it extra close and become what they see.
>>740815176yeah I've already made peace with the fact that the soundtrack will raped into oblivion
>>740814838I actually don't have MM yet so thanks anon>>740814995I played it on a PC CRT actually. Looked very nice. Too bad reshade crapped out halfway through so I couldn't make it seem completely like a CRT TV but oh well.
>>740813992I wonder how they did ganon's cape with the tech of the time
>>740811817remake will be shittendies will buy anywayi will laugh if they pull a ff7 remake
>>740814995This is true, I just replayed it on a 32" CRT with composite and it looked amazing. The blurriness suits it very well.
>>740815476>>740814995If you have the game be sharp the UI elements also stand out as blurry. The blur is necessary
why does oot 20fps feel so much smoother than modern day unreal indian 5 20 fps?
>>740815592My guess is its because its very stable so you get used to it
what a garbage thread
>>740815592Because the game actually runs at 60 fps in terms of inputs iirc, the animations are just lower fps.
>>740811817Remakes never capture the soul of the originals.
I hope the remake changes this scene so that he has epona with him to match the version of this scene we see in Majora's Mask.
>>740815592the game was built on and designed around a tick system so everything moves/animates/interacts on each frame that goes by. it ends up feeling really polished because of it. a lot of old games had this setup. it's also why upping the framerate limit just speeds up the game instead of making it smoother.
>>740814838>MM 2ship>MM Recompso which one should i play
>>740814051>green bloodThat's not how I remember it... Is this the German version or something?
>>740813891Conquer's Bad Fur Day is likely the prettiest N64 game. Conquer himself looked like he came from a next-gen game compared to other characters from that time.
>>740815176They already kicked out the original superior fire temple music because the samples were some kind of muslim prayer chant. Replaced it with the wailing women from the shadow temple, which sounds out of place. I've still got my cart with the original luckily. I hope they just record their own voice work with similar-sounding gibberish for the remake, should avoid online melties if so.
>>740816163The early versions of the game had red blood while they changed to green in the later ones.
>>740816163Yeah, it was changed to green in EU and the 1.2 release onward (grey cartridge)It's also green in Oot 3D
>>740816135Recomp is simple and easy, 2S2H has lots of options that you can finetune the experience with, but there are mods to put 2S2H features into Recomp.Either way, you're going to be playing Majora's Mask, so don't overthink it.
>>740816236>mfw I still have a fully uncensored OoT cart with the Fire Temple chants and red Ganon/dorf blood Feels good, man.I hope the remake restores the blood and preserves the darker elements of the game and gets Zelda back on the right track, but I fear it will be even more censored then ever before.
>>740815432its just animation, theres no physics. I think hand animated too or done from video stills, motion capture wasn't there then
>>740816418>>740816558Damn, that's fucked. The blood in those scenes was genuinely shocking to my 8 year old self back then.
>>740816753The rating will be key, it'll probably still be green if the game is E10+ and won't be red unless it's T.
>>740813992nintendos philosophy of gameplay and art direction over tech specs is fully vindicatedthis looks great 28 years later
Is save data backwards compatible in ship of harkinian? I learned the rom I used is censored compared to the 1.0 version.
>>740815312I'm not sure it will be. I'm open to some dungeons having completely different music. I still think both BotW, TotK and Echoes of Wisdom nail "dungeon OST". And it's actually one of the highlights of those games. The way they mapped the OST to each "terminal" and how it grows and how traditionally atmospheric it still is, is really good, as it still makes dungeons feel important and scary like they used to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jOen1zrItEAnd I also have hopes that it's a tasteful orchestration and not just "strings everywhere". My fear is them doing a bang-up job like Mario Kart World. That is an OST that "sounds good" but there's like, ZERO consideration put into ANY of it because the foid they put in charge just kowtowed to her deadline and decided "Let's just do hootenanny!"
>>740817084Yeah, it should be fine, although what all do you need? You can just make the blood red with an in game setting and use a mod to fix the music https://gamebanana.com/sounds/85366
I am the second person to post in this thread.Ahem.Nintendo makes games exclusively for toddlers and the pedophiles that love them.
>>740816981Yeah, and it still works. They have to nail this in particular in the remake. I'm okay with many reinterpretations of other bosses. Some of them honestly looked like crap. But Ganondorf is like the King Gallant moment in Demon's Souls, or Artorias or Gehrman in Bloodborne. That whole fight's aesthetic is what made Nintendo feel the pressure (and buckled IMO) during TP to make a hyperactive 4-phase fight with Ganondorf when that doesn't quite carry the same weight. It's the intensity. The way he yells in an overpowering way, and the way the dangerous orange lighting goes in and out between his attacks that makes it feel like a "battle of worlds" feeling, where it becomes more than just "a dude who is strong."I hope they keep the 23/16 music too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yh1g9B_eBY
>>740817391I just want to rebuild the game using a 1.0 rom while keeping my save data. That's it.
>>740811817uh you clearly played ship of harkinian, not oot
>>740813371I always found OoT extremely ugly, and I regularly play 5th gen on real hardware on a CRT (so the way it was intended). There are some artistic choices that are just questionable and the technical aspect doesn't help, the prerendered backgrounds especially, and even in 240p with natty scanlines look ugly and blurry, lacking detail. A far cry from what games like RE2 or FF8 were doing at the time. Some of the vistas during sunrise or rain look really good and atmospheric, making up for it but then bam, the game hits you with the ugliest, blurriest and most barren prerendered background when you enter a building.
>>740813371>people don't blindly worship my ugly overrated trash ENOUGH
>>740817501You don't belong here chud/glowfag. Just go away.
>>740816968I hope they shoot for T. That's what it deserves.
>>740814995Sorry boomer, but 20fps is a slideshow.
>>740817943The HR foid on Linkedin said this game is aimed at Zelda uncs, unlike BotW, so I'm hoping.
>>74081796130-60 was always the console standard, 20 FPS was terrible even for boomers but the N64 was full of technical terribleness.
>>74081796120fps is completely fine for video games trannychud
Aw the brownoids and engagement farmers are moving in, it looked like the thread was going to be good.
>>740811817still the best one and I say this as a Majora fag who thinks its the most impactful artistic achievement this century as a rumination on death and the entropy of all things.
>>740818091Sounds like something a modern developer would say about their poorly optimized slop.
>>740815176>african tribe rituals, so the sound samples are literally jungle flutes and niggas doing tribal yells,The ocarina of time forest temple or do you mean the majora's mask forest temple?
>>740814413majoras mask is the inward psychological portal fantasy sequel that has to do with mind of the hero moreso than the quest itself. it's equally mythic (and as a style of sequal it has a lot of precedent in other storytelling mediums) just in a way that is less commonly recognized. one has the hero fighting the villain and the other has the hero in a kind of repose thinking about mortality. it's supposed to be a more lilting, melachonic, tense experience as opposed to Oot's big grand one. it's impossible to seperate them for me. theyre one big game. both are diminished without the other.
>>740818501go to around 1:30

Is Master Quest worth it or should I just use a 1.0 rom?
>>740818515Nintendo themselves describe Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask as "Zelda Gaiden" (side-stories). They're the "bonus game" that directly connected to the immediate canon of the game they just shipped between the "main" games, but they were seen as just direct-to-dvd sort of extra games, and IMHO it shows, even if both of them are top-5 Zeldas.
>>740819420Never play Master Quest as a first experience. It's a poopy version of the same content with some really weird moments in it. It feels a bit like a rom-hack.
>>740820368I know not to play it first, I already started the base game, I'm just wondering if it's worth having Master Quest over the unaltered 1.0 version of the game.
>>740813371I think one unappreciated thing was the pseudo-dynamism of Link's animation, leaning into directions, the motion capture (or hand animation?) for climbing and his idle stuff. I dunno if they used inverse kinematics or hand animation, but it's really cool to actually see his footing settle at different heights based on where you stand or slope climb. You wouldn't really see that for most games until Ubisoft literally started touting it as a big feat of engineering in Assassin's Creed.
>>740820485I mean, if you're talking about ship then you just sort of store both together.I like to run randomizer with 1 random master quest dungeon thrown in there.
>>740812559It's significantly less hand-holdy than what followed (WW, TP, SS) but on replays of OoT, I see that it too suffers from the slow text boxes as well. I think it would be pretty hard for them to fuck up an OoT remake with such a strong source material. OoT is the perfect hero's journey, it's simple but well executed and has had no competitor since launch. The franchise also had to kneecap itself constantly, trying not to be too close to OoT because that would feel cheap.I suspect that this will be a 1:1 reskin though
>>740811817>I doubt the remake will capture any of its soul though.water is wet. remakes invariably strips games of every bit of soul and love they had since they're made by poojeets using AI upscaling and not giving a shit at all. you have to be seriously retarded to wish for your favorite games to get remade and ruined
>>740815305>"hey... you look kinda cute...">"nooooooooooooooooooo!"
>>740818262The difference is that N64 games are actually optimized for their low fps which makes it feel much more bearable than a poorly optimized modern game that shoots for 60fps and falls short.
>>740821749What's with this console spawning the most retarded fanboys? You can't "optimize" a poor FPS out of someone's eyes.
>>740816937they changed a number of things in 1.2the design on the mirror shield and other places and the fire temple music being the most obvious
>>740816753>I hope the remake restores the blood and preserves the darker elements of the game and gets Zelda back on the right track, but I fear it will be even more censored then ever before.I can already guarantee you, there is no way Nintendo ships one of their primary IP with any blood in it, ever.Unless they're based but I really don't think Nintendo is based.
>>740821749So Goldeneye was optimized for 10fps unless you were looking at the floor, right?
I think something else you have to think about with OoT is how generally good the pacing is. You're never just doing something for too long, the game progresses at a very appropriate pace so you get to enjoy whatever the next scene or dungeon is.>Dungeons are elaborate but not overly so>The player is encouraged to make use of all of their equipment>Upgrades are scattered around for people who explore and talk to NPCs>All of this in a 3D space, which for the time, was also quite an ordeal to make engaging dungeon design for the N64>Combat is simple but it works and feel cool, which was later built upon in WW and TP>Excellent presentation and atmosphere both before and after time traveling, graphics, music, characters, all of it fits extremely well>The progression feels appropriately adventurous and satisfying, you're always getting new gear>Game never goes on for too long and knows when to end>Includes a fast travel system with the ocarina if you ever need to leave the dungeon>Navi functions as a backseat system for people who meander too long and forget what they were supposed to be doingIn terms of game design and just making a fucking thing that's fun to play, works, and is charming, they nailed it pretty goddamn well. It's not simply just nostalgia, because I played it way, way after it came out. It's just excellently designed so of course people are going to be talking about it for years on end. Every time I think about it, I realize another thing that makes it so good.
>>740818091This. It wasn't until well into my 30's that someone had to inform me OOT didn't even run at 30 FPS. You don't notice when playing it.
>>740822632>generally good the pacing isImagine saying this in a game with gerudo fortress and navi and other handholding npcs constantly interrupting you.
>>740823035>navioverforced meme. try again, troon
>>740824223OoT basically pioneered obnoxious Focus, L chatterbox characters constantly interrupting gameplay and following you everywhere, this is a simple statement of fact and not a meme.
>>740811817Dark souls 1 surpassed OoT and is more influential.
>>740823035Gerudo Fortress is a mini-dungeon. And you generally don't get interrupted on shit besides the rare Navi bits the further you get in.
Ocarina of Time is legitimately one of the best coming-of-age stories in any medium ever. It's timeless in the same way that classic fairytales that have been handed down for hundreds of years are timeless. It has layers of depth that very few games ever get close to. I hope Nintendo is aware of the genuine artistic merits it has and doesn't change too much, but the first teaser already left a horrible taste in my mouth.
>>740819420Master Quest is a really bad romhack and it's not really worth playing in general.
>>740814995>"inb4 just lower the res and it looks good nice cope durrr">doesn't actually explain why that's a bad ideaWut
>>740813371Fighting a mess of dark barf colored polygons trying to resemble a pig that looks nothing like a pig isn't amazing. Just another thing people make excuses for because they defend mediocrity like OoT because it's Nintendo first party. Ganon looks awful. You can find the exact shit in the final tower in the starting monastery in Quest 64 but when Quest does it people really don't care. OoT has been a giant grift from the beginning. Goemon came out before it and Gorgeous Musical Castle is styled and looks better than anything in OoT.
>>740825756anon that was him anticipating some retard trying to make fun of him for saying to play on a lower res
>>740822632The only knock I have against pacing in OoT is that around the time you're doing Shadow and Spirit temple the game starts to feel a bit like you're going through the motions, when it's just "get the next medallion."I think macguffins are important to Zelda, even if they're just objectively lazy storytelling methods, but what works so well in the first part of the game is that you have 3 different "sides" of Link forming family and bonds that creates a context for Hyrule, in between the open world stuff where you potentially meet Malon and Epona... and then AFTER that part, there's the big shift in gears, and then half of the Adult part is revisiting those areas in this new perspective, and the last 2 dungeons is about moving on to places related to Death and Rebirth. Like the first 6 dungeons in the game represents Link's "life" and then the last ones and Ganon represents a more omnipresent, "forces of nature" kind of gravitas.but I always feel that when you get to Shadow Temple the world starts to feel a little empty, a little too early in the game, and they really could've done more with areas like Lake Hylia and Gerudo Fortress, in the story-department.And it's such a little criticism of its pacing because it's just 2 dungeons when you're already in a groove, and then the story really gains momentum into the finale once you go back to the Temple of Time.
>>740823035Navi says "Hey!" a lot. She doesn't actually halt the gameplay often.
>>740828369it would help if before shadow there was some quest about helping kakariko and then going to the shadow temple to finish the job. it's too emotionally detached as an area, and it basically wasn't affected by ganon's takeover
