What compels the Marathon player to keep playing?
>>740912860What compels the junkie to keep getting high?
>>740912860Same argument you can find on literally any corner of the web. Small fanbase enjoys the niche genre and enjoys the loop and wants to keep playing. Marathon as a game would not be a giant issue if it was like from an indie company that didn't throw 0.25 billion at it, Bungie wasn't sunsetting destiny, and it Bungie wasn't releasing a live service game after the Concord Highguard failures. But then again, if my grandmother had handlebars, wheels, and a saddle, she'd be a bike.

>go in>kill people with lesser gear>rinse and repeatIt's fun. When it's all watered down and balanced then I'll probably uninstall but it's worth it to hear people complain when they're downed from half the map away.
>>740914136A decade doing jack shit except maintain a live service game that pretty much missed every single content deadline tend to decimate a studio's potential. All the devs that remain at bungie are either absolute dreg, desperate or autistically loyal to the studio. So it's fairly obvious that when those people were asked to make a full fledged game from scratch, it would be a disaster.
>You are just a soul>You upload your soul into a shell>Maybe you're a masculine destroyer>Maybe you're a femme thief>You can be whatever the coporation allows to maximize profit and extract resources from the planet. Marathon faggots can't quit it because it appeals to their tranny lifestyle.
>>740913846It was my personal opinions on the question.I think a large percentage of the playerbase likes running trios, maybe? It's basically Apex legends with more hazards and PvE.

>>740914056I don't even know what Bungie is going to do at this point.
>>740914498>MGS2Seems right up your alley then.
>>740914639Ideally, they focus back on Destiny and treat Marathon like a side hobby. ORBurn themselves trying to turn an extraction shooter into Destiny. Piss off their core Marathon fan base. Piss off the Destiny players further. Layoff employees until 2027. Shutdown the whole studio in February. Sony adds Destiny and Marathon to their IP refrigerator next to Bloodborne and Jak&Daxter.
>>740914986Why didn't you play it during the free week?It mogs destiny. Destiny 2 isn't even a good game.
>>740914468I can see some truth in that. But, the devs nailed their vision with Marathon. Maps like Cyro and Outpost nail the exact vibe they're going for. When you have the boys on discord, it can feel like you're executing a heist. It is the strongest 6/10 game I've ever played and I got it for free last season. I'm sure the execs loved it on paper and imagined it making a boat load. >We're going to sell a PVP treadmill>This PVP treadmill regulates itself >The unemployed chads with hundreds of hours will take the loot of the employed casuals.>They will stream and demonstrate how much fun the game can be and bring in more casuals>Players will amass loot which they will lose and have to play more in a neverending cycle>Encase players are too scared to use their loot and to prevent inflation, we will do quarterly wipes>Everyone loses their loot and start the climb again.>Unlike Destiny, we wont have to balance for a gun that came in year 1 during year 8. >We can sunset anything at will.IN REALITY>Chad kills the casual player>Casual player loses their good gear>QuitsWhat if the casual is good?>Casual has lots of loot but no friends>Plays Crew Fill>Gets 2 friendless retards>Matchmaking doesn't care if you're 3 solos crew filling or a premade>The playerbase is probably to small to do so>Maybe they exfil with good success>The addiction is setting in>What's next?>Cyro ArchiveYou literally cannot progress in Cyro Archive without a dedicated team. I'd challenge anyone to start fresh and make it to Compiler using crew fill only. No repeat teams either. Pure teammate RNG. Unless you're a pro gamer that can win multiple 1v3's, you are not solving more than 3 vaults by the season's wipe. I challenge anyone to that. By that point, the casual will realize they can only ever be a loot pinata and quit. The best thing a casual can do in Marathon is quit.

>>740912860Cryo is fun, there's a constant 10 decisions to make on what to do or where to go based on: immediate local feedback (footsteps, bot sounds, gunfights),medium term (held keys, meta knowledge of other teams progress, sec level, have/found gear etc) long term (gotta do x vault, have X quest, gotta kill all other teams).and the game is fast enough that these are constantly in flux.At any point there's a depth of unknown/changing state and time pressure and conflicting goals, I cant think of another shooter game that combines all these as well as Marathon does.and most people never even make it to this point of play because they die immediately to someone like me and quit, there's no way for them to learn without applying themselves.anyway that's why I will play it until it peters out and then be chasing the dragon forever probably.
>>740912860Stockholm Syndrome.
>>740912860I like it because it feels immersive. When I play solo, it really feels like I'm dropping into a hostile world as a merc with no human rights that's treated as expendable garbage. Everything in the game hates you; the UESC, the various factions, Durandal's subroutines, the planet itself, the mechanics of the game, other players, your own team mates sometimes if you do play trios. It's a game routed in the idea that to experience it you're going to have to suffer and experience set back after set back. Season wipes are you just getting your memory wiped and taxxed to shit by the corp that owns your soul. Gear you get you rarely get to hold onto for long. Gunfights start and end in the blink of an eye because of the quick kill time. It's an intentionally crafted torture chamber for the mentally weak, and to enjoy it you have to be able to withstand failure after failure after failure.Growing immune to the failure, accompanied with the codex entries hinting at the idea of Runners becoming sharpened blades against a whetstone, perfectly honed into killing machines from exposure to constant violence, just feels exciting and real. Maybe it's chuuni and lame to people but I feel it. I'm a better player now with all the times I've died. I've killed people in ways I wouldn't be able to fathom in my first 100 hours, and I've capitalised on the smallest of mistakes that others make that propels me into success. Feeling that evolution and directly seeing the results is satisfying. It feels like I'm playing a different game with all the shiny shit I have in comparision to the muck and garbage people can scrape together. Taking all of that shiny gear and unwravelling the mysteries of the game by hunting down the codex entries is a good feeling I haven't felt in other games. Also the aesthetics of the game kick ass, so that's a plus.
>>740912860All the people I know who play marathon often play deadlock 3x as much and rainbow six
>>740915892>Neither are healthy>I received it a copy for free at launch to reviewI just think Marathon players will be happier if Marathon isn't Bungie's main focus. They're going to lobotimize the extraction shooter elements to cast a larger net. They already added a PvE mode when Rook was meant to be the game's recovery mechanic. But good Rooks could wipe a team so they had to nerf Rooks. That shorty shotgun was too good. I'd bet when the next endgame raid map comes out. There will be PvE Cyro to try and win some of the Destiny crowd. Compiler is already designed like a dungeon boss fight. PvE modes will enable powercreep and no one will be rocking blues and below. If it stays a side hobby, they can keep it being a PvP game with a dedicated but small fan base. But, would Sony allow that? I doubt it.Bungie is just fucked. Sony paid 3.63 billion and want that money NOW. I'm sure guerilla games is happy. Horizon Fortnite has no pressure now. If they fail, they can point to Bungie- the masters of live service and their failure with Marathon and say "Well, they didn't do much better."
>>740913185Found this pic of your grandma bro, you should probably tell her to take that shit down
>>740914468In all fairness this is because of the decision to go for an extraction shooter and not pick a realistic setting for it. Hell they didn't even pick a standard sci-fi one but instead went with some weird ass 3d-printer pre-launch prototype car paint design on fucking everything. The 2nd main thing is the lack of content. How the fuck are you gonna penetrate the live service games market, where the major competitors have already amassed a lot of content over time and are already on their 20th season or something, by launching a f2p model game for FORTY fucking bucks without a single player campaign, with only 3 fucking maps and less than 10 character classes. Oh and the endgame map mode is specifically designed to filter anyone by the top tier skilled players. Wow great idea bungo.Further more even after the initial flop, the retards still don't understand the reason for it. What do they do with season 2? Just a rehash of a previous map, only now its more shit because its night time only and you cant see shit anymore.Oh and keep in mind that these already dire steamchart numbers are gonna plummet down to the double digits once summer vacations are over after July and all the kids leave and you can already imagine what happens once GTA6 comes out.
>>740914136Probably by consistently shitting all over one of the most psychotically loyal fanbases in all of gaming as if having a dedicated following that big and that strong isn't something most devs would kill for. They had the lowest bar ever with Destiny tards essentially telling Bungie "just give me the bare minimum and I'll be happy bro please I'm begging you just the absolute bare minimum is all I want from you" and Bungie basically said "best I can do is spit in your face and kick your dog"

>>740918756I'd argue they didn't go alien enough for a new planet. Dire Marsh had weird anomalous walls just to block vision. If it dies it dies because AAA game dev and tech as a whole are a complete shit show.It depends on how much of a shitshow it will be post sony lay offs. Upside of a PVP game is that less content can go a lot further because the challenge is mostly from the players (see counter strike players playing the same maps for almost 20 years). >>740923315There seems to be a degree of spite with Bungie and Sony concerning Destiny 2. Like they're actually mad that the player base would rather continue playing Destiny than move over to Marathon like they wanted. It's surreal.
>>740938049They don't even have "cutscenes", and those are just a looping animation with some dialogue. Supreme laziness.
>>740938572It's an extraction game, not a team deathmatch. Big maps are a necessity for the genere in the first place. Still doesn't excuse that there is only 4 of them despite the time and money that were poured into this or the number of developers that worked on it.
>>740938657Or instead of anything like that, it's very much a monetary decision. Continuing to create enough content for something like D2 likely wouldn't have been possible while keeping it profitable in terms of all dev costs (Destiny had never turned significant profit in the fiscal quarters after Sony's purchase of Bungie), so the company is forced to downsize and shifts gears to a game that is cheaper to maintain and develop for a studio their size. The growth with D2 had long since stopped regardless of the quality of the game, largely because f2p accounted for the intense number of players flooding into the game and practically the only thing that made profit was the MTX, so what you had was a constantly ballooning studio built around a single decade old game that already had done more than enough to burn bridges with those players as well. So how does a development studio move forward from that? They downshift, lay off staff and attempt to cultivate what they can. If Bungie becomes some full Sony subsidiary at some point is anyone's guess, but in terms of unique Sony live service IP's, Marathon is the only one that hasn't imploded straight in the crib. The best of both worlds is that Bungie really does turn into the indie size studio it's always memed to be and works on the projects they want to work on. Destiny, Halo and the large amount of blubber attached to the studio will peel off and they'll go more niche.

>>740940639Personally, it was because there is/was such a push to defend this game from journalists and shills. Also I really dislike the live service push. If the AAA industry wants to make slop, at lest they could make slop that don't force their players on a constant treadmill of time waste and microtransactions.
>>740940634>anon describes a basic ass extraction shooterNot him but you can get that experience unless you speak Russian and play Tarkov. And even then it's more of a PUBG theme park these days.
>>740940892>B...but burntpeanut shilled for us! he said the game was better than arc raiders!
>>740921016Yall acting like these numbers wont go back down to the same amount as Marathon after a week or so. Just look at the chart.
>>740940892that is so funny, arc raiders lost 95% of its players, lost all the big streamers, announced they were going into maintenance mode and marathon STILL couldnt beat its player counts or twitch viewers. i remember the shills saying marathon was going to kill arc raiders.
>>740940892It's not even fun to play, why would it be fun to watch?
>>740940920What time waste? what microtransactions? its a buy to play product where 90% of the playerbase load in every match with the free loadouts and play it like a roguelite.
>>740912860What were they thinking with the tranny art style
>>740941087>What time waste?Gear gathering for cryo archive, which you can lose at a moment's notice throught normal gameplay?>what microtransactions? The lux and the skins?
>>740941139/pol/yps will look at you straight in the eye, call Synthetik trans, then refuse being called schizophrenic
>>740917894They aren't, which is why the price keeps going up.
>>740941410It's a pretty grave insult to compare synthetik's artstyle to this trashfire.
>>740941031Even if the numbers crash they still peaked much higher. Which means it has much more earning potential even if it is only in short bursts before everyone leaves again.

>>740941746>may be the first ever sub 10k peak day.Did that already happen near the end of season 1?
>>740916924>>Matchmaking doesn't care if you're 3 solos crew filling or a premadeYikes

>>740918502I get this exact experience from modded STALKER and don't have to deal with a shit aesthetic or GaaSlop garbage.
>>740920969>a week into season 2 and almost back down to end of season 1 numbers Yep, it's over.
>>740941923The cool aesthetic is the only reason to play it
>>740928090>77% Uh oh, they better go start begging on discord again
>>740940892Extraction shooters are just not that watchable. It's one of those games that I'd rather go play myself.>>740941079Games that aren't fun to play can absolutely be fun to watch. Depends on the streamer.
>>740941393Cryo is a time limited thing only a few hundred people care about and the skins are mostly earned by playing with a certain factions free kit or getting for free using points you gain by levelling up called silk. lux is just for whales that want to skip the playing the game and buy shit directly but thats ugly cash shop shit that makes you visible from half the map away. The game runs on dead by daylight rules. Did you get the basic bitch skin for using this free kit? great thats active camo for X map.
>>740942250>cool aestheticDifferent strokes for different folks, I think it looks atrocious.
>>740916924>I got it for freeHow?
>>740938050>77FThat's April weather in Canada
>>740942558It's a marketer
>>740918756>The 2nd main thing is the lack of content. How the fuck are you gonna penetrate the live service games market, where the major competitors have already amassed a lot of content over time and are already on their 20th season or something, by launching a f2p model game for FORTY fucking bucks without a single player campaign, with only 3 fucking maps and less than 10 character classes.Excellent point.
>>740919758>I checked out when they removed drugs and dead bodies. Why TF would they do that?
>>740912860Sunk cost fallacyalarmingly common these days when people are too proud to admit they made a bad choice
>>740941534That's not what's being said. That's an old message from before Cryo Archive was turned off due to this issue. It's still not back.
>>740942886>Everyone who liked games I don't like is suffering from sunken cost fallacy
>>740942482>only a few hundred people care aboutWell, with that steam player count I don't doubt that the number is somewhat accurate but what's the point of locking what's essentially 25% of your game to a minority hardcore playerbase? And if it's not an objective for most people, what's the motivation for even playing this game? If it's just endless shooty killkill with wipes every few months, how is that not a treadmill by itself?>thats ugly cash shop shitSo, you do agree that it's microtransactions. Ugly or not ugly, doesn't really change the reality of what it is.
The game is ugly. In a niche genre. It has a bad economic model. No content. It's a miracle Sony hasn't moved every dev onto another project and put the game on life support as is.
>>740943241>what's the point of locking what's essentially 25% of your game to a minority hardcore playerbase? What do you mean? Who is being locked out of Cryo Archive, and how?>And if it's not an objective for most people, what's the motivation for even playing this game?Well, last season had priority contracts. But they are the same this season, so people who played season 1 have no incentive to do them outside of faction XP.
>>740943241The thing is theres a massive misconception by both the devs and the public who havent tried it about what the appeal is. People go "but cryo is locked behind XYZ" and its not. People just don't care. Marathon was expected to be destiny patrol zones with gambit invaders but in execution its a lot more like halo reach and metal gear online thrown in a blender. Its majority appeal is not the close quarter esports sloppa the director desperately wanted at all. Its people using the free kits to play the game as a roguelike. Because going in with nothing makes everything you leave with feel more rewarding and then you funnel that into the cradle to increase your seasonal stats so now your free kit also has more melee damage or faster heals to make your runs better. The thing is thats a userbase that likes everything but cryo. The big open maps with bases, tunnels and points of interest on an alien planet. Cryo on the other hand is an enclosed very samey looking collection of hangers and corridors that feels like a bunch of destiny pvp maps stitched together and it just lacks that same vibe.Case in point theres this wall running through the beginner map with open sections on the scafolding you can use to cut through and in one end theres a human in a ruptured hazmat suit stuck halfway up the wall buried in fungus growing out of her mouth. its a level of "what happened here?" shit you notice on a big open map with lots of nooks and crannies. In cryo its esports sickos constantly on the move paranoid about being double teamed by two other equally twitchy/sweaty teams of paranoid players all with the specific mindset of "i came in with all my best shit, if i wipe its not just a loss i'm worse than when i came in". Which is a totally different appeal.Personally i enjoy the other maps solo where i'm playing it as a stealth game. What was that noise? what direction? do i risk making noise for the reward? different audiences entirely.
>>740918502>It's a game routed in the idea that to experience it you're going to have to suffer and experience set back after set back. What part of this sounds appealing to a working adult that plays video games to unwind?
>>740943830>Cryo on the other hand is an enclosed very samey looking collection of hangers and corridors that feels like a bunch of destiny pvp maps stitched together and it just lacks that same vibe.I do like the vibe of Cryo Archive a lot, but once you realize its structure, it feels very cramped despite its size.
>>740944095Why should it have to?
>>740944132Its bad design for a different esports focussed game. Kill boxes for things like grenades and ironically linear lines of sight. Compare to all the other maps where that clutter allows shit like "i was crouched on one of those super thick cables because dumbass players simply don't look up" and sneaking about is more fun because shots can come from damn near any direction near a building and out in the wilderness theres huge areas of little cover and you gotta be ready to boost or slide or grapple or whatever at a moments notice risking overheating. Its very loosely the regular halo pvp maps versus big team battle and most prefer the horseshit of big team battle.
>>740943528>Who is being locked out of Cryo Archive, and how?solo players are being locked out of cryo archive by not being able to play the end game content as a solo.
>>740944691Oh, yeah, fair. Solo Cryo would require some changes, but duos Cryo would be great.
Perimiter, Darsh and Outpost are made for people that like Halo and Metal Gear, Cryo is made for people who like Rainbow Six Siege. We are not the same.
>>740944246see>>740941594
>>740944132>>740944550Cryo archive is built like an OG boomershooter (aka: original Marathon games) or system shock 1. Your zoomer is showing.
>>740912860They know it isn't a Sprint......But a Marathon. *wink*
>>740945367By that logic it is mandatory and goos to appeal to trannies and nigs with jewish propaganda.
>>740945414I dont think you have any idea what the term means beyond "game my step dad plays" lil' cuz.
>>740914136>Dunno how Bungie shits the bed this badI do.>Remembers them having to be tardwrangled all of MicroSlops tenure>Somehow SOMEHOW strikes lightning 3 times with Halo by cobbling together multiplayer maps in the 11th hour with extreme crunch
>>740944246It seems like a really bad idea to hinge your company's future on an expensive AAA game that only NEETs or students with tons of free time would realistically invest in.
>>740945414I (>>740944132) never claimed that Cryo Archive is built like anything. I'm just not a big fan of how it's built and the kind of gameplay it encourages. Also, I've player Marathon 1, and the absolute, dead last things you want to take from it and put into another game is the level design. And I don't think that Cryo is built like System Shock 1, either. I would love a UESC Marathon map built like something from System Shock, though.
>>740941746That requires them not botting it. Season 1 was nearly there until somehow MYSTERIOUSLY 1,000 players showed up every day for the last week or so of Season 1.
>>740945826>MYSTERIOUSLY 1,000 players showed up every day for the last week or so of Season 1Maybe they wanted to spend their loot and/or finish up the contracts.
The numbers are very odd. Like they added a "fun police bundle" that was a Recon Skin, Gun Skin and a bunch of cash shop currency for like 8 bucks and it sold over 250,000 times on steam and popularity reports show PS5 playerbase has significantly grown since the free trial and most people are running into console players on randoms. It doesn't seem to have followed any expected routes from release and best people can guess is theres a lot more players playing a lot less across more platforms. Like s1 was a hardcore central number putting in a hundred hours over a couple of weeks but theres way more but playing like two matches a day tops.
>>740945986>Like they added a "fun police bundle" that was a Recon Skin, Gun Skin and a bunch of cash shop currency for like 8 bucks and it sold over 250,000 times on steamI bought it, too, and then used the cash to buy the Sentinel skin.
>>740945986>fart out slightly different coloured skin>make 2 million dollars from steam aloneskins were the greatest con gaming ever pulled.
I like playing marathon but I prefer hunt showdown overall. The looting and grinding was fun but kinda bored with it. I like Hunt because there's minimal looting and everyone just wants to have fun cowboy shootouts. best extraction shooter on the market imo. best shooter outright actually.I don't think Marathon will survive many more seasons unless bungo adds way more content. A PvE mode in its current state would be complete ass, but a Halo style singleplayer campaign would be sick. I think an arena style PvP mode with blue level free kits would be cool, there needs to be a way to practice higher level pvp so people want to bring in better items and stop using free kits.
>>740912860"Small but extremely dedicated community" is a niche but perfectly sustainable business model. I say this as someone who still plays a reboot of a 2007 Java MMO in Old School RuneScape.Marathon may never grow to Destiny numbers, but I'd argue that it doesn't have to. The core base of Marathon players are about as hardcore as it gets, absolutely ride or die with the game every single day. These fans will buy every battle pass, and routinely purchasing LUX for new cosmetics. I cannot be convincing otherwise, because the Marathon fanbase is one of the most passionate I've ever seen, regardless of its size.I don't see a world where Marathon's core players dip because of a balance update or new PvE/PvP mode. The game has the potential to change radically over time to allure new players, all while still maintaining its base of fans who keep buying the battle passes and premiums currencies. The doom and gloom I'm seeing over season 2's numbers seems super hyperbolic. It's competing with a highly praised Destiny 2 update, and after folks finish up with the sunset D2 they'll naturally migrate over to Marathon.
>>740945986>it sold over 250,000 times on steamSource on that?
>>740946828This reads exactly like an AI generated PR statement to shareholders lmao
>>740919618All dungeons are free now.
>>740946828That doesn't work when just keeping the game running from server costs and whatever employee salaries to keep the game running, much less actually creating content updates, runs you in the hundreds of thousands a month. And that is on top of the 250-400m price point. Marathon doesn't need a small niche community until its more than a year old. It needs a large community right now, or it won't ever make its money back.
>>740946346None of the guns in Hunt ever felt satisfying to use for me, and I was always waiting for an interesting weather condition when loading in and disappointed when it was the same shit over and over again.
>>740946828>>740945986right right, im sure they can support 500 devs working on this game being 62 on the steam top seller list
>>740914639I mean it's pretty much confirmed Sony is dissolving them isn't it?
>>740945826sure dude, you can't admit to being wrong so you think it was botted. KEKW
>>740947350Dissolving? Not, it's "restructuring".

>>740914136it's a game no one wants to play, simple as that. you can't fix it without literally changing the entire game
>>740939438Actual fucking nonsense. Why is this bullshit being repeated so often this past week? That's not how a business works.
>>740946828I pity the redditor/ChatGPT instance that typed that out. Do they not teach basic economics in high school anymore?
>>740946828>after folks finish up with the sunset D2 they'll naturally migrate over to Marathon. You're retarded. Just because the majority of Marathon players came over from Destiny doesn't mean that Destiny's player base wants to play Marathon. The vast bulk of Destiny players hate Marathon and want nothing to do with it.
Player count cuts by half every 6 days, at this point its just a sunk cost fallacy, like owning a switch2.
What THE FUCK is up with this "game"?>Extraction shooter>Best loot is free >Boss loot is locked to weekend gated event>Quirk chungus 3d printer skittles bot designs>Zero character customising options>$19 dollars just to use solid red color on your shitWhich giga brain yachob retard green lit this?
