ng cycles seem to power up the enemies, so i was trying to figure if that setting can be used on its own. ng+ does not seem to be combo of modifiers on its own, but works independent of your other modifiers. the combat scale is a whole different modifier, that seems to scale the overall number distribution between levels. then there is the setting that removes bone up, but changes your stats on the fly depending on which area you are. then there is setting to randomize enemy attack and defense levels it seems. level up enemies seems to change enemies to their strongest color variant.

And judging by the order of locations during the credits the intended order is probably crypt->swamp->septemburg-Beach->coltrane peak->mirror.
And to be fair septemburg and orrery did account for the majority of deaths in my run but it never felt unfair. though i may just be a glutton for punishment.
And it also didn't feel like i was crazy overlevelled for the rest of the game.

Like you can argue that all of the organic bits are still all active, sure, but the thing is riddled with mutant parasites, its body is being carved away by the miners, its body is completely immobile, its brain (which is effectively the "Dreadworm" itself) has separated from the body and can operate as an independent unit itself separated as it is.
The Dreadworm is basically just the brain, and its body is the rotting carcass who's lower functions are still operating as its decomposing.

Classic Castlevania since Mina takes a lot of its flavor and combat philosophy from them. CV1 and Bloodlines are my personal favorites and CV3 has a lot of cool ideas if if you can put up with its level design.
I don't actually care for Rondo that much outside of the music and visuals
If you haven't played the Oracle Zeldas those are also worth playing. All that said, it's not really the kind of game you need a lot of prep for.

I've done six playthroughs and gotten all the achievements. I've also made sure in three of those that I used all three of the starting weapons. Whip was the most beginner friendly. Hammer was the best overall in terms of hitbox and damage. Knives I just finished a playthrough with and still am hard-pressed to justify their existence. The actual key to the "Soulslike" label is intent. A game can clearly be trying to lift from the Souls games. Looking at any popular soulslikes and you can see when something is directly lifting something from a Souls game.
The most Mina has done is lift the corpse run mechanic based on losing your money, and made it more forgiving by allowing you to die multiple times before losing it (and in some cases, you could die infinitely and never lose it). This alone does not make it a Soulslike, because Shovel Knight also has a more forgiving corpse run mechanic based on losing your money and nobody ever said Shovel Knight was a Soulslike. If anything, when people noted this at the time of Shovel Knight's popularity, people found it neat that a core mechanic of the Souls games was becoming standardised to make death have more consequences than losing your time.

It makes sense in this context since it shares a lot of mechanics as Dark Souls. When you rest at the underground base, enemies and obstacles mostly respawn. When you die, you have to reclaim your loot from where you died or you'll lose all of your currency. MtH is more forgiving in giving you freebies (sparks) before you lose any currency and you also have the opportunity to spend all your cash before running out on your last life.
My description of it is a mix of GBC Zelda, Castlevania, and Dark Souls.

If you want to get really into intent, then yes the devs were almost definitely taking the corpse run mechanic from Souls games, because they were absolutely popular at the time, to the point people made that comparison with the death mechanic instantly. I don't think this alone makes something a soulslike, because that mechanic alone did not define Dark Souls.
By that metric, Hollow Knight should be a Paper Mario-like because it shares the same badge system, Mina should be a Zelda 2-like because of its specific type of levelling system, Every turn based RPG should be a Dragon Quest-like, every monster recruiter should be a Pokemon-like, and every FPS should be a DOOM-like.
But that's not how these labels work, we have terms for popular games that defined a particular genre, one of which is called a Roguelike. That genre has been diluted so bad that people have been arguing that games like The Binding of Isaac is actually a Roguelite because they believe the purity of a roguelike comes from having no meta progression. You're basically arguing from the opposite end with corpse runs, but the problem comes from the fact Dark Souls wasn't defined purely by its corpse runs.
Either way, the point is that sharing one mechanic shouldn't equate to being given an entire genre label. How far are you willing to push this definition anyway? Is Rain World a Soulslike? You do have a corpse run mechanic there, but it only happens if you ate a Karma Flower, which isn't currency, but it is a resource you expend to your benefit in the Watcher DLC. Karma Flowers can also be exchanged for items. Is that too much of a stretch for a Soulslike?

I don't remember if it's required or not. But here's some tips:
Tunneling Codex lets you cross any body of water a LOT easier (you can never drown if you keep digging). It won't help you while holding the head, but you can get back easier when you fail.
You can throw the head at switches.
You can throw the head at the annoying green Phanto fuck chasing you to temporarily make it harmless
Git Gud at jumping just around a corner and you can take shortcuts.

it was a mostly solid experience with a few frustrating things here and there. the navigation was good but inconsistent, the difficulty likewise. I felt like even though the game tried incentivizing using multiple weapons, I always returned to the whip. I thought the art and sound was good. I did not like that the ending was sort of depressing.
overall I thought it was an 8/10 game. good, but I would wait for a sale unless you really want to play it

what's some grievances for you?
I can't really think of much besides wanting to be able to carry a second weapon around like how you can eventually carry 2 sub weapons.
But seeing how some people have like 30 deaths in a run while i have 70 without getting overly mad and blaming the game i think i have a high tolerance for self inflicted suffering.

I want to preface this saying I absolutely hate clunky controls. Like I cannot play Castlevania 1 for long enough to beat the first level without wanting to throw my controller with how stiff that game is.

So The stiffness of Mina is a HUGE problem for me. Especially when you have end lag that locks you in to your facing after the animation has finished. I've been attacked from behind because after a strike with the whip or hammer, I press up and strike and she just whips down.

The main defensive tool having such a long wind up is also REALLY bad. It either creates tight attack windows, or just makes a lot of hits feel like BS when you're smacked right before tunneling. It also makes dodging a bitch.

The healing mechanic does not pair well with the many trap/hazard heavy sections of the game. Most hazards I just find really unfun. Water is mostly just pits, throwables in septemburg are bland. The greenhouse is fucking abominable.

The rafters right after the greenhouse can also get fucked, as can the auto-scroller. I want to especially call out the exploding bats in the rafters. Fuck them, fuck whoever made them. Fuck anyone who doesn't hate them. And I wish death upon anyone who puts players in cramped areas with fucking explosives and puts enemies you can't fucking damage in a game where your health regen is reliant on damaging enemies.

The scaling sections are also fucking annoying. They aren't esepcially hard, but they control like absolute shit.

Also, the overheal shouldn't be a trinket, especially not when the damage is dealt to both health and plasma.
