>Longer development cycle than BotW>Finally comes out>Forgotten in less than a year>Just the announcement of OoT remake completely overshadows it, permanently buries any small relevancy it had left with the fanbaseWhy did it fail?
Because it was a rehashed and retconny mess that disregarded a ton of the series’ lore (didn’t even have the freaking Triforce!) and contradicted a lot of what BotW established and set up, and didn’t even have Link and Zelda together the whole game and playable co-op like lots of people speculated.
>>741195950Plus it turns out that the whole story might have been lazily outsourced.
>>741195274All they needed to do was not reuse the same maps as BOTW and give it a new story but instead they decided to go with BOTW again.
>>741195274TotK was Fujibayashi not giving a fuck while being all Focus, L, about "fun mechanics" for the whole development. He might have laid down an initial pitch but yeah they went KoRn See You on the Other Side with the narrative in this one. The company was "Qalia Writers", who probably made the Goat men.I have a feeling it's an anime writing firm that's known for some kind of popular recent anime, and Nintendo marketing might've pushed for it because of the typical "Those guys are really good at what they do, check it out!" mentality that overruns marketing.IMHO Nintendo has been drenched in a disgustingly corporate "marketing" vibe since the late Switch 1 era. The new CEO is really starting to infect the company with his Sales & Finance background.
>>741196216>The new CEO is really starting to infect the company with his Sales & Finance background.I was calling him out for a while, I even called the Switch 2 being underwhelming but I didn't think it'd be that rough. I'll wait and see how OoTR does but if that doesn't push TotK numbers at least, Smash is their final trump card. Either that or an all new Mario and I expect Odyssey HD or so to be announced instead. Just a heads up.
kys hypefaggot
>>741195274Because Fujibayashi is an ideas guy with lacking communication who can't coordinate an entire project with modern team sizes, and the team that Aonuma built up over the years is generally incompetent but willing to go along with stupid ideas and not tattle to their superiors about obvious problems (basically the same dynamic he is trying to build with Grezzo based on their statements about EoW about his top-down mandates). So this game was likely just developed since the release of Skyward Sword, but never actually coalesced into a full game until outside factors like the earlier Switch launch actually forced the issue and they brought in outside help to put together BotW with the assets that he produced for the project.BotW performed well, so they let him continue fucking around with the game, but of course it continued to go nowhere until they forced the issue again with TotK which is still kind of unfinished and riddled with placeholders.
>>741197741Ruined my entire first playthrough. I refuse to use it in my second.
>>741197934I have not played the game. How did it ruin it?Tell me.TELL ME
>>741198016As soon as you have like 3 or 4 batteries the Hover Board becomes the best vehicle in the game. It doesn't take a lot of parts so you can save the design and not worry too much. It makes any other build in the game useless.
>>741195274maybe aonuma should've made a good game
>>741198016To expand movement options you're given the ability to build contraptions and vehicles out of props, like in Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts or Garry's Mod. That specific combination, two fans and one steering stick, provides an extremely efficient flight option that costs almost nothing to make and is highly controllable too. It's practically a jetpack. It's so good that it renders most other movement options obsolete. You don't need to use planes, rockets, hovercraft, cars, you can just spawn in the hoverbike and fly over everything. No need to land and fight enemies, mine ore, use the rocket towers, ascend with balloons or the Ascend magic power, it breaks the entire game in two.
>>741195274That's a beautiful 30m copies sold failure, anon!
>>741198143>>741198193You have now told me.I have acquired the information I was after. And this conversation is complete.
>>741197741>>741197934I don't regret using it constantly at allI had already explored BotW Hyrule, doing it again was a chore so having a way to just fly from A to B was appreciatedI had no interest in the nuts and bolts bullshit so don't care that the bike made everything else obsolete, I was never going to fuck with any of that anyway. I'd have preferred a new game with a new map where the main mode of travel was horse riding instead of having horses be completely useless since you need vertical mobility to get anywhere
>>741199149play a good exploration game instead of ubislop then
>>741195274To some people it's better than BotW thanks to the new content and adding some extra tension and strain to mechanics so resources are more valuable and necessary. But, for most people it was just kind of, "We waited several years for this shit?" Especially the people that played Breath shortly beforehand to prep for Tears, because of how much is pretty much retreaded and 1:1. It's actually baffling that such a game could get made in such a fashion and throw sky islands and an underground on top with building puzzles and pretend to be a completely new thing.
>>741195274this flop of a slop was forgotten in like 3 days lmao
>>741195274Major reason is because Anouma promised he had taken critisms to heart and fixed them for Totk...and didnt>Only 1 of the 4 dungeons is actually good, with 1 of them only being hyped up by the lead up instead of the dungeon it self>Story is just as fucked as BotW, if not more so because of retcons and timeline fuckeryand thats just the tip of the issues>New maps are hyped for yearsTheyre fucking emptier than the main overworld>support characters from first game are now psuedo party membersAbilities are a complete downgrade from the first game and a clusterfuck to control>entire game is built on minecraft mechanicsis fun for the first 3 hours until you get the autobuilder and rehash the same 4 designs for the rest of the game because the world is empty and you just want to get from point A to B as efficiently as possible>Fuze mechanic takes away anxiety from using specific weapons Accept most are ugly as fuck now so you still wind up hoarding the same 2 or 3 swordsand to top it off, the one thing that could have saved it...the lack of continuity makes revisiting certain places and npcs VERY underwhelming...to the point it doesnt even makes sense which just makes seem like a genuine lazy oversight rather than intentional bullshitery on anoumas part.
>>741197741A work of art.

>>741195274>same map as the first game, with relatively minor changes >sky islands are the same few templates with minor variations >depths is mostly empty - lighroots, yiga bases, mining stations - repeatIt's a shame because i would argue that actual mechanics of the game are a huge improvement over the first game, but it really needed a unique map. I could probably forgive the sky and depths if the overworld was new
>>741195274>same map>sky islands are seriously lacking>depths are a joke>barely any new enemies>dungeons aren't much better than divine beasts>gmod shit while technically impressive doesn't belong in fucking zelda>weapons still break but now you can glue rocks to rusty swordsIt sucks.
Oh it also got rid of the motorcycle, fucking retarded.
>>741195274If it was forgotten then why do you keep bitching about it.Game was fun. People beat game. People move on to new game.
We had this thread last week already.Unfortunately I agree that it's a failure gameplay-wise.Technically it's a masterpiece and that achievement can't be overstated. I really wish there just was some more harder, more meaningful content to do. BotW sits much better in my memories. I might actually replay it soon, since I just goit a Switch 2. Or at least partially replay.
>>741195950>GameXplainOf all the people who criticized it I did not expect Zelda's #1 shills to be among them. Kind of insane how much people disliked this game. This is a bit of a tangent but it really shows how much Skill Up has become an industry plant by becoming an ad for every single mega open world game out there while shitting on games with more classic design. If it's got Open World checklists in the description, you can bet your ass he will "very strongly" recommend it while completely ignoring their shortcomings.
>>741195274reheated leftovers of an already shit "game" (glorified tech demo)
better tutorial islandbetter powersbetter dungeonsbetter bossesbetter ganon fightbetter spectacle fightThe only thing BotW did better was the oppressive atmosphere which goes away the second you learn how easy it is to parry the lasers
>>741199528It's crazy how all of the new Sage abilities are worse than the Champion abilities >Gerudo went from a powerful AoE electric attack to an electric arrow >Rito went from a really helpful ascension into the air to a weak gust of wind that slightly pushes you forward >Goron went from a great shield ability to launching a canonball when driving stuff>Zora went from an arguably broken heal to probably the worst ability in either game
Caves were fun. It should've added underwater stuff though.
>>741203969The guardians were also a lot cooler than the lame little robots
>>741196216>>741196938I'm really glad that more and more people are starting to wake up to Furukawa's bullshit and shortcomings. People tried to pin the blame on Doug Bowser but he's only a symptom of the core Furukawa problem. It was Furukawa's decision to make every Nintendo IP another BotW clone and now that that's not working he's trying to go for the "muh realism" movie games approach that Playstation is famous for. The man's creatively bankrupt and is only trend chasing. I don't even think the retard realizes that people saw that Focus, M meme ironically. Also, when I saw all of those Switch 2 controversies near the launch of it, I immediately recognized whose handiwork that was.
>>741195274turns out people like zelda for sense of adventure and discovery, exploring new world maps and handcrafted dungeons, not for toying with lego robot penises made out of duct taped crap in a recycled empty map
>>741204085>replace an intense creative developer like Iwata with a money accounting guy>money accounting guy just tells devs to do what sells which is open world and making moviesMakes sense to me
>>741199149Speaking of horse riding, it's kind of insane that they kept horses but removed the QoL that the BotW dlc had. So not only are horses redundant due to Ultrahand, but they're still a pain in the ass to use.
>>741195274>a game lauded for it's exploration >developers basically forget that the concept of a cave exists, except for 2 empty small crevices with a shrine in them >you can see every basic enemy type within 2 hours and everything else is a recolor >go to death mountain, and instead of dodongos you see fire versions of the same enemies elsewhere in the game >literally only 3 miniboss type with different recolors
TotK fundamentally misunderstands what people liked about BotW. Nintendo saw people posting clips online about the wacky physics and solving puzzles in jank ways and thought that was what people loved about BotW, when in reality it was the world and exploration, interacting with the wacky mechanics was just an extension of that love, not the core of it.
>>741204085>make every Nintendo IP another BotW cloneI'm not really sure what you mean.
>>741204085Why would the American nintendo president have much influence over the japanese company anyway? He isn't overseeing development, only localisation right?
>>741195274I loved TotK and think it's the best Zelda ever made. One think the BotW duology did well is giving a lot of meaning to singular items, as opposite to ocarina-likes that had you use item once(and even then it wasn't fun) and never again. Also it actually threated story and characters with respect they deserved, making ganondorf actually epic, instead of a cringe inducing tryhard like in old games
>>741196216>>741196938>>741204085Is it really true?
>>741204296Well said, Aonuma probably thought people loved BOTW for the physic puzzles and thought making a whole game of that would be what people wanted.
>>741204256this. Totk feels like actually completed botw with all the caves and new enemies. And weapon crafting just beting great.
>>741204296>>741204365If they set a new game in a new map BUT added no new mechanics, you would realize just how boring that exploration is second time around.
>>741204503>If they set a new game in a new map BUT added no new mechanics, you would realize just how boring that exploration is second time around.Ok but nobody said they shouldn't add any new mechanics, just that a sequel that reuses the same map when the whole appeal is exploration is fucking shit
>>741195274A retread of a popular game is doomed to forever live in its shadow rather than be its own thing. No one sees TotK for its own merit. They just see it as BotW2
>>741204661I saw it as a replay of BotW.
>>741204564but the sequel completely changed the world, added billion new things to find and changed the states of every settlement and npc. This is like coming to an old town 10 years later and seeing everything that changed, except there are also mysterious sky malls hanging above it.
>>741204564And I'm pointing out how this idea of exploration is boring when you know what to expect. They could have added 1 or 2 new mechanics for a new game but that would still be boring. That's why Nintendo focused on mechanics more than making a new map.
>Comes out>Forgotten in less than a yearNot even shitposting. This was a mistake and one caused by BotW and TotK.Oh and Metroid Prime 4 too, except not even a year, just 6 months.
>>741204697if anything that's even worse
>>741204661Quite the reverse. I see BotW as a prototype for TotK the same way Return of Samus walked so that Dread could run.
>>741204812>telling Nintendo devs to spend 6 years making another open world game after the success of BOTWThat is the issue there, not every game needs to be open world and Nintendo's talents in making tight gameplay levels is lost through open world design.
>>741204812it's a forza clone
>>741204831 (me)Meant Samus Returns. Sorry guys, I had a better game on my mind.
>>741195274I said it before and I'll say it again: Building was a shit gimmick. Depths were half baked. Sky was half baked. There's a ton of improvements but overall TotK is like BotW but with a bunch of random mods installed.
>>741205309at least it baked the rest of the stuff, cause everything in botw was half baked
>>741204661>>741204697>>741204831BotW was likely a placeholder they put together from whatever was "done" 1-2 years before release so that they could have a game for the Switch launch.Based on the BotW concept art, TotK is ostensibly the fully developed game, but for the same reason that they felt like they had to rush out a placeholder, it still doesn't feel finished and arguably just feels more bloated. It was never the intention to just retread the first game, it's just that they never really had any direction, so they walked the path of least resistance longer.>>741204812>>741204860You're putting the cart before the horse. Open world is pursued by grifters and those who can't condense their ideas into a tight game.
if I hadn't played botw before, i would like totk as much as i like botw right now. I dont even care about the mechanics or whatever. the problem is that after 6 years and with a prebuilt engine, map, models etc. essentially everything already having been made, this is all they could make? for me it felt more like a dlc for botw. i couldnt even finish it as there was zero challenge, every shrine gets solved by rocket shield and enemies are no problem due to the over abundance of weapons.
>>741205945the "every shrine gets solved through exploits" criticism is so weird to me, cause i'm used to soulsfaggy/minmaxy/rpg ways of trying to beat everything the intended way to get the most out of content.
Idk. BOTW feels like it has some heart at least, however controversial it is among the fans these days. It wasn't a perfect game but it has something going for it with its nature simulator approach that lends a unique gaming experience. TOTK is so obsessed with the nuts and bolts shit that it forgets what even made BOTW halfway enjoyable
No windbombing = no interest
TotK has high highs and lower lows. BotW doesn't really have any peaks to speak of other than the opening and it's bosses suck. They're weird games in the series.
It's refreshing to see a /v/ thread that deeply analyzes why a game was disappointing instead of just calling it shit
>>741206165NTA but it's weird to me too except that I like solving a puzzle in my own practical way.
>>741206727People have been putting the Wild games under a microscope for years anon. There have been tons of threads discussing the flaws of the Wild era with shit posting. Sometimes it easier to abbreviate ones words if once you've broken down the same criticisms over and over again.
>>741206916Without shitposting*
I'm not really sure what they were thinking making a Zelda game all about cars, and I still haven't gotten around to playing it, even though I do own it.

>>741199329The only thing I truly liked what TotK did was the caves/wells that were added, which I wish were in BotW. I don’t care about the Depths, though I did enjoy wandering about in there. >>741196035The whole thing of the memories being repeated but they didn’t anticipate them playing out of order made no sense. The whole point of it in BotW was each location had a memory important to Link/Zelda. In TotK it’s just random tears telling a broken up flashback story that had no relation to the location. This helps explain wtf happened when there’s no actual script director, so the devs just repeated BotW’s design.
>>741208519depths is fine the first time but after that it's just suffering
>>741208564It’s funny, the entire field being flipped didn’t need to happen for the story. Could’ve been 1/4th the size to justify its story use. It hate it in retrospect because it’s the devs meeting a quota of “we need to make the new game bigger than the last one”. And I fear that’s gonna be their mindset forever now, just constantly trying to one-up and dev time gets worse and worse.
>>741195274They put a ton of effort into perfecting all the crazy mechanics, which are impressive, but they barely designed any interesting or complex scenarios/puzzles for you to test your creativity with those systems. It wants you to make your own fun with ultrahand, but this is an adventure game not a pure sandbox and I need something to spur my creativity to actually engage with this system beyond the most basic levelThe whole game feels like a giant waste of potential, made worse by the story sucking zelda away yet again rather than have her and link interact more frequently in their adventure and build their relationship for once, plus the tears don't really work as storytelling this time around unless you get them in order. This game was a chance to build on botw's sparse writing but it's extremely similar, which makes it doubly worseThe dungeons are a step in the right direction stylistically, but are far simpler and less interesting than the divine beasts, which had the novelty of feeling like giant moving puzzles. If each beast had a more unique interior art style, they would blow the totk dungeons out of the water. Every dungeon ended just as I was starting to get into it, and I was left wanting much more but not in a good wayAlso with the the hylian hood clips massively through the leather shoulder armour on the champions tunic, which is fucking atrocious for the DEFAULT SET ON THE BOX
It was kino.
>>741209756It had its moments but the main feature of the game killed the immersion. Not only with the jarring style of the ancient tech, but the deep limitations it has, and the lag.

Is it true, bros?
Can we talk about the OoT Remake here or do I make a new thread
>>741211354Not much to talk about.Seemed very HIRE THIS MAN.
>>741211390I don't know I think it looks pretty nice, see
>>741211354I'm interested in seeing what they do with the gameplay. That web page metadata leak describing "timeless gameplay" or whatever certainly made it sound like they left the gameplay intact instead of taking the Resident Evil route of changing the gameplay. But also who knows, it could mean anything.
One issue I seemed to have is that I felt no urge to face ganon at all.Maybe it's because there's no endgame cycle, defeating ganon changes nothing. With the divine beasts and side quests at least it feels like it influences the world but with ganon this isn't the case. More or less understandable but if there was at least something after ganon, be it just the black mist and malice disappearing, I'd probably feel more rewarded.
