If it's not for you, play the remakes. If you can handle it, I recommend actually playing gen 1 and gen2, maybe having a buddy play the other version with you, and definitely try to incorporate the Stadium games if you have the hardware or care to.

Not everything new has to be a Gible, but no kid ever had fun using a Ledyba or Aipom. There's a reason Mareep and Wooper were on every team: they were good and easy to find new mons.On the other hand, level curve is something Johto is mostly built around. Everything evolves at low levels, and the late game is easy enough that even babies that don't evolve until the 30s can handle it. I actually think low level curve restricts team building in RS and BW far more.Gen II rides a lot on the magic of discovery, and that works well when you're young and fresh off Gen I. That's also the target demographic, so mission accomplished. I just don't think there's much to work with beyond that element
