I was listening to an old episode of GameSpot's Hot Spot podcast from 10/26/2005.They were reading an article about Nintendo basically admitting that the GameCube massively underperformed. The tone was weird, you had Jeff Gerstmann laughing at the host for going all in on the GameCube at the start of that generation. They were suggesting that Nintendo might pivot to being a game only publisher on consoles.Was it the success of the DS and the Wii that sort of smoothed over the money side of the Cube? Everyone seems to love the thing now, but in the moment, was the GameCube considered a failure?

PS2 was the DS of consoles. Cheap, inexpensive, bigass library, everybody knew a guy who would modchip it for you and you could buy copied games at car boot sales for a couple of quid. Perfect console for working class people who were the majority audience

It wasn't as huge of a profit as they anticipated, where they intended to sell around 50 million units by 2006, but only came up to 20 million. There was not a distinction between resolution, fidelity, and art style like today; it was all graphics. The bit wars evolved into which console had the best graphics and the general consensus was that console gaming should be (and largely was outside of the early Gamecube titles) moving toward "better graphics" and the genres that were relevant would adapt or die. It's why the PS2 stayed relevant even though it was still the weeb console of choice. I can remember the Budakai series being the first games that I encountered which showed cel shading could work in 3D games. They actively tried to look like the source material instead of photorealistic.
