It's why Cloud failed the screening for the SOLDIER program in the first place. He literally wasn't psychologically stable enough to handle the JENOVA cells. Hojo and the other scientists went into depth in their dialogue and notes about how even the slightest problems with one's mind could allow for JENOVA to take control over the subject. Or influence them, and even force monster-fication on the person. It's also somewhat implied due to lifestream and/or mako shenanigans, Cloud's mind/body are constantly being shielded/protected by Zachs, and possibly even Sephiroths and Angels, souls/memories. But who knows what Hojo really did to Cloud and Zach during those 4 years of experimentations. Or what the hell happened to Sephiroth while he was in the lifestream.All we really know is Cloud is schizo, but not completely gone mentally. Which is why everything he perceives, claims to know, or say should be taken with grain of salt. And/or a bit of skepticism. (Not trying to dog on Cloud btw).Anyways corrext me if I'm wrong about any of this, as this is just my understanding of the story so far.
