Why were the Red Ring of Death and Yellow Light of Death so common?
>>740914913exploited cheap labor
>>740914913https://www.wired.com/2007/11/why-you-cant-ge/It was impossible to get a Wii in 2006& 2007It was a different time
That era really did feel like a hardware arms race compared to the shit we have now. Those consoles were actually bleeding edge machines when they launched.
rrod was a bad solder, pretty hard to catch it in QA
while I don’t discount the YLOD it was absolutely no where near the Red Ring in scale, the fucking Xbox team knew about the failure rate yet still sent them to market, I mean did anyone even agree how high it was? I remember seeing as high as 65% in reports, absolutely disgusting I burned through 4 Xbox 360’s while I still have a PS3 Fat that works, if it wasn’t for their eventual contrition in allowing repairs this should have killed Xboxthough the Xbone happened so I guess it didn’t really matter too much
>>740915291>pretty hard to catch it in QALMAO they knew about that shit but rushed it out to capture the moment with the consoles year lead against the PS3
This only happened to you if you were not pure of soul
>>740915398only happened to early adopters, jasmine revision chads stay winning
>>740914913really shitty hardware quality control. microsoft and sony are just companies where incredible volumes of incompetence throughout the company are extremely common
RROD could be prevented by replacing the internal X clamp whit more heat resistant one.YLOT on the PS3 was not fixable permanently as it was the literal bad solder on the chop that would melt from heat. The closet thing to a fix was hacking the PS3 and making the fan work at higher frequencies which made the console louder.
>>740915457Jasper* my 30 year old boomer memory is failing me
>>740914913RROD was common by a far margin, YLOD nothttps://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-360-failure-rate-542/1100-6215590/
It's the same design flaw present in both GPUs, it was an industry wide issue affecting all GPUs for a while.
>>740914913Red ring of death happened to nearly all of the early X360.Yellow light of death was no where near as common. Like no where near.I had 4 X360 back in the day with 3 of them getting replaced under warranty. My launch ps3 never died.
>>740914913TSMC sucked back then. They were making graphics cards that all died at the same time too.
just wrap a towel round it
RROD taught 12 year old me how to fix my own shit. I can't look back at it with the distain I did at the time.
>>740914913I never got the red ring. Kids just didn't understand that you can't overheat hardware. Even as a jit I gave that shit proper air flow.
>>740914913It was a big mistake making your hardware failure mode look like such an iconic design lol. Yeah dude thanks for the cool fucking lights saying the console is dead.
>>740915716RROD taught 80 year old me never to buy Microslop
>>740915734>Yeah dude thanks for the cool fucking lights saying the console is dead.this but unironically
>>740915657Chadtendo sama...
>>740915767Well the 360 was the last Microshit device I bought so I guess that too.
>>740915657Americans can't design good console hardware.Atari, Jaguar, 3DO, XBOXs... all trash and faulty.
>>740915734It's funny that the most common 3 lights error is a broken ring, like in Halo.
not having disc install on launch 360 also played into rrod. the disc drive generated a lot of the heat and vibration. I have an early 360, the one without hdmi port, and it works fine after all the software updates that let me install games to hard drive.
>breath on your 360 wrong>bricked for life>accidentally drop your PS1 in the bathtub>dry it off in the oven>throw it down some stairs>CD lid breaks>it still runs without it
>>740914913>Consoles need to be sold at budget whitebread costs to keep the dumb consoomers buying them, please ignore 599 us dollars over there>Home PCs start overtaking shitboxes in terms of their bang-for-buck, capabilities and ease of use, so consoles need to be even cheaper>Manufactured by chink factories with insufficient QA>Western governments demand a move to lead-free solder, which flows less easily>Budget shitboxes produced in chink factories with a more temperamental solder have fucking awful solder jobs that fail when thermal cycling or something and this wasn't caught in initial "QA"There's a reason that people could sometimes "fix" Red Rings by turning their shitbox 360s into impromptu reflow ovens to essentially get the console to resolder its bad connections.>>740915093>Overclocked Gamecube, Sony trying to sell their new licensed media reader with fiddly Japanese tech inside, 360 trying to get the poorfags to invest into the worst value proposition in gaming>>740915734>Oopsie doopsie something went wrong, no error codeThe 360 and its consequences were a disaster for PC.
>>740915093Nah. GTX8800ultra was 3x better than what the PS3 had.
YLOD was due to shitty solder used by Sony, you got it when the system runs really hot which is what happened when I ran GTA5 on my phat ps3
>>740915093They pretended with previews that the consoles they'd come on were fantastically good and could do them. The previews were not on the hardware to be.The actual hardware was shit tier.
>>740916034>you got it when the system runs really hot why gee, thanks Einstein
>>740915972I guess but they basically launched at the same time and the PS3 Cell was still a bleeding edge chip even if RSX wasn't. When the 360 launched there wasn't a GPU that strong yet.
>>740915093>>740915972As far as I know, the PS3 GPU performed like a 7600GT but had elements of the 7800. The PS3 and Xbox 360 were comparable to pretty high end PCs in their day. The PS5 and Series X were also comparable to pretty high end PCs when they were released. The PS4 and Xbone were the real damp squibs.
>>740915972Dark Souls 2... downgraded for PS3
>>740914913something something jeets fuck everything up
>>740914913>WhyBecause tree-huggers persuaded everyone that lead-free solder is the way to the future despite the fact ROHS solder has many downsides including brittleness which will often manifest in areas that undergo cyclic temperature induced stress. So we're saving environment by throwing away shitload of electronics that would otherwise work much longer if manufacturers could use normal solder.tl;dr: environment friendly solder cracks because of thermal expansion/contraction
>>740916067The solder was so shit you could reflow it with a hair dryer or oven
>>740915457I got my launch 360 because a guy owed me money for weed. I got quite a lot of use out of it before the RROD hit. Since I had essentially gotten it for free I just bought a new one, and that lasted for over 10 years. I gave the RROD'd one to a friend of mine, he did the towel trick with it, and got several more years out of it. Yes it sucked and was gay and a really bad look for the brand, but it also wasn't that bad and I'm pretty sure xbox would cover the repair/replacement.
>>740916178no one learnt their lesson so now you have environmentally friendly cables in cars, houses, utilities, etc being eaten by rats and squirrelsa fibre optic company in bongland went bankrupt because a buyer investigated and found their entire network had been chewed to shit by rats, since it was all use environmentally friendly cables
>>740916034>GTA5 on my phat ps3I was about to call you a liar and then I remembered 5 really did come out in the seventh gen
>>740916125I thought it was a 7800GT. That is what everything that talked about it said. Which the 8800gtx ultra is 3x better than. 7600 would be an utter POS.
>>740916128Nah. Dark Souls 2 was degraded for pixels and multiplayer.
>>740916205IIRC, you couldn't use a garden-variety hair dryer, you either needed a really high-end one or an actual heat gun (a functionally and visually similar device, but capable of operating at much hotter temperatures)
>>740916431>I thought it was a 7800GT.Think it was cut back and ran at lower clocks.Sony's relationship with graphics at that point was dumb. They originally wanted the PS3 to use 2 Cell CPUs instead, doing all rendering on the Cell. They ditched it last minute, went to Nvidia who pawned off some crap that would be obsolete rapidly (especially when they moved to unified shader architecture), who then also charged Sony every time they wanted to update the graphics library. Not to mention it couldn't use a shared pool of RAM because the Cell required RAMBUS memory. There were lots of poor, late stage choices. But honestly, it was still designed as being competitive with a good PC at the time, and I'd say it was reasonably successful in that. It of course, aged poorly and was rapidly dwarfed by newer PC hardware.
>>740916125Sony fell for their own Cell processor meme so hard they thought it wouldn't need a GPU originally. Software rendering in 2006, they almost went backwards.
I got RROD but I never got the Yellow LightMy PS2 did get the disk read error though, I got flashbacks to that shit a few days ago when I put Gravity Rush 2 disc into my PS5 and it couldn't read it. Had to clean it like 4 times
>>740916797>My PS2 did get the disk read error though,Luckily these days it's not so much of an issue because of the HDD mod.
if i remember correctly, i got a YLOD during a MW3 match when that game launched ages ago, and then i sold the brick after removing the hard drive and bought a refurbished 360 only for that one to RROD while i was playing halo reach. good times but man did it suck to be out like over a thousand bucks when both consoles had a good chance to die on you within the span of a year
>>740915291Yeah you could fix it by wrapping it in a towel or putting it in the oven for a bit The real problem was when the disk reader started fucking up. My brothers and I figured out that if you picked up the Xbox and dropped it at just the right time and height after inserting the disk, it would work normally. You could tell if it worked or not by the sounds it made from the disc spinning
>>740914913Planned obsolescence.
>>740915291hey dummy it's on record that they knew about the failure rate of the original model 360 and decided to proceed anyway
>>740914913RRoD was so common for basically every console until later versions>Heat would cause the board to warp due to poor engineering of the clamps on the heat sink>Board warping would crack the cpu and gpu housing and brick the whole consoleYLoD wasn't common at all and could have been many things>It became an issue later on due to the dust build up but it could have been various manufacturing issues.PS3 was insanely overpriced though and overengineered. 360 was probably Microsoft's best dick swinging exercise because they dumbed down the processes for studios. That was also why ps3 had no games, people couldn't be fucked figuring out how the hardware worked.Sony basically wanted a console to last 10 yearsMicrosoft just wanted to beat Sony to market
>>740914913never got the yellow light but I got rrod twice
>>740914913The RROD was just a staple of the Xbox at the time. Microsoft would always build test models for stress testing with slightly higher shelf parts, then once they'd pass, they'd downgrade to shittier components and hope for the best.
>>740914913>Yellow Light of DeathLiterally never heard of this
>>740916178>>740916316>Amerisharts hate it when their shit isn't actively poisoning them kek
>>740918272it was like a myth, you could find it on youtube, never saw it in person, the RRoD meme was rampant. But the YLoD lurked in the darkness, a bogeyman, even if you never saw him
>>740918419>tonnes of extra electronics sent to landfills because of nauture-friendly solder are totally inert, not polluting at allTop retard take you fucking imbecile. Also check your time zones retardo, I am europoor, mutts are asleep.
>>740914913>hello microsoft got rrod>hi yes send your console>send them>get sent my xbox back with no rrod>no one stole it thru delivery>no bullshit insurance style making you ping-pong for months>no complaintsI feel like the era of things going smooth is overanyone else
>>740918425Ylod is the same as RROD for me. I never experienced either.
>>740915078I had a wii back then, but it was literally a lemon straight outta the box.Damn thing couldn't read discs
>>740914913>YLoDGood times.Made some nice money on the side repairing fat PS3s so fags can can remove their FIFA DVDs or copy their user profiles to new slims. The whole reflow procedure took roughly 30 minutes including disassembly, assembly and testing.
>>740914913My gunmetal mgs4 ps3 ylod on me. I tried fixing it it still kept dying
>>740915612>YLOT on the PS3 was not USER fixable permanentlyFTFYRepair shop with right equipment could do it but they were rare and it was expensive. The procedure is called re-balling because the chips use BGA (ball grid array) connection to motherboard.
>>740917042>out like over a thousand bucksyou know you could've done this >>740918864
>>740914913In the case of RRoD, rushing a product to market without adequate testing/revision time which caused boards to melt due to overheating and poor ventilationIn the case of YLoD, environmentally-friendly unleaded solder which became brittle under heat and caused the GPU to fail
>>740919353Same, only a year after owning it in the middle of ff13 it shit the bedI could get a professional reball but I don't know if it's worth it since I have a PS3 Slim and a PS2
>>740915291I think it was leadless solder which yeah I guess is considered bad in its own way. probably some epa environmental bullshit because lead is cheap and was even cheaper comparatively back in this era
>>740914913because they cost like 299 a piece (after the launch flops)
>>740915078I'd admit I scalped a few Wiis and Wii Fits because I knew a connection at Walmart and Target. I was a broke ass college student. It became unsustainable once online shopping became dominant, and bots and macros buy up everything.
>>740914913>rrod>ylod>ps3 no longer backwards compatible >wii/wiiu>3ds>xbox 360 hdd crapshoot failures that era sucked looking back. the games were ok
>>740915657It's honestly amazing how the Xbox brand not only survived but was at its peak during this time. Almost 60% failure rate on a pretty expensive piece of hardware and people just kept buying it over and over. It's not unusual to read about people who went through 5+ 360s.
>>740922057just because the ps3 fat was overpriced and nogaems.
>>740922057MS had so much momentum and they lost it in a flash with the red ring and then pivoting to kinect shit. I remember everyone noping the fuck out of that console by the end and moving to the PS4
>>740921694>the games were okIt was the start of the downfall though. That was the era of "everything needs to be brown and appeal to mass audiences RIGHT NOW"
>>740914913Inefficient chips. They made a lot of heat.
>>740914913Not enough thermal paste or cooling, if you ever opened one of these POS you'd know how much of a clusterfuck it is to cool with everything packed together, it's part of the reason why I advocate waiting for the first console revision of any new console generation so as not to fall of the design flaws.
