What distro is /v/ running for Linux gaming?Cachy? Bazzite? Ubuntu?what's your experience been with Linux now
Nope. Everytime I think about switching to Linux I remind myself of all the shit that needs layers of hacks and copium because it won't work the same as on Linux. And even games marked as gold/platinum on ProtonDB are attached with "as long as you do a bunch of le tinkering, also you need to tolerate cracklig audio and visual glitches and gamepad problems".

Games just work most of the time without any tinkering, you use Proton-GE or Proton-CachySometimes niche and old things can still be a big pain
Windows is still better for gaming unless you're on AMD
>>741278451>Too hacky use Windows insteadkekWindows doesn't support newer filesystems and it handles peripherals as if it was still expecting PS/2 and serial connections. You need to hack Linux on top of Windows with something like WSL2 or Cygwin to get anything approaching modern functionality and newer Windows versions keep dropping support for legacy Windows hardware and software, so Linux is starting to handle those better than Windows does.Windows is decades of unmaintainable spaghetti codebase piled on top of NT.

>>741278096I'm a person of average intelligence and Linux is for smart people so I never bothered.
I installed Cachyos on a secondary ssd and the installer deleted all my data on my primary ssd. It was also buggy as hell, the UI was flickering and it failed to download stuff without a terminal command. Other than that the OS itself seems pretty good so far.

I'm running Arch and my experience when it comes to gaming specifically has been alright. There are some eccentricities which affect gaming in particular, though. For example I have to run Rimworld with a monster command to get a good experience.

>>741279693NTFS doesn't get corrupted if you use it on Linux exclusively. There is no point using it over EXT4 or some other better FS, but there are no problems with permissions or corruption using the NTFS3 driver (not ntfs3g/fuseblk) as far as I can tell. Everything I tested works.I don't know about performance, my drive still does about ~200-250 MB/s which is about the most it can do as a mechanical drive.

>>741278096I've not properly touched Linux in 6 years now.I first dipped my toes into the Penguin team with Linux Mint back in 2020, when the "Win7 is... le KILL!!!" fear mongering started and the first games that didn't launch on 7 started arriving on Steam. Decided to try the good ol' Linux Mint and made it look like oldschool Windows. It was honestly a pretty good experience even back then. Gotta remember that Proton (nowadays "Steam Play") had only been rolled out 2 years prior. My hardware was already anemic at that point, but it ran smooth as butter. In the end, I just went back to Windows 7 for the time being. Minor inconveniences, like dragging and dropping pictures into Steam chat window not working were minor inconveniences, but still enough to tip the scales in Windows' favor.Ended up using 7 just fine up until 2024, when MS itself deleted AND prevented me from re-installing a crucial software of theirs that I needed for my work. So gritting my teeth, I installed W10 IOT LTSC Enterprise edition 2021, cracked and hacked it to shut the fuck up. Still using it as I'm typing it; it has received exactly ZERO (0) updated, and I let nothing go in nor out without my personal permission.Wee11 I won't even consider. That piece of shit is a 100% deal breaker, through and through, and fags shilling it deserve a .45 ACP to the dick.

>>741278096>what's your experience been with Linux nowRoughly two years, and it's fine. Steam does most of the heavy lifting anyway.Though I tried to pirate Forza Horizon 6 recently and it just wouldn't launch. Installation through lutris went fine, applying patches through it was a bit awkward, but I just followed the same steps, but it would just exit right away after launching. Then I read a one-off comment on a russian forum that this specific scene release wouldn't work on Linux somehow. I kinda gave up after that because it wasn't worth the hassle. Also, I wanted to have a way to control my CPU fans and it turns out I just can't do it because some chip on my motherboard can't be seen by detect-sensors or whatever. That about sums up the Linux experience; fine until you want to do something less surface level.

Linux takes a lot of effort to get working, including compiling one of ten pieces of software yourself from github and nobody can agree which one is best. Just to get care minimum functionality. You have to learn and use the command regularly. Good luck with that. The compromised AUR packages incident convinced me to switch from CachyOS to Arch due to CachyOS using AUR packages in their repo.. Predictably, the experience is pretty similar and gaming works just fine. Just less handholdy and more reading the wiki to configure things.
>>741278096Been using CachyOS on my old ass laptop that runs as if new back in Win7 days and also on my main computer. Was distro hopping before from Debian to Ubuntu to Mint but there was always some ancient driver or other issues that irked me but so far Cachy has been running great for a year with minor tinkering for laptop and near 0 for main.In daily general use and gaming everything runs faster and better than it ever did on Windows
>>741278096Bazzite. It was kinda ass at first because the audio issues with my DAC would often fuck up.Recently it's been patched and for the most part been usable. Wouldn't have recommended it solely because of audio issues.Emulation still needs some work, even with Emudeck installed.
>>741301478>ubuntu is actively hostileIf anyone was worried about this they would only use parent distros or linux from scratch. But their not because its not true in the first place because that would mean debian is hostile to it and its not. Beyond that I will take a distro with funding over a distro supported by 6 weirdos where quality tapers off a cliff when one of those 6 tards goes nuclear
>>741279457Once in a blue moon, some modding thing or some application just wont work nice on linux with wine. Sometimes its even fitgirl repacks or something, and il just temoparily boot into windows to do it. At this point I should just remove my windows install and use a VM instead because that would save a shit ton of space.
>>741304490Arch is way better than CachyOS, it's not even close. The only problem is that everything has to be set up yourself unlike CachyOS where they make a lot of necessary setup steps for you, and I ain't talking about stuff that's obvious but also non-obvious stuff like split lock detection being turned off. The other side of that coin is an upside, though, Arch doesn't do shit that you don't want it to do either. Which is a problem with CachyOS. I hate their custom wine and proton bullshit.
>>741304892TBF some presets CachyOS comes with are a great convenience. Their btrfs/limine snapshots can be configuring so easily even a baby can do. Not so much so on Arch. But I don't mind. It's a good learning experience being on Arch
>>741305093It's not hard on Arch either, I use Timeshift with GRUB2 for snapshots. I don't know if limine with snapper (which I think cachyOS uses) is better, but honestly I'm not even sure how well the snapshots work because Arch has never ever necessitated for me to boot into a snapshot. The few times I broke it, I just fixed it from chroot instead of wasting time with a snapshot.
For those who think installing Arch is time consuming, check archinstall.

>>741278096Is NVIDIA driver performance still worse than Windows? Fuck NVIDIA
>>741278096I ran Bazzite two years ago when I migrated. I still recommend it for anyone migrating from Windows.Atomic structure affords some peace of mind when learning what's what, and helps recover from complete and total fuck. Just keep the install USB around in case some sort of boot fuck happens so you can get into the live environment.I've since migrated to CachyOS. I would prefer the atomic updates, but haven't had any problems with CachyOS.Only two issues I have really had have been1) remote desktops on Wayland are shit. Gnome RDP finally works. Haven't looked beyond that, and don't want to use Gnome. All third party remote desktop tools are basically kill. No Rustdesk. Sunlight/moonlight. You can use them, but it's such a pain in the ass as to be irrelevant, since you basically need to be remotely connected by some other means in the first place.2) HDR on Steam is still fucked on Wayland. You can HDR in proton. This isn't such a big deal. I typically use Steam Overlay for controller config because steam control API (not steam controlLER) is the bee's knees, but the Overlay is STILL not properly built for Wayland. So it is presently (last I checked) mutually exclusive with HDR on Wayland. Supposedly the overlay was getting updated, and I assumed it would be ready by the time the Gabecube launched, which I also assumed barring AI eating hardware economy the steam machine would have finally launched. But far as I am away, still no fully compatible wayland steam overlay, so still no HDR + controller API.the latter isn't such a big deal given HDR is typically a meme in games, with most being VERY poorly configured/supported. But it would still be nice to get the benefit out of an OLED where it works. I still can if playing keyboard/mouse, or the controller config doesn't matter. But I'm a sucker for gyro mouse control and 90% of games get gyro controller aim either completely wrong, or not at all.

None. Every friend I know that uses linux is also the least technically inclined. Friends that are tech professionals don't use it (except for servers). Also used it all the time on Windows to be fair. For me I needed to manually create registry entries for software on my user account constantly, because retarded Windows software requests admin permissions to install and then creates permissions explicitly in HKCU for some reason which is completely retarded if your admin account and user account are not the same. There was other stuff that you need to fuck with the registry for too, but I was constantly editing it for that specific reason and every other purpose took a back seat.Anyway, if he's using like Ubuntu, Fedora or Mint he wouldn't need to touch the terminal practically at all so even really minor regedit usage would outpace it.
