There's something about FF Legend/SaGa 3 I can't quite describe but it's just not the same as 1 or 2

It literally isnt, Kawazu and the team that made 1 and 2 were making Romancing SaGa, but the Game Boy games were too lucrative to not make a third one so they got some guys together to make it
The same team behind FFL3/SaGa 3 would also make Mystic Quest and Treasure of the Rudras

IIRC there's some npc or sign or something somewhere that tells you what row/column to check there. I don't remember exactly what but I know the game tells you.
Been way too long since I've played SaGa 1.

Final fantasy legend is a weird game. I'm old and had it brand new back in the day and have a ton of nostalgia with it. But you can get soft locked easy. I love it for nostalgia but can't recommend it
>>
>>740913554
>>740914863
Holy mother of soul, I grew up with these. All I can remember is the machine gun sounds and always worrying about how many charges/uses of attacks and weapons I had left, and eating monster meat to mutate lol. Had no idea it had absolutely nothing to do with Final Fantasy until over a decade later. Absolutely bizarre games, but it's what we had
>>
>>740913554
was the first one the one that started as a mana game?
>>
>>740920194
that was final fantasy adventure

christ, square in the 90s really did have to put "final fantasy" on fucking everything

so you mean square had a final fantasy adventure AND a final fantasy legend series on game boy?
>>
>>740914863
The only thing I remember about these games is that I just couldn't seem to hit with the higher level attack items, so I ended up constantly running back to the first town to restock on the basic bitch noob weapons. They hardly did damage, but at least they hit.
>>
>>740921172
I think 2 fucked with the accuracy formula and had hit chance based on agility so if you had your characters using strength weapons, they'd miss way more.
>>
>>740920393
The mana games (adventure) are an actual spinoff, SaGa (legend) was just branded as final fantasy in the west despite not being related.

That's because as other people said it wasn't made by Kawazu so it lacks the juice of the other games.
The DS remake however was made by Kawazu so it feels and plays like a real SaGa game AND keeps almost all the design elements from the original game and adds more interesting time travel stuff at a gameplay level, not to mention new music
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUy01CU3wcQ
>>740930473
It is a common mechanic in roguelike games, Kawazu adopted the mechanic because he played a lot of Hack when he young and really liked how you could eat enemy corpses to get a variety of effects like resistances or stats, so he implemented a similar mechanic in the sci-fi subset of the series, SaGa's main influence outside of classic tabletop games is roguelikes.
>>
>>740931248
I hope games like this make a comeback. They have so much more soul

that's SaGa 1
the chainsaw is supposed to instantly kill anything with lower stats than the user but it does the opposite, so it can kill bosses including the final boss (who is, to my understanding, a nonspecific creator god rather than based on any belief)

They're gameboy games from the late 80's and SaGa 1 was literally the world's first handheld RPG, there's not much but what's in there is honestly pretty good, if you want deeper worldbuilding you need to look into the later games.
>>740934532
No, it's Kami/God, which is why it was localized as the more neutral Creator abroad to not offend soccer moms.
Odin was one of the gods in SaGa 2 though and recently Emerald Beyond also has a throwback to that with King Din and Brighthome being modeled after Valhalla.

SaGa 1 God/Creator is more explicitly styled after the abrahamic God as some of its attacks like "let there be light" are direct biblical references, at the same time he's a clever meta joke about Kawazu himself.
>>
>>740934532
Nah Odin is a separate figure who you fight earlier in the game.

SaGa Emerald Beyond brought back a lot of the monster and robot mechanics from the GB games and Frontier, and introduced a few new oddball races too. One character is a plant person with very low LP but reincarnates after death and grows and matures again over the course of battles, really cool system.

are you a bad enough dude to beat BRAIN LORD????

>>
>>740938106
Brain Lord is a pretty decent Zelda clone and I did enjoy it but it weirds me the fuck out in the bigger context of its own series
>>
>>740934206
Did someone do a video about the chainsaw or something? I hate how everything has been compressed into shitty, surface level YouTube 'content' and things get associations based on a couple of popular videos
>>
>>740935128
Odin is fron SaGa 2
The first time you party wipe, you're sent to meet him where he offers to revive you whenever you die in battle, basically letting you letting you retry for free, on the condition you will fight him later on
After you fight and beat him, you don't get revives anymore, dying is just a game over now
(also you can save anywhere so it's not really a big difference but it's still cool shit)

eh I think a lot of FF fans who only vaguely know of SaGa have always only known it as "that game boy game that got rebranded as FF" and/or "that game where you kill god with a chainsaw" for a long time, it's what people always seem to be most familiar with when I bring it up to someone who doesn't know this series

Both SaGa 2 and SaGa 3 got amazing DS remakes, they were never localized and barely even advertised because it was Wada's dark ages of SE but they're both great Minstrel Song style remakes with tons of improvements without messing with the content or the original game design.

FF Adventure is more of a true Final Fantasy than anything SE has put out. Also I truly mean 100% seriously that the gameplay in FFA far better than FFXV

2 is the best because your dad is an indiana jones looking dude and joins your party with a machine gun and magic nukes

oh and you can add robots as party members which have really fun gameplay.

>>740950393
all robot party is the objective coolest way to play it
and saga frontier for that matter (even if only one route lets you)

Pretty soulful art. All this old Saga art is really good. Scarlett seemed really weird.
>>
Are FF games even good or is it just franchise investment?
>>
>>740951469
i got that one fron danbooru lol, it's not official
scarlet grace has the misfortune of being a vita game made on a budget of nothing, which is a shame because the actual gameplay is incredible
i think it was trying to replicate the look of tomomi kobayashi's art in 3D, but i agree it wasn't great looking

Scarlet Grace has Kobayashi's art which is what everyone associates to the series, it's far from weird since she designed characters for almost every game in the series, even when she wasn't the main character designer she still made illustrations with her own interpretations of the characters

>dying to try the Saga/Legend games
>afraid that I'll softlock and lose a 40 hour save file before the final boss and ragequit them forever
what do
>>
>>740952841
none of these games are longer than 10 hours and the only softlock i know of in them is if you save in the final area of saga 1, since there's no way to go back
just dont do that and youll be fine
>>
>>740953047
>>740952841
How is it a soft lock if you're at the end and the game is functioning? And why are you hoarding single player linear game saves? You going to boot it up on your death bed and reminisce?
>>
>>740953594
>How is it a soft lock if you're at the end and the game is functioning?
Yeah bro just go into the final area with no healing items and the entire party at low hp, or at a ridiculously low stats that can't beat the last boss no matter how hard you try.

>a nuke…in a Japanese game?
Wut?

>>740954929
>His dad never gifted him a nuke
>>
>>740954929
Nukes are in a lot of japanese franchises. Even the more nationalistic ones like Muv Luv feature nukes prominently. I think you're taking western sissificaiton where everything is a the past taboo to talk about and applying it to Japan

You are currently acting out the caricature of a westerner getting offended on someone else behalf without understand anything about the people you're getting offended for them. If you're american, it's even worse--image nuking them and then telling them they need to be offended and can't talk about nukes anymore.
>>
>>740961798
Too obscure to define the game

NTA but an interesting touch is if you never die before you reach Odin, yo just fight him and don't have the conversation you were supposed it if you meet him before.
