In general, 3 fixed almost all my complaints I had with 2.

In 1 all the systems fit together perfectly and don't distract you too much from the main game (story, map exploration and combat), which is impressive for a game that throws vastly different shit at you and just expects you to accept it and understand.
As of chapter 4 in the second game a lot of stuff just feels messy. Blades, pouches, field skills, merc missions and even side quest tracking just waste so much time because you're constantly fiddling in slow menus. The combat for the first dozen hours is really sluggish and feels clumsy. Though that's been getting better as the game goes on.

Literally no one cares but I just finished Xenoblade Chronicles 1 like a week ago (wii version) and I haven't played any other Xeno games.
And here's my review!

Xenoblade Chronicles is proof that if you do enough right in terms of story and worldbuilding that, even if the actual mechanics and gameplay of your experience are flawed, you'll still have a highly enjoyable game at the end of the day.

Xenoblade Chronicles uses an extremely unique premise and world. Having your entire existence be on one of these two unfathomably large humanoid beings who are currently in stasis but could wake up at any moment is not only something wholly unique, but also just awesome and cool, I don't really know any other way to describe it.

Having this as the premise also allows for a really cool sense of progression, where you start at the ankles of one of these titans and slowly make your way up to the top, and then begin to explore the body of the other as the game progresses. It's taking one of my favorite "you are inside the body of a massive being" trope to a level I have never seen before, and it's my favorite thing about this game. It also helps create dramatic tension when these titans DO start moving, you know some serious shit is happening. The final few hours of this game are absolute insanity.

Everything else leading up to those final few hours is pretty good too, I won't say it's masterclass or anything, but for being a 50 hour long JRPG, it manages to not really make any of it's segments feel like filler, (aside from maayybe the stuff with Melia's succession to the throne) you're always working towards some goal that feels meaningful and stuff is pretty much consistently happening to move the larger plot forward, which constantly kept me invested. Of course, I wouldn't largely care about most of this, if it weren't for the characters, and while I wouldn't say that there is any character in this game that I absolutely adore, they're all generally likeable and get decent amounts of writing and backstory. With only Riki feeling like he was left out of getting more development, which is a shame, since he was one of my main party members.

However, with all that said, you maybe noticed I haven't said much about the actual gameplay yet. That's because this is where the game mostly falls short for me. The combat isn't so boring that I'm falling asleep, but once you've gotten about 5 hours in and have unlocked futuresight, that's pretty much what you'll be doing until the end of the game, with minor adjustments for party members. This is a problem shared by a lot of JRPGs, but for some reason when it comes to action games, I feel fatigued from that a lot more quickly than I would for something that's turn based. Additionally; look, I get it, the Bionis and Mechonis are huge, and I'm probably meant to feel small on these titans bodies, but holy shit man it takes forever to get anywhere new in this game because you have to walk around on foot. Just let Shulk glide around on the Monado like a hoverboard, give me a sprint button or something to move around these gigantic environments a little bit faster, please.

It may not seem like that big of an issue, but it builds up over the course of the playtime when you're having to walk through 2-3 minutes of nothing to get anywhere to do anything, especially in the Mechonis segments.

If Xenoblade Chronicles had a bit more engaging combat system, I could easily see it being one of my favorite games of all time, but as it stands, it's simply a great game that requires a bit of patience to get through, but I am still glad that I managed to air slash, slit edge, and back slash all the way to the end.

I really have a hard time placing 2 and 3. I can't see myself ever doing a completely fresh run of 2 like I could 3 because I really didn't like Blade Gacha(so NG+ only) but the latter also doesn't have the highs of the former. The music of 2 is probably also the best in the series. 1 being that high is purely down to nostalgia but I truly think they are my favorite cast of the series even if they aren't as fleshed out. I felt a twinge of something emotional in Melia's hero quest in 3 because I love the original cast so much (but also hearing the Shulk/Fiora song was funny).
