Fallout 3 had a better atmosphere, better story with a bigger scope. I prefer the characters and dialogue too. New Vegas doesn’t have the same random encounters that 3 does. I never fast travel in fallout 3 because there’s random encounters all the time. Meanwhile in new Vegas no fast travel is pretty boring. If Bethesda didn’t fuck over the new Vegas devs I think it would have been a lot better. Still good but I think fallout 3 is much better. Darker more grim atmosphere is the biggest thing to me.

Its just more that the game naturally drives you to new vegas and the game doesn't really have a lot of need to back-track so the only time you go backwards is usually just skipping to a safe house. What I really liked in 3 about the overworld encounters is that after the enclave shows up it refreshes and puts enclave and higher level enemies down, so wandering around in the second half of the game has new stuff. Really wish that had carried that into skyrim where the best you get is the town guards changing uniforms.

There are some great perks for changing up how combat plays out. Casino minigames improve any game. Raiders are more fleshed out, having their own factions that can be dealt with in different ways. Dead Money and Lonesome Road had fantastic atmosphere, despite their flaws. And this is just personal taste but I think NV has a way better soundtrack

The quests presented here are either oversimplifying them, or quests that point the player to other quest locations like Red Rock Canyon, and the Old Mormon Fort.

When I beat it I ran downstairs to tell my parents about how amazing it was and they pretended to care, it was legitimately a life changing experience for me at the time. When New Vegas got revealed at E3 back in the day, I remember being hyped at first but then finding out it was made by some losers called Obsidian and thought it would be shit. I played it for a few hours on release on my PS3 (lol) and it was a buggy mess with nonstop dialogue, barely any combat and an empty desert map, so I dropped it quickly and waited for Skyrim. Then I played Skyrim, after being older and playing a lot of other RPGs, and found it lacking. It was really good at first, but by the time I had spent over 100 hours, I noticed I wasn't really having fun, I was just walking around, one shotting everything with my maxed out daedric armor and sword, and just looting random shit to sell, even though I already had infinite money. Then I realized that there had been no meaningful choices the whole game outside the civil war. I was the leader of all the major guilds, friend to all the Jarls, an expert in all fighting styles, and everyone basically loved me. I never beat Skyrim and stopped playing RPGs for a while. Eventually, I got a PC and tried Fallout NV again since FO4 was about to come out and I wanted to give it another shot. The first mission, which I completely skipped my first time around, had me choose whether to side with Goodsprings or the Powder Gangers and there was actual consequences and rewards for choosing either that would continue for the rest of the game. The tutorial quest of the game had more depth than all of Skyrim. Naturally, it become one of my favorite games of all time, and FO3 which I had on a pedestal was no only dethroned but discarded due to NV mogging it so hard in pretty much every aspect but the world design (DC is still funner to explore than the Mojave imo).
