E.g, you couldn't make a mother kill her children before turning the gun on herself. She'd just kill herself, or die of a heart attack. Using the Death Note as a full-on mind control device was something they did in the life action Netflix version that was rightfully called out for being bullshit.

So you couldn’t write that someone goes monkey mode and beats an entire room of people to death even though that’s technically possible. But you could write that they do 5 backflips before landing on their head and breaking their neck.

The actual cause of death operates on a 23 day timeframe, so you only have a limited means of time to manipulate them up to that point. I'm not sure how much the influence on their actions is necessarily intertwined with the timeframe for the cause of death, though. There's a lot of shit that can only be speculated. But I'd wager that if you were clever enough about it, you could probably find a way to make the above work.
