First, we start by (You) killing yourself.

Stop using high tech stuff and go back to stone age sci-fi

Starfield wasn't a real sci-fi because they know fuck all about gun designs

I really fucking hate 'rules of cool' or 'style over substance' faggots

that has been serious sci-fi art since the 70s

Right is infinitely better.
>>
if your game violates causality in any way, it's garbage
if your game uses made-up materials, it's garbage
if your game doesn't have robust systems for me to design stuff, it's garbage
if your design systems have unrealistic corner cases i can exploit, it's garbage
>>
>>740916408
I wish Starfield was real sci-fi instead of whatever the hell it turned out to be.
>>
>>740916276
This. Each single alien race must be comprised entirely of hot space babes catered to every fetish and desire. The science must revolve around ways each race functions in relation to the fetish they represent and all human technology must ask and answer the question "how do humans get to fuck the hot space babes".
>>
>>740916757
what's the matter with that? asking genuinely
I don't think there should be one thing over the other, if your story doesn't need any kind of accuracy then I don't see the problem with fantastical designs
>>
>>740916408
>real sci fi

>>
>>740917712
Both are incredibly lazy and tend to end up with things just feeling retarded and forced instead of actually cool. The other thing is that you can still have fantastical super science shit and have it seem legitimate as long as you take the effort to explain enough to suspend disbelief, and you stay consistent instead of making stuff up on the fly.
>>
>>740918820
That will drag down the lore, world, and story. Please don't actually do this.

the TF is but he keeps the fetishy shit to his other comic and this one plays the horror straight

First take a philosophical question, then build an entire species or race around that.
Repeat how ever many times you need.

Realism only works as an aesthetic in a story.
>>
>>740918972
>That will drag down the lore, world, and story.
No?
>>
>>740919196
Anon, explaining anything in detail always ruins it. You bog down the pacing just to autist about shit nobody cares about. All you need it rules on what it can and can't do anything else is unnecessary.

Space cats, space cats have aids, space cats are horny

the galactic federation can not contain the space cat aids, there is also criminal low IQ black aliens that just ruin every planet and colony they go to with their loud music, uncouth ways and uppity behaviour.

Then there are brown religious fanatic aliens that are stealing everyone's jobs and lowering wages, they love forcing their religion and culture on everything that involves worshiping some sacred alien beast and drink its poop and urine.

is this sci fi enough?
>>
>>740915408
the trick is a mix of both
>ok yeah obviously we cant do this irl (for now at least), but IF WE COULD-

Explaining shit does the exact opposite. It makes viewers want to question everything and nitpick. You suspend disbelief by writing a story so engaging the viewers won't care about the plausibility.

>>
>>740915408
the present is stuck because instead of dreaming of what COULD be they're stuck with what IS.

in the past you could just say "this would be neat" in a single story, and OOPS you invented the idea for modern touch screen phones and now the show looks out of date because they thought it would be a single use tool.

modern sci-fi is SO obsessed with the now that instead of doing WHATEVER THEY WANTED modern startrek decided to go back in time twice to current year so they could talk about current politics.
in the past they would have over exaggerated the issue into a problem between 2 alien races, and looked into the values of both side taken to 10, then found the REAL solution by bringing them together by dumping dylithium into the drinking water and making everyone immortal.

and then someone would be inspired by that and focused on finding the ACTUAL make people immortal element.

dream bigger scifi artist.
>>
>>740916757
the "realistic" greebling of tech designs on the left of the OP pic has no real substance to it. you've gotta be extremo retardo to give up stylish cool design for bland brown & bloom.
>>
>>740923021
Greebles are cool and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.
>>
>>740923054
greebling only looks good on macrostructures (like Borg Cubes, Planets, & Space Stations) because it emphasizes the scale of the object. greebling a handgun or body armor is ugly and shit.
>>
>>740915408
By sticking more to the science and less to the fiction

>>
>>740920943
don't see what's horror about that. your pallette can change to start liking stuff you thought was disgusting, and some people straight up enjoy the disgusting tastes even if it doesn't (like coffee and beer)
if it tastes good it tastes good, just don't think about it.

No, you completely forgot to mention the alien race that funds the low IQ black aliens; they didn't invent the ability for interstellar travel themselves, obviously.

>>
>>740919564
You don't have to explain shit, just get it close enough for the viewer's own misinformation verisimilitude to close the gap.
The more you try to explain, the more shit you can get wrong.
For the classic example, see any time travel plot that tries to make even the smallest ounce of sense, almost all of them would make more sense if someone said "It behaves like time travel, we don't understand it really", rather than trying to explain technobabble, continuity, paradoxes and tachyons that are just going to contradict each other by the end anyway. Even the bare minimum amount of explanation will throw up some inconsistency.
>>740921973
In the past you could've used a vibrator as a prop, said that it solved world hunger and no one would recognize what the actor was holding because it appeared at 240p or whatever and there was no internet.
Now anyone can do a reverse image search of a 4k scene and see that it's a greebled up electric shaver for ass hair and there's a Discord of nerds discussing how it would actually work.
>>740925615
>It's a teleporter paradox episode
>>
>>740915408
Fascinating... the use and placement of the characters is influencing how I think and feel about what I see
>>
>>740926361
>no one would recognize what the actor was holding because it appeared at 240p or whatever
yeah dude, except in the past people still figure out what a prop was with almost 100% accuracy.

like that one background prop from empire strikes back they realized was an ice-cream maker, and sprung up a cult following for the character.
https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Willrow_Hood

or how fans knew the cool james bond gun just being a pellet gun.

the trick was that the people who knew couldn't spread it around as fast.

so 100% if you used a rampant rabbit as an alien food generator, some degen in the crowd would recognize it, post it on the movie fan BBM, or dildonics MUC and like, 5 other people would be SUPER impressed, assuming they managed to track down a catalogue with a picture of the thing to compare it to.

then one of those degens would be working for an icecream company and name the next miracle pill after it, or match the color scheme, and oops now an entire generation of kids is eating AIDS
>>
>>740926361
This is why most «sci-fi» is utter garbage. Oh, there’s time travel? And its casually available to people? How the f does that work? Oh, just don’t think about it? Literally the opposite of sci-fi. The whole point of sci-fi *is* to think about it. But mostly what they want ro think about is the character drama. That’s not sci-fi, that’s a soap opera. Looking at you, Star Trek.
>>
You will never make sci-fi realism spergs happy so don't even bother, just make stuff that looks cool and isn't completely retarded, same with any fiction setting really.

Make games with interesting science fiction stories. Most sci-fi games just have a sci-fi aesthetic but don't have much actual science fiction.

Games like Quantum Break and Control are good sci-fi games because their stories are good works of science fiction.
