You can level up and gain new gears and abilities as you play Last Stand
In Skirmish, you have multiple subfactions defined by heroes. SM has 4 heroes, Ork has 3 etc

Every faction is stupid.

My friend told me and showed me some screenshots. A lot of stuff in last stand is not unlocked for this build. Dont know if they had levels in dow2 because I never played it, but having it boosts replayability massively like SC2's co-op. You can have 3 players in last stand. Performance wise it's not great.
