What is /v/ honest opinion on HD2D games and as an artstyle?
>>
>>740980382
I wouldn't call the SO remake HD2D. It's a 3D game with imitated 2D sprites. Much like the PS1 era titles but im reverse.
It's nice also.
>>
>>740980382
Honest question
Is it pronounced Live A Live or Live A Live?
>>
>>740980382
Never played any of them but the style looks cool.
>>
I hate it. I think they look ugly and there's a reason they're the only ones pushing that shit.

I like the artstyle but it's not enough to sell me on a game. Just like how I like sexy women but avoid gacha games despite them being the only non-porn games with sexy women these days. The artstyle is just a bonus. If the rest of the game isn't appealing to me, I'll skip it.

Also Octopath 2 is hands down the best Squeenix game since DQXI released in 2017.
>>
>>740980382
Star ocean 2 remake was a complete upgrade to the original, no censorship, tons of quality of life. The art choices were a perfect balance of maintaining the charm while updating the look beyond the limited capabilities of the original. Remakes almost never achieve this quality.

Square Enix is overusing it but it's not a bad art style. I don't think anyone would complain if, say, Game Freak used the style for their inevitable Pokemon Black/White remake instead of making it look like ORAS or BDSP.
>>
>>740981030
I tried to play it (PC version) but it kept crashing during the overworld map traversal for some unholy reason and eventually I got tired and stopped. Very nice remake though.
>>
>>740980382
Love it. Genuinely always wanted a 2D game with advanced lighting. The Octopath games are some of my favorite JRPG'S. Love that Dragon Quest got some HD-2D games, though I'm split on how they went about it. On one hand, I love what they did overall. On the other, I small part of me wished it was closer in style to Octopath.

Anyone looking forward to Elliot? Game looks dope

>>740980752
>Raibu A Raibu.
Top kek
>>
>>740980382
I think they look good but don't ever buy or play them so in reality they suck.
>>
>>740981529
unfortunate, they did patch it for quite a while (and add new content) so hopefully the issue is fixed.
>>
>>740981537
Yeah I'm impressed by the demo. I've been thinking about the Collector's Edition but it seems overpriced.
>>
the artstyle is fine but
1. the games themselves are bad
2. when you apply the same aesthetic toany games it stops being novel ans becomes stale
>>
>>740980382
I like it. It looks good.
I think haters just hate it because it is new and they are not open to new things.
>>
>>740980382
hd2d games can be great gameplay-wise.
i hate the artstyle to the extent that i typically wont buy them.
>>
I absolutely hated it when I first saw octopath, mainly because of the bloom. by the time it came out on pc and I was able to see it with those effects turned down/off, I basically did a complete 180 and found myself quite liking the look. or it was just stockholm syndrome. either way, I do like it now. except star ocean, that one looks weird to me
>>
Xenogears a shit
>>
>>740980382
It's ugly as hell and I wish Squeenix would stop spamming it in every non-AAA game.
>>
Dragon Quest III remake was the first dq game since swords that I didn't bother finishing

Live a Live was good, Octopath 1 too. Feel zero desire to play and of the other games in that style, it's very much B team sloppa
>>
>>740985361

>>740983848
This
>>
>>740980382
I'm not really v who hates everything and just watches streamers but I like it
>>
>>740981519
Honestly, I can't even say it's them over using, but rather that team asano is one last living dev groups capable of doing 2000s dev cycles
>>
The question I ask is if indie games should use it. Would you prefer Shrine's Legacy (real imitation of classics) or Spark Ignites (HD-2D)

inb4 "neither"

also the textures for Adventures of Elliot were really bad in the demo. I'm in a stage of AI paranoia so it made me throw around accusations

>>

hopefully Chrono Trigger is next
>>
>>740990564
Isn't it just a marketing term or something idk
What would you call Sea of Stars or Lumentale Memories of Trey if not HD

That's not my ochette.

Triangle Strategy - great story but I wish it had more battles in between the story, the cutscenes run a bit too long.
Octopath 2 and 0 - the pinnacle of hd-2d is 2, and 0 was a slight step back but made up for it in terms of how edgy and dark it went in terms of story. And also how long it was lol.

Really looking forward to FF Resonance. I hope it’s very successful and we get Chrono Trigger, Xenogears and some older FFs remade in this style.
>>
>>740980382
Star Ocean 2 Remake doesn't belong on this list. It uses something different. It's also the best game here even if it's just a remake.
Octopath II was almost great but it still doesn't have that cohesion between each of the characters.

I'm going to try Elliot because I heard it's mostly a mix between 2D Zelda and Ys, two genres that are solely lacking games for.
>>
HD2D is a good idea for Square to make smaller budget JRPGs but none of them quite have the quality of older PS1 or SNES RPGs. It's a talent issue. The people who make Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger are long gone.

>>
I like it well enough. It kind of reminds me of the battle screen in Suikoden I and II. I prefer Bravely Default's pop-up storybook art style, though. That game legitimately made good use of the otherwise pointless 3D on the 3DS.
>>
>>740990859

>>740980382
they should make a NEW final fantasy game or a NEW dragon quest game and give it a number like a real game. Dragon quest 13 or final fantasy 17 should just be HD2D games since it's obvious that the HD2D team can actually make games and the AAA slopmongers tasked with making numbered games otherwise can't handle the responsibility.
>>
>>740980382
Dogshit.

>>
>>740980382
>octopath1: tryharding retro style over zero substance. appropriately rated for being a mediocre 1st game.
>octopath2: marginally better than the 1st due to QoL improvements and slight variation of the formula, but still not the best game that octo2tards are saying.
>triangle Strategy: i liked the negotiation mechanic. does some stuff better than FFT, but overall still below it.
>SO2R: the nicest looking imo. makes the original game obsolete and sparse in content due to how much the QoL it introduced.
>>
>>740980382
I feel like it will make this era of JRPGs appear extremely dated since dey arr rook same.

Still mogged by NES and SNES games
>>
>>741004217
Longer than the first one. And that's with 2x speed toggle in battles.
100%d OT1 in around 80 hours.
100%d OT2 in around 70.
100%d OT0 in around 100.
>>
The games that go all in on it (Octopath) were initially doing something novel, the idea was visually distinct and it was interesting to see pixel art applied to a game in effectively a new way. I'm not a huge fan of where the visual design evolved to (especially the heavy particle effects and bloom), but I see why it was impactful.

However as it has gained popularity some of the more recent examples are just pure laziness. Star Ocean TSSR especially just looks like cheap dogshit. It makes zero effort to actually marry its world design to its character sprites and so just looks inconsistent and ugly.

In general I don't find it to be a very appealing style even at its best, though.
>>
>>741004909
>NES
Famicom RPGs are fucking horrible obtuse grindslop with a color palette of 5 simultaneous colors.
>>
i just hate how people act like final fantasy is an actual new turn based FF when its just a reskinned octopath
>>
how do i get good at octopath traveller (1)? I'm about 30 hours in and trash fights are slow. am i just unsettled

Dungeon Lurker is looking pretty good though:

>>
>>740980382
They need to stagger the releases a bit more. Also Adventures of Elliot is DOA
>>
>>741005271
*under levelled
>>
How Zelda is Elliot? People don't seem to talk about getting a dungeon item to do a dungeon.
>>
Are games like Paper Mario and Bug Fables considered 2.5D ?
>>
it's a good gimmick and i like it but i still like voice acting
>>
>>741005271
Unfortunately, that's just how it is if you're not feeding bp (merchant) to an AOE nuker (scholar) until you get passives and equipment that give offensive buffs at the start of battle.
>>741005253
>weakness system leads to stagger (break) but the weaknesses seem mainly to be generic elements
It's going to get old fast.
>>
>>741005650
It's more Ys than Zelda. Some Zelda things are just some dungeon puzzles and a fairy (and princess) companion.
