Do you guys ever think steam will let us buy sell and trade games instead of just renting licenses?
>>
i hope not
>>
>>740900737
No, that's one thing that the EU cucked us out of
>>
>>740900737
No, also in case you didn't realize: the modern world doesn't want us to ""own"" shit. That's why physical media is dying.

Why would any company in the world want to sell a physical game, just for that person to rent it to a friend and later on sell it on ebay? So 3 people played the game and only 1 person paid the company.

Valve aren't the good guys, the only reason why they implemented the refund function, was because of pressure by consumer law. But to be fair, there are some DRM free games on Steam, so you can just drag n drop the folder and back it up, share it and do whatever you want with it.
>>
>>740900737
I don't like the idea of not owning your games like a normal possession you can do with what you please, but /v/ is not going like the next thing I say. Not being able to trade games reduces the price floor for new games. The physical system was effectively people buying new games subsidizing people who bought used.

So for example, let's say a game new is $60 and used it's $20, and everyone is making a profit and not bankrupting themselves, and they can't raise the price because of industry competition, and they can't lower the price because they would no longer be generating a good enough profit. In a microscopic scenario, one person buys the game new and one person buys that same copy used after the fact. That's only $60 put back into the system, and the new buyer only gets a little money back when they resell the game. Not as much money as they would've saved buying it used.

But what we could also do is make that game digital, charge $30 with the expectation that the used buyer will purchase the game retail at lower prices than new physical, but higher prices than used physical. If these two people buy the game in this case, that's still $60 back in the system except the original buyer got a lower price.

However that's only the price floor, and it's only one of many price floors. Whether you see low prices is determined by existing competition. But the consequences of digital games is one of the reasons they haven't gone up with inflation.

I could already sell my account if I really gave a shit.

>Valve aren't the good guys, the only reason why they implemented the refund function, was because of pressure by consumer law.

This could be true but my pure vibe take is that refund systems increase profitability because customers will spend more knowing they can potentially return the item. If you can't return something you are going to be extremely reticent to buy it. "all sales are final" only works in frenzied environments like auctions. Anyone doing no refunds in retail is just laying in their own bucket of crabs.
>>
If they do, a lot of kids will get scammed out of their games and customer service will have to deal with it somehow. The costs of these cases will raise prices.
>>
If you could sell your steam games then the sales would fucking plummet for every game. You would have an entire secondary market of people reselling the game back and forth to each other and effectively turn 60$ into infinite games so long as you can keep reselling. Steam actually had this happen with the family sharing feature for a long time but thirdies abused the fuck out of it by having an entire underground sharing scheme where a half dozen guys would share their libraries with each other.
>>
>>740902209
We already have active test trials of game ownership via Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony, and this isn't an issue at all.

For eshop digital games?
>>
>>740900737
Wasn't it a law proposed in EU long time ago?

Can't imagine shit like this ever being enforced. It would ruin economies that rely on services
>>
>>740902771
No for physical games.
>>
>>740900737
Just add an option to rent a game for a fraction of the original price
>>
>>740903170
A physical product needs to be physically transfered. A digital only game is only limited by upload/download speeds. If this kind of thing were to be implemented it would be abused like a motherfucker since the second you finish a game you could instantly resell it and the other guy would get a fresh copy from the servers.

Even if you had the best intentions there is no way you could implement this kind of system without thirdies abusing it or valve limiting it with something like a resell fee (which thirdies would bitch about endlessly).
>>
>>740903941
I guess I'll stick with consoles then.
>>
>>740904783
Do consolefags even resell beyond trading a game into game stop for .99$ worth of in store credit per game?
>>
>>740900737
yes, they will get raped by EU,it will just take time, maybe even 10 years more
>>
Okay lets say this happens. How does Valve ensure you actually resold the game? What is preventing you from just buying a game, beating it, and then moving the files to a different hard drive steam cant detect and resell it? Because irl I would have physically given the game away and therefore could not play it. Sounds like a recipe for devs to invent new ways to rape your PC with drm or steam becoming crazy intrusive.
>>
>>740900737
seems like a good way to bring back that weird online pass bullshit that was a thing on xbone, or have devs cut up games into a bunch of DLCs so that even if you technically buy a game from the used market you still need to buy DLC.
meanwhile all the gacha/live service shit would not have to worry about any of this
bad end
>>
>>740900737
Publishers don't want to give up the beautiful control they have right now it would be a all out war vs Valve if they tried it. A big issue I see is people selling singleplayer games after they beat it. They put it up on the marketplace for under the "new" copy price just to get something back. Why would anyone buy a "new" copy? You just have to wait a week for the "used" copies to start filling up the marketplace.

In the physical world "new" actually means something and it's nice to own something brand new but digital lacks that factor and every copy is identical.
>>
Publishers would demand a cut, Steam would take a cut, the government would tax it and you'd be left with 2 dollars on a 60 dollar resale. Either that or big names stop putting their games on steam
>>
>>740905502
Ive bought second hand games all the time. Do PC vegans not know what gamestop is?
>>
>>740900737
I thought you could already do that through stream codes.

>replying to a post without reading it
>>
>>740906536
this
in the end it wouldn't be worth selling
>>
>>740900737
Resell a fucking digital product? Fuck that, just torrent it. Set up Goldberg and you're free to play basically anything.
>>
>>740900737
this is exactly the kind of thing blockchain technology would be able to accomplish easily, but of course gamers were psyopped into thinking NFTs are evil. licenses could be stored on a decentralized public ledger allowing you to transfer games between various launchers, or resell them, creating something much closer to actual ownership of digital goods.
valve isn't going to just implement this kind of thing, though. there would have to be significant public demand and most people are in love with valve as some kind of benevolent monopoly
>>
>>740907418
I think this is the first time NFTs could be used in a beneficial way for anyone that isnt a scammer. No clue how valve would be able to get publishers to cooperate tho.
>>
>>740900737
It would take a genius to come up with a system that pleases everyone. Gamers would get shafted in the deal but since we currently receive nothing for our games I guess something is better than nothing.

If I was Gabe I'd be working on this problem and make it happen. Steam would cement it self as the best store and Valve would get a lot of goodwill.
>>
>>740900737
Steam Marketplace was an attempt at making this possible. Publishers that opposed it retaliated by creating Origin, Uplay, and Rockstar launcher.

"owning" a sequences of 1s and 0s that can be infinitely copied doesn't make any sense, no matter how brainwashed by kikes you are.

The EU parliament did actually bring this up as a future possibility during the Stop Killing Games hearings and all that. Then a neo-nazi from Slovak tried to bitch about woke when he had the podium.

>let's make everything worse so some poorfag can save five bucks on his next FIFA purchase
Yeah nah I'm good.
>>
>>740900737
There's got to be some cryptographic horseshit you can pull where people can only access games that they pay for while actually owning them and not having to deal with it being locked-down by DRM niggatry.
>>
>>740906842
Are you retarded? Of course people buy sell and trade games. It's an entire fucking market (that you don't have because you don't own your games)
>>
>>740909020
My post acknowledged the resell for in store credit, I was being hyperbolic because GS would rip you off on resell value. Also the games that were being resold were still like 20$ for some liscensed shovelware. I traded in a couple games once (liscensed shovelware I barely played lol) and got jack shit in credit and never bothered again.
>>
>>740900737
they tried that with artifact and people hated it
>>
>>740907967
This is the reality alongside the analog paradox. Idk why normalfags are stunned that the digital world isn't the same as the physical
>>
Bump
>>
>>740900737
Breh just keep copies of all the games you buy, and use any of the myriad of tools available on github to strip steam from them so you can enjoy them offline. It's not rocket science.
>>
Life is expensive, may as well not pay for some shitty games. It's the least you could do.
>>
>>740900737
Nobody would buy games second-hand when they can just get it for free through piracy. It will never work on a platform with as much freedom as PC.

The only way this would work is through draconian levels of console DRM. Which is ironically giving up your ownership of games just to have at best a permission to play key. No real access to the files themselves or ability to backup.
>>
>>740900737
Publishers would lose their minds if people could sell their game's digital license without them getting the lions share of the transaction, and even still they'd probably limit how low you could resell it for, otherwise it'd absolutely crater sales for full priced $70 shit (more than those games are already suffering) with people finishing them and then dumping them for half off on the market just to recuperate whatever they can.
>>
>>740909020
>pay 60-70 dollars to get a permission to play license
>I get no access to the files themselves to backup or modify
>console manufacturer has the ability to revoke them at any time
>gigarape levels of drm on every disc or cartridge
>this is considered game ownership
Even EGS is better than this lmao.

it's called g2a.com
>but
it's what you asked
>>
>>740900737
No.
Software copyright turning "physical" software into a scarce commodity that is still somehow just them selling you only the license was baked into the laws they drafted in the 80s. There is nothing to own, it's just a meme. The source code is valuable, but even the companies making software lose that shit.
>sell and trade
This is always going to be LARPing and the response will always be "wait for a sale or pirate", even from people selling you games, because there is no value being generated for anyone in this transaction other than Indians and adjacent scammers.
>>740900872
Nope, you did this shit to yourselves, blame CONTU.
>>740901129
You don't own anything with physical media. Shrinkwrap licenses popped up within just a few years of software copyright and they still haven't really gone away even with the court ruling.
>>
>>740900737

Only if EU forces them to.
Gabe Newell hates consumer rights more than anything.

Imagine if you bought the latest $80 6 hour AAA garbage, finished it, decided you never want to play it again and could sell your "used copy" on the steam marketplace.
New game sales would drop by an order of magnitude and the whole industry would collapse.
