I played normal mode. The first alpha wrecked my shit, took like 10 tries. But that practice helped me improve because I beat most of the new monsters on my first try after that, including bosses. I genuinely felt that they should've made the some of the sidequests a lot more lighthearted, like the sidequests in the OG Nier where you have to find some dude's son who ran away only to find out he ran away so he didn't get caught up in his family's criminal enterprise or the one in Automata where you rescue a little girl machine and 9S gets roped into a birds and the bees talk.


All the sidequests are either end up with someone dying or with a neutral conclusion. I get the ones with the more important NPCs having some drama to them, but some of them should've had more funny rather than macabre endings.

I personally did not expect much from the story (although I found a lot to like in it) and I think that a lot of people overrate the importance of a story in a video game if it's fun to play, but a fun game with a great story does elevate the experience. It also makes the price of admission feel worthwhile, especially since full priced games feel so expensive these days.

That's part of why a game like Stellar Blade is successful at only a few million copies sold. Two post-apocalyptic desert areas allows for a lot of repurposed assets. It's not hard to imagine that adding a forest biome would've required a lot more time and resources, which would've been taxing for the first console-quality game for the studio.

But they did designed them differently. Gameplaywise, the first desert was more of a metroidvania with specific paths and unlockable shortcuts, where as the second one was more open world where you could go in any direction you liked with points of interests scattered about.

I'm sure they'll address this issue in the second game as the first was a big commercial success for them and they seem to be addressing a lot of the complaints people had about the first game. But you gotta wonder how many different "biomes" we'll get in a city setting. Or maybe there'll be more than just the city that we'll be playing in.

Because like >>741188056 said, a good story isn't necessary to make a good game, but a great game with a good story makes the game much more worthwhile than a great game with a decent story (or outright bad one). Arcade games only needed to wordy about mechanics since they were by their nature limited experiences that you were expected to beat in 30 minutes and likewise 6th gen action games were more worried about having a solid mechanical foundation rather than their story.

Now that most of that is crystallized and devs can make a game experience that is mechanically fun to play, story is a big hook to actually get you to buy it. No one will waste their time on a game with an especially shallow story, which strangely enough, I've found ties into how mechanically sound a game is most of the time. Movie games really suck not just because they have no gameplay (but that is one of the most primary factor as to why they do), but because they have to rely on emotional manipulation to get you to care about the characters and the world rather than actual gameplay exploration and interaction that most games would have you do.

I don't care about any of the characters or the world in a movie game like Les of Us or Mom's a Whore since I'm just passively absorbing their travels and only act when the game tells me to. Meanwhile, even in an action game like the DMC games, Nier games, Bayonetta, Bloodrayne, Stellar Blade, the original GoW trilogy and Ascension and pretty much any action game, the story motivates the action and the stage where it takes place.

The story doesn't have to be Ancient Greek literature levels of great, but it should be good enough to compel actual action in game. The story is just an element that adds to the gameplay feedback loop in a positive manner, in a good game at least.

Who knows? I had a couple of ideas of where a sequel could go based off of the endings, but what Shift Up has shown off so far has me totally stumped. I've kind of started believing what another anon said in these threads that BR will be kind of a soft reboot. So, maybe it'll be set like 100 years after the events of Stellar Blade or something so there'll be something connected to the first game, but it'll be set so far away that everything will mostly be a fresh setting. Heck, there may not be a Mother Sphere in BR.

I found the difficulty was mostly fine in the beginning and end, it was the middle that was a bit too easy.
Either way, you can challenge the bosses again any time you want via the boss rush mode, which is actually one of my favorite features in the game. It lets you set the difficulty and also your gear level.
It lets me enjoy the boss fights more than the base game.

I dunno. I've recently tried out their mobile game, Nikke: Goddess of Victory. It's actually kinda interesting.

It kind of leverages its ecchi softcore hentai designs for an artistic purpose. An artistic purpose that is clearly secondary to its commercial purpose, which is to act as a selling point, but it's also clearly self aware of how ridiculous its character designs are. And I don't mean "self-aware" in the sense of poking fun at it, but in the sense of treating that objectification as a core theme. Its cast of collectible waifus in loosely military themed fetish wear are battle androids (with the minds of real women) and most of the games story arcs explore their status as a dehumanized underclass in a militarized, post apocalyptic society, sort of a Terminator setting where robots have taken over the world and humans live in underground shelters.

It's still sexploitation and, at least from what I personally played of it, never really manages to transcend its status as such, but goes to some length to inject some actual pathos.

I hope Stellar Blade 2 can do the same. I found the first game extremely bland. The only aspect of it that I liked was the way all those tight spandex clothes you could put on Eve had some flavour text of all those brands who manufactured them, suggesting a world where there's a merge between high fashion and combat gear, which I found kind of interesting. It made me wonder what that society that dispatches super soldiers that look like K-Pop idols in designer clothes to fight monsters on a ruined earth is actually like. We never learn much about it. But it would be interesting if they explored it.

Nta but they are similar in premise, but when you actually discuss the story and concepts involved, they're plenty different. NA is about aliens and humans fighting as a backdrop, both creating machines and androids to fight a proxy war but the twist is that both their masters have been dead for centuries or more. The story is also about 9s' obsession with 2b, not knowing that he had been killed by 2b, then 2e and replaced multiple times for closesly knowing the truth. In Nier Automata, humanity is truly good for good and it's about robots trying to know what being human actually feels like and 9s undergoes all of that throughout the game, fear, happiness, love, pain and madness. It's a story that explores the human condition.

By comparison, Stellar Blade is more like Terminator where man's folly with technology leads it to destroy himself, first with the creation of Mother Sphere, who he thought would help mankind but instead deemed them obsolete and just like Skynet decides to eradicate them and replace them with machines. Then fast forward into the future, Eve is given a choice to completely erase humanity and give the reins of the future to androids or give humanity a second chance in the game of natural selection. It also throws in some conflict about religion somewhere but it wasn't really explored that much.
