By the end of the Ringed City DLC the world is basically over and Gael has been going around eating anyone with a fragment of the Dark Soul in order to collect it all within his body and amassing it together into something that more resembles the original full strength of the Dark Soul before the furtive pygmy spread it amongst other humans, which presumably makes this painting world Gael is trying to create particularly special compared to the other painted worlds because those previous painted worlds only used small fragments of the Dark Souls to make them while this new one Gael wants to make will likely contain all or most of it.
