I'm mostly talking into the void since there's maybe 50 people in the west who have played this game and at least half of them are antisocial jops but this was a true 1 of 1 experience, absolutely loved it

Minor criticism is that while I think the story does a good job setting up the conflict, the finale does feel a little bit rushed and there's not enough time to make you connect with the mom reincarnating as a teenager in alt reality to save her child from a premature death plotline but the ending still hits home

I'm tired of this game getting rated so goddamn highly when it's one of the most absolutely abysmal slogs of the century. Maybe this shit was some kind of monumental achievement back in 2007 or something but it absolutely does not hold up against even the most mediocre RPG Maker releases of the subsequent decade.

Are they different gameplay-wise or was there something else you hated about Rebirth?
I sort of assumed they were more or less the same thing split into parts to make as much money as possible
>>
>>740978102
The pacing in Rebirth takes a nosedive. Even if you ignore pretty much all the side content it's bad. Scenes that should take 10 seconds can stretch on for minutes.
>>
>>740975583

>>

I unironically love side quests and silly shit but this sounds like a problem. I'll read up more on exactly what -kind- of side content you are talking about before I pull the trigger.
For 25 bucks the problem wouldn't even be the money, it's more about the space these fucking games take, and the time I would be using on them.

Xanadu Next is great, although I personally prefer Revival Xanadu. Earlier Ys games are pretty short fun ARPGs. I could never really get the same bump combat fix again except from the first Xak on MSX2, with games like Lagoon falling a little short. Etrian Odyssey is good, although I've only played the first one. If the later games are even just as good I would assume they're worth playing. If anything you should be playing some Wizardry too if you like EO.

>>
>>740987490
How do you play cracked games on Linux? Lutris?
Like I said, I haven't pirated anything in a long time but I'm curious. All I play on Linux is through Steam/Proton
>>
>>740987603
After you've installed the crack, you could play it through a launcher of choice. I usually add the game to steam. If you want steam input, you would do the latter. Unfortunately, I couldn't get the game to launch through Steam, so I had to just try to run it with Wine. it worked, but no Steam Input meant I was stuck with the 360 controller or M/KB. I had purchase the game, so I could just play it via Steam, albeit with Denuvo.

In loading the game up again, I can see thattThe PC version is still kind of borked. I think the game speed is tied to resolution, and my launch options to lock the framerate don't seem to work.
>>
P3R is still uncracked? I thought some new cracker busted denuvo even without the hypervisor stuff.
>>
>>740988367
Yeah but he's constantly working on the newest big game to come out, doesn't seem like he's gonna have time to do all of the backlog of Denuvo games unless he can somehow automate the process or teach other people

Okay here's how to define good waifu-faggotry JRPG:
>Plenty of options 3-5+ harem choices (all can be in your team/organized or placed into it depending on whom you like.)

Tales, Trails, Bravely & Lost Odyssey
Lost Odyssey is the best but purely because of the short stories. The gameplay is fucking slow as molasses and the twists aren't much to write home about.
Vesperia is a good overall game with decent pacing and decent gameplay.
Trails has the worst pacing out of any rpg i've ever played and it legit does not get interesting.

I wrote a huge post about both games but accidentally hit the wrong button so the whole thing was eaten I think... in any event if open to indies and like SNES-era inspired JRPGs, I highly suggest both games by Something Classic
>Shadows of Adam
>Quartet

Both have native Linux support (the first releasing years before the Deck and Proton, so it was really some effort on their part to support Linux when it was more niche) and the pic is from Quartet. Highly recommend them both. SoA is not exactly groundbreaking as it was their first major game, but it is very competent and enjoyable and there's a lot to do. Goes on sale for like 60%+ off, and you can get the Complete Edition which comes with the expansion (definitely worth it) and a retro-style digital strategy guide, for like $7 or something, but even the $15-20 full prices I'd say its worthwhile for what you get out of it, but if you want to wait for a sale its a good discount. Quartet is much more recently released (not even a year ago I do'n't think) and its vastly expanded; many compare it to Octopath Traveler because you have varying vignettes and the protags of each come together but unlike OT1 (not sure about others) the characters interact when they eventually meet up. Mechanics have a neat active/inactive element in combat where you can use a standard turn action to rotate one of your inactive party members into ongoing combat in exchange for an active one . Overall very well done and its 1800s to early 1900s 'magitek' setting is a bit different than most fantasy JRPGs or the like. Sales aren't quite as big since its a lot newer, but I think you can get it for like 25% off so its close to $15 or so when on sale; the devs also seem to be adding some content in each patch, not sure if they're going to do a DLC expansion or not though.

Both games I think well worth the time

Yeah, that's clearly a part of it like many other SNES era JRPGs, but way you can choose which character's story you want to start with and then move along completing their chapters etc. lead many to think of Octopath.

>Wild west magitek
But its not. I already mentioned its magitek, but there's also a good bit of Europe. The(super)boss in the prologue/history bit is obviously Napoleonic era inspired, and as you can see the by names in the screenshot, there's a good bit of European inspiration. One character's starting vignette makes international relations a central issue, as well as how each country chooses to allow magic (or not) use and who';s allowed to do what.

DQ1 is a short and simple classic that anyone can enjoy. You can't go wrong with it.

DQ2 is a personal favorite but there's some weirdness, like "how was I supposed to know that was a false wall," and an endgame enemy that will cast the Sacrifice spell if certain conditions are met, killing itself and wiping out your entire party.

DQ3 is an absolute classic and one of the best in the series. It's one of the most acclaimed games in the series to this day.

DQ4 is a weird one where you only fully control one character, and everyone else is computer-controlled, and they sometimes make highly questionable decisions. There's a guy who's supposed to be a healer, but all he ever does is cast the instant death spell "Thwack," and it never works.

DQ5 is a storytelling masterpiece that follows your character from birth, through marriage, and into parenthood. It has the best collection of girls too.

And DQ8 is obviously the series finally leaping into fully-explorable 3D, with a great soundtrack. It also features one of my favorite DQ girls, Jessica, but I won't tell you why.

Eh, I greatly prefer PC; if you wanted the Switch 2 specifically then yeah, it takes importing or jumping through hoops to create a JP region store account etc.. Its really frustrating that SQueenix basically just ported the censored version to everywhere on PC (even if you switch it to JP audio or text etc), but thankfully this mod fixes the issues. I was a little worried because there wasn't an update for awhile, but just today it was updated again and addeed a bunch of new things including NPCs etc. Looks like the only thing yet to do is the Eastern War Garb for Ringabel but all the rest is finished; I'm pretty sure the dev will complete it all on their way.

Playing Nights of Azure, one of the older Gust games. Surprisingly runs very well on Windows 11, no issues whatsoever. Also, it's fully voiced and even has a fair amount of motion capture, like this dance. Pleasantly surprised.

The combat is action based with 4 minions, think real time Persona.

I'll never understand the point of censorship like this. You just risk turning away potential customers for what? Social media pats on the back?
>>
>>740994726
True, but I wouldn't describe a game inspired by and set in fantasy Meiji Japan as "Victorian" setting despite the time period being technically correct. Though the game has a bunch of historical inspirations though and they're used well.

>>740994797
I had hoped that playing it on PC with the JP region text/UI + voice settings would also be natively uncensored, but I think they just sort of cheaped out - there were some Japanese players complaining about this too. As far as the censorship, I actually made undub and decensor patches for the 3DS versions (and Bravely Second) back in the day - the original version didn't support JP audio for NA release either, but that was supposed to be because of game cart storage limitation. For the HD remaster, they at least let JP audio be included as they know people like that, but I do wish they would have just decensored everything especially given they tweaked the ages up just like before (in the original JP 3DS version, Japan actually had 2 versions confusingly named, and the Western version is based on the later one with more content. All playable characters except one, including both girls, were under 18 in the early JP variant so I'm sure that's why they censored all the revealing outfits for the western 3DS version), but with everyone 18+ for the remake across the board they had no reason to worry about accusations of revealing clothing on minors in the west etc

I think it was a lucky break you could import the JP version on Switch 2 but its not like they even gave an official Western accessible version that was uncensored. I'm still glad it came to PC and that there's a decensor mod, but with Steam distribution its not like they even had to worry about global ratings or anything else that you'd need for console platform launches, boxed or otherwise.

Kinda cute that zoomers think Steam/Valve has some spyware running in the background constantly scanning your files and they will ban your account if the checksum doesn't match.

I mean, if this was a thing, you wouldn't be able to mod any game, ever.

falling into the trap of deciding that what people who are not your paying customers think matters in any shape or form.
>>
>>740995301
In this case, I think its a combination of both
>Squeenix being told by lolcowlizer-type consultants that the West thinks everything is problematic
>Laziness in the porting and global release
The issue for the game as I wrote above went back to the 3DS versions long before culture war faggotry was all over social media in the same way, but for the Remaster (which is actually done well aside from the censorship issue), so I think it was a matter of something like
>I just want to have a single version to release on Steam to make it easy
>We already made the Western Switch 2 version to release globally that takes out all the shit that could make people have a tantrum, lets go with that.
as it wasn't like the uncensored bits were active in the Japanese version (though I've been told that some of the assets in at least one outfit's case ARE in the game files but unused. Sadly this was not the case for all the textures or else it would have been so much easier and faster to mod), so JP players on PC got screwed too.

Hopefully all these companies are starting to get the message- just on Steam's forums alone there were many topics about the censorship that were offputtting, along with how long it took to come to PC. Frankly, Bravely Default (and bravely second for that matter) should have been HD Remastered and released on Steam BEFORE Bravely Default II, but at this point I'm glad it got here at all rather than having to jump through the hoops of emulation and necessary hacks to get around lack of 3DS online connectivity. The HD Remaster's version is actually much better and expanded vs the 3DS in that regard . The Switch 2 exclusivity for a time didn't help either, so between the delay and the censorship I really hope SQEX doesnt say that the PC version didnt "meet expectations" or something.

Still, overall the PC I think is easily the best version of Bravely Default now, and w/ the decensor mod the last issue resolved.
>>
>>740995301
Not sure if this is bait but, the vast majority of people won't care about minor outfit changes like this, and you avoid the sexy kid in a thong situation, so it's a win-win.

The pacing is much slower. Rebirth covers from Kalm to City of the Ancients. Even when it skips Rocket Town and Wutai it sill meanders a lot. >>
Ok bros, what 90s JRPG should I play before I start the 2000s? So far I've beaten:
>FF1-8
>DQ 1-6
>Tales of Phantasia
>SMT I and II
>Phantasy Star I-IV
>FFA, Secret of Mana, Trials of Mana
>Earthbound
>Chrono Trigger
>Ys series
>SMRPG
>Live a Live

I attempted Star Ocean but I didn't really enjoy it so I won't be playing those games. Same for Tales but I managed to push through and KILL DHAOS. I was thinking maybe Atelier Marie, or perhaps Persona 1. Am I missing any other essentials? No SRPGs, I do not have the patience for them so no Fire Emblem.
>>
>>741010745
>Star Wars
They raped and killed that IP too. Nobody gave a fuck about the Disney plus show they shat out in theaters.
>>
>>741006550
Depends on the game. I'll usually do post-game stuff so long as it doesn't involve absurd amounts of grinding (and even then I might do it if I enjoy the game enough and the grinding process itself is fun in some way.)

>>741006646
RS2 is actually one of the easier ones to get into, since it provides the player with an overarching goal right at the start and guidance on what you can try to achieve at any given moment. Some entries have character choices where you are basically just dumped into the middle of the world and left to figure out everything for yourself.
>>
>>741012250
Lufia 2. It's a mix of FF x Zelda. And yes you should start with Lufia 2 because Lufia 1 is worse and spoils the ending

Trying to decide between DQ7 Reimagined, Sky 1st Chapter Remake, or Mon Hun Stories 3
I never played the original DQ7 and am heavily intrigued by the remake
The original Sky trilogy is an all time favorite of mine so it kind of be a replay with a fresh coat of paint
and I haven't played MHS1/2 but enjoyed the demo for 3, gameplay was fun but I hear mixed things on how the story eventually plays out
>>
>>741012250
I think you should consider giving Star Ocean 2 a try even if you disliked the first one. SO2 is why most people give a shit about the series.

Atelier Marie isn't a bad choice. The SaGa and Metal Max games are also worth checking out, as is Valkyrie Profile.

Terranigma is interesting. The Suikoden series is decent, especially if you like having a ton of characters to choose from, but tends to be pretty slow paced. Koudelka's combat system is a bit of a mess, but it's worth checking out if the plot, characters, and setting can carry a game for you.
>>
never played any JRPG's only CRPG's

>>
>>741012557
RS2 does have the imperial ministers who tell you what is going on around the world at any given moment but you're not given any info on how the quests can actually be solved, unless you're playing the demake which has full on handholding at all times and plays itself.
Other SaGa games don't necessarily nudge you towards quests like RS2 does but on average they don't have nearly as much branching and player input as RS2 does either so they're actually easier because you don't have to worry about multiple choices and fail states, only Minstrel Song, Emerald Beyond and maybe Scarlet Grace are like that and the latter two don't even have real fail states.

And you really shouldn't need to grind in 3 unless you're constantly changing party members/classes for whatever reason. You can beat the game fine leaving everyone on their original class too, worst case you might get to to the last boss with a mage who can't survive two ice breaths in a row.

If you didn't understand that you need to talk to bunny girls when you were looking for info I don't know what to tell you, I also don't see how that is different from RS2 doing the same exact things or worse.
The game doesn't tell you how to unlock the hidden passage through the castle before Thomas gets kidnapped, it doesn't tell you that you can avoid the kidnapping entirely with some specific choices before Cyfreed's guards take Thomas back, you can also completely skip all the aforementioned stuff by not going into Cumberland as soon as the quest opens up so the questline already starts into the full civil war route, or you can accidentally end up in the civil war route by either getting out of Cumberland outside of the specific grace periods the quest gives you or by simply getting your party wiped out before the martial law starts, and there's even more convoluted shit than this in RS2 because that's how SaGa works.

What are the best chosen ones narrative JRPG?
>>
>>741017268
Probably Trials of Mana. Literally only gets "Chosen" because Fairy would fucking die if she waited any longer so she picked the first Rando who found her and luckily that one had a "Pure Heart" and a motivation she could exploit and her Chosen never actually gets to use the Sword.

I'd say the Mana series in general is pretty good at it because it tends to empathize that it fucking sucks.

And this will probably be disagreed with, but i think L'Cie were actually really cool in FF13/Fabula Nova. But Type-0 did it the best there IMO.

The series largely improved over time, culminating with VII, which is a mediocre JRPG rather than a bad one. Sadly, Compile Heart inexplicably seemed to give up on the main series after that.

Out of the spinoffs, 4 Goddesses Online and Hyperdevotion Noire have acceptable gameplay.
>>
>>741029723
NTA but what did the patch change?
>>
>>741015549
I like the genre, but it wouldn't be my first choice if I was making a game. My inability to produce art assets prevents me from making anything, though. I can handle everything else, but every method I've tried of making visual art is either tedious and boring, useless for what I want to do, or arcane bullshit that no one can explain and seems impossible to learn if you don't just find the basics intuitive.
>>
>>741015549
Playing a game and making a game are very different experiences. I like exploring new places and discovering crazy plot twists, so making my own game would remove these elements of surprise.

>>741029723

After SaGa 2 came out Kawazu and his team moved onto making the first Romancing SaGa on SNES, but Squaresoft executives of the time really wanted another gameboy game since the first two games printed an absolute shitload of money.
Kawazu refused because he wasn't interested in making yet another gameboy game and RS1 development already started, the greedy suits ignored him and pushed the project onto another team anyway, the same team that would later go on to develop Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and Rudra No Hihou, as a result SaGa 3 doesn't play or feel like the rest of the series and just sorta recycles random stuff from the previous games, in fact it has a lot more in common with Mystic Quest.
Later on Kawazu personally remade SaGa 3 on the NDS and turned it into a real SaGa game, imo it's still kinda worth to play OG SaGa 3 because outside of being too short to waste your time it's a good example of what happens when a creator is forcefully stripped out of development and a series loses its identity, the Romancing SaGa 2 remake is a repeat of that.
>>
>>741029503
Raidou is piss easy for better or worse. Your demons will still just stunlock everything if you give them as wide of a spread of attack elements as possible.
>>
Currently replaying dq8 but the DS remake this time on emulator.

Dq games are weird since they're extremely easy and you can first try every boss without breaking a sweat but then suddenly you hit a story boss that feels numerically impossible with your current gear/stats.

For dq8 it's the first dhoulmagus encounter with the 2 stage boss fight. I reloaded the fight 10 times via save states until I decided to grind and buy better gear and also looked up if I was mossing something obvious. Turns out I was like 5 levels below what people online recommend.

But I never even struggled with any boss before that so I never realised I was underlvled. I guess being able to just walk around encounters a lot in this version of the game robs you of too much xp for the convenience

Look up the alchemy pot recipe for a Cheiron bow and put it in Angelo's bag even if he's not using bows. Using it as an item heals everyone for 30-40.
Or level up enough on metal slimes to get Multiheal and cruise through the fight.
Dhoulmagus and one later boss can be a bit of a HP check, especially if you get a bad turn with his Snooze or War Cry spam.
