I had no trouble with that after the intro. Also, the mechanics don't exactly work by height. Recognizing the ledge types is more important

2006 was such a dire fucking year. I googled and saw some retard redditor saying this was a list of GOOD games from that year. Holy shit what a bunch of absolute slop, nothing has changed in the past 20 years except that indies are finally picking up the slack from the failing legacy companies.
>>
>>740949006
There's something you're overlooking then. Some side areas will require specific sidearms or trinkets, but you start the game with everything you need to complete it.

This is NOT Link's Awakening, this is top down GBC Elden Ring with a dodge roll that has a full second and a half of startup. Go in with that expectation and you'll be fine.
>>
>>740949079
If you enjoy the genre and the graphics bring out nostalgia, it's very good.
Otherwise, it's just a decent top down action rpg with meh graphics.

Nta but in my experience, you make a Mina thread in /vg/ and it gets moved to /trash/ or /v/ then deleted by the mods.
It almost feels like there's an effort to stifle discussions on this game.
But I'm fairly certain it's a coincidence and mods just really hate anything with an antro protagonist.

Hammer because it was the only weapon with an appreciable 'moveset' early on. By the time you finally start finding (or purchasing) upgrades for the others, I was too used to the Hammer timing to switch off of it for something that does less damage.

Whip. First playthroughs are for canonical, developer intended playthroughs to see what their vision and original intent is.
Second playthroughs are for bending that vision and intent to my preferences.
That being said, I still prefer the whip after beating it. Hammer is clearly much better with a better skill cap and output.

+dagger throw upgrade. Used them and zoomed around. As result jumping slowed you down, because the game doesn't seem to have momentum.
>>
>>740951489
You also get a trinket that extends burrow time and another that increases its speed I think.
Otherwise there are modifiers that make her move up to 4 times faster.
>>
>>740951849
Best trinket in the game is the one that lets you chain burrows. Not only because it trivializes water but because it just means you have burrow speed near constantly.
I wasn't able to take it off after putting it on.

Septemburg first?
I must be retarded, I did the crypt first and bog second because I couldn't find anywhere else to go.
I've tried to get to bone beach and have no idea how, the two times I've entered the area I was blocked and it looked like they were backtrack shortcuts cause it was just rope on a ledge
>>
>>740952506
Yes, they did. Some people argue that it was done on purpose and the devs knew exactly how this would be interpreted.
>>
>>740951046
its just counter marketing by big money to deter game discussion from /v/. you ever wonder why there is always a world of warcraft(never warcraft 1-3) thread up on /v/ that never reach bump limit?
>>
>>740952486
I tried doing Bone Beach second and while the area itself wasn't too bad, the Mined Mind boss fight was terrible.
Its just too difficult to avoid damage during the fight, its mandatory to have a handful of HP upgrades to allow for tanking, plus give buffer room for healing.
>>
>>740952635
The newspapers and npcs strongly push you
>crypt
>bayou
>Septemburg
>Bone Beach

But you can absolutely go to anyone of those first and finish it except Orrery.
And you can actually go to Orrery first if you go enough into the bayou to get the fishing pole.
>>
>>740950913
I love the shield
>excellent defense
>big damage parries
>can force your way through to a better position with a well timed jump attack
>jump utility with the throw replaces the need for any pit trinkets
>the throw pierces shields and can be thrown around corners

The hammer is pretty sick too though.
>>
>get map upgrade that lets you see how much trinkets and collectibles you missed per area
>missing at least 5 per area
How the fuck? I swear I explore and hit every breakable in every screen how is there this many secrets?
>>
>>740953330
There's lots of really well-hidden stuff. I was at 90% item completion and still finding new screens that I had missed.
>>
>>740950913
Daggers because DPS and a high attack level melts enemies. After the second upgrade you get another attack that is a slower and heavier.

Idk if the hammer or whip was changed after the demo last October but I didn't like how slow the whip was and how I'm too retarded for the hammer

My retarded route was
Crypt
Septemburg,
Bone Beach,
Swamp
Astral Orrery
Coltrane.

Even without cheesing or backtracking, I think you can get to the orrery pretty early, there are only 3 blocks in the column barricading the way, and I think some of the rows have duplicate colors, so you might only need 2 mirrors to actually open the path.

Coltrane felt like that hardest and least fun level, so doing it last feels right over Orrery. Especially with Thorne.
I think the mirror switch gimmick forced them to put Orrery last in the game-recommended route so having one platform color not unlocked wouldn't look strange.

Really, just crype feels intentionally watered down as a first level, and Coltrane feels intentionally cranked up as a late game level.
Everything else can be swapped around. Bog asks for heavier platforming. Septemburg asks for pattern recognition and movement. Beach asks for vertical space awareness. And Orrery asks for a little of each.

At the absolute earliest, it can be your first generator with zero backtracking by going Bayou first and grabbing Pit Preserver + the Bayou mirror.

Not my experience, Coltrane kinda blitzed by.
its short, its missing an npc hub the other areas have, the second half of the stage is very linear.
Its funny because a bunch of NPC's talk about being unable to reach coltrane, but when I finally did, I have to wonder why? There is nothing there? the rail grinding gimmick in particular is cut short.

Its a shame because the boss themeing is pretty strong, haunted train is a cool idea, but it isn't explored enough.

The wording is also important for trinkets and effects.
>HP drains over time
So the green cloak gives you a longer survival time.
>X attacks do less damage
So blue cloak gets to compound that with 25% extra.
Just small little bumps in either direction for types of damage taken and how its taken.

On paper in a normal fight, yes, it's about 50% total.

You're right, it is rather short.
I guess just a few compounding things like Thorne rematch, the somewhat obnoxious snowball escort, and more spiteful puzzle rooms like Rupert made it feel like a deliberately oppressive area by design.
and I don't mean ice physics, obviously the shoe spikes negate the entire level's "artificial difficulty."
Lots of npcs also talk about how Coltrane is this oppressive maelstrom of evil and death at the top of the world. You don't even learn what the orrery is until you're inside and some dude tells you they study spark and plasma and were exiled for getting all mad scientist. It's just more visually impressive with hype music.

It's because those Gameboy games had restrained limitations. Technology was rapidly evolving in the 90s. What we got out of Gameboy games was a stylized art style to work AROUND the technological limitation of the Gameboy.
Today, we have next to no technological limitation, so these games come off as looking cheap and plastic in an attempt to immitate that Gameboy charm without creating it.
It's an art style that holds itself back on purpose to try to immitate something that simply did it better while trying to push itself forward. It's easy to see through the ruse of nostalgia and only see cheap asset garbage.

Now that I think about it, wouldn't Below Zero be easier with the secret ending? Sealing the Duke in tomb counts as nuisance, but I don't know if it counts if you leave the lid open).

Lightning grip procs off of any weapon damage, and wiggling the whip counts as multiple small hits. If you get a lucky dice roll you can chain a fuckload of lightning strikes. It’s not very practical tho

None of the weapon upgrades are mandatory and you can unlock all the weapons once you get past the linear tutorial section fairly quickly. You can even get a couple of weapon upgrades from the black market seller(I think hammer and coffin) early as well, you just need to complete one spark tower after buying them.
>>
>>740972095
It's less about mandatory and more that getting all the upgrades fully unlocks your toolkit. So it sounds like it could be fun to balance which areas you want to do first with what areas give the upgrades for your weapon first

Baron is a pretty cool sounding title even if it's not exactly the highest rung on the ladder, I've always felt that if I was some kind of evil nobleman calling myself a baron would be the way to go.
Like ooooh, I'm so scared of the earl. I bet the viscount can really throw down. You'd better watch out, I've heard the duke gets really cross when he hasn't had his tea.
Count can work but only if you're already a vampire, otherwise people will automatically associate your title with someone way cooler than you.

No because a game should be designed to get harder as you upgrade yourself to offset your new power. It shouldn't play easier, you can just do more things. Too many modern games start off hard and stay the same so when you upgrade, you trivialize them.
>>
>>740974957
Well, I guess you can actually. I was just in the logic of speedrunning from a fresh start. If you do it in ng+ you only avoid combats and aim straight for bosses. Choosing trinkets is also important, stuff like burrowing codex work well to avoid basically all normal platforming challenge in the bayou dungeon.
>>

For all of Lionel's faults I don't think a lack of sincerity is one of them. I think he genuinely believes that his vague and self-glorifying plan would be best for everyone, I think he deluded himself into truly believing that Mina and Thorne just suddenly went insane and betrayed him for no reason, and in his own way I think he liked the people of Ossex.
Even when he and Mina were alone at the top of the tower he stuck to his act to the point where I don't think it was all an act. He's completely insane, but he believes anything he says even if he doesn't believe it until he's said it.

I happened to revisit this screen and saw there was a pond in the corner with a fish. The fish went away before i could try to catch it. I do AND I draw it, it was my favorite one and finally having a cute girl to represent it is great.

Would you have liked the shield more if you didn't find it in a room with 20 fucking enemies that cover the floor in fire, immediately making it extremely unfun to have?

>>740983717
huh?
>>
>>740983735
The main times I disliked it were against armored enemies like lynels where my parries got blocked and I could only use the piddly standard attack or shield throw for damage, or advancing attacks like Evra's punch where I could parry the punch but instantly ate contact damage.

Also the shield throw not having the same input as most other weapons' new attacks sucked ass, I hate throwing my shield when I just want to put it away and take it out again.

If you mean those lionhead guards then there is a way to get a guaranteed parry every time. Bait out the melee attack, dodge the first stab to the side, and line yourself up at a 90° angle so after they change direction the second stab will aim toward you. If you parry the second stab they'll never block the parry.

hi everyone.
i want to ask why do mina pictures always have the flail with the spiky ball? i thought you could use different weapons. is it the best one?
thank you for reading!

I'm losing my mind not being able to find One Last Thing. Is this the best kind of hint the game's willing to give?

See bottom five lines. It's the canon weapon, but she's also a naive fool who simply didn't appreciate the beauty of the hammer until the player took control.

hello anonymous
this is because in nature, the mouse uses the flail for self protection. they also use this instrument to aid in the acquirement of cheese.
thank you for your attention to this matter
>>
>>740985150
The best hint the game gives you is in the newspaper.
>>
>>740985150
Anon, how are we to know what kind of thing you mean? Pull up the checklist and give us a look.

>>740985019
It's her sort of default weapon in a lot of the art, it's the default weapon on the weapon select, and it's meant to be the "balanced" one.
Plus, you know, heavily Castlevania inspired game.
>>
>>740985150
You should try reading the UI and pressing A but it's probably on the train
>>
>>740985019
It's kind of the default weapon, but I started with the hammer and you'd have to pry it from my cold, dead hands to make me use anything else.

Is there a particular encounter this hint is referring to for in Bone Beach? It seems to be talking about the guy you buy the polyp lamp from, but I couldn't get him to do anything bad and never saw him outside his shop.
The map says I'm just missing two bone gems so I'm not sure I even want to bother completing Bone Beach, i already ran through it again twice looking for what i missed.

There are apparently fishing rod upgrades in the game, but I'm on NG+ and still haven't found any.

I know it's the end of the thread but I'm really growing suspicious of things now that I knwo there's a big secret that's not been uncovered. This arrangement of grass in Septemburg is obviously in the shape of a 0 or 8, but I have no idea what to do with this information at the moment.

I'd expect the middle section to be diagonal if it were a 0
if it is supposed to be a meaningful 8 I have no input or theory beyond ng+8, but I also don't remember where it is or if there's any other number instances like that

from what I've been told, the devs have confirmed there's some secrets that haven't been found yet. It's making me a little schizophrenic, because now I can't unsee weird shit, like this one thing outside the Hollower's Guild. Why is it only on one side of the door? I'm scouring everywhere to find anything extraneous to find some kind of pattern.

I feel like there's an exit somewhere that dumps you out of there. I remember ending up in that area from an unusual direction and taking awhile to realize where I was, at least.
