Despite the difficulty, people gravitate to them because you have the freedom to build what you want, the freedom to choose what weapon to main, the freedom to go where you want in ER's case. While action games give you a specific set of tools without much in the way of customization and ask the player to master them. That's almost the same difference between classic FE and the newer more RPG focused entries. Classic FE asks you to use the limited sources you have to master it while newer FE wants you to build everything to your liking. So of course the newer games will be more popular. But does this mean the classic formula is objectively worse? Is Elden Ring just a better game than DMC3 or Ninja Gaiden Black? I think it'd be ludicrous to say that. They both have their merits but I'm saddened that one form of design is eating away at the other just like action game fans are always angry at how dominant soulslikes have become. And the suggestion that they make a sidegame or make more AW is unfortunately not an answer. We've long passed the era where companies can have side projects running alongside their main entries. If this was 15 years ago, we could have console FE be RPG focused and handheld FE be strategy focused but that isn't feasible anymore in the current landscape.

I don't think FE makes for a good strategic experience, and trying to cut everything down to give it the kind of Advance Wars-esque goal is counterintuitive to its ideas of personal expression. It is why I don't miss the Ranking Systems, the game really has no room to judge me for poor play when you expect me to guess when a 1% crit will kill me. In the same game where the strongest unit can get completely and randomly screwed out of their key stats and benchmarks.If we are going to keep these ideas for the sake of Fire Emblem, then it makes more sense to remove the limitations of player expression and abilities to build around/negate these roadblocks over just accepting and praying they don't ruin their will to keep playing. If FE is about the characters and the various crises the plot and gameplay scenarios create for them, then let me play with the characters more. Let me shape how the experiences shape them.
