Are there any good vidya fanfics on AO3?
>>
Fury of the shattered mirror, but its seems to be dead now sadly. Still worth a read.
>>
I wish I had a writefag girlfriend. I mean I'm a drawfag and I'm not good at writing, so we could compliment each other and make a weird comic. I would even draw yaoi for her if she wants it.
>>
>>741294102
What kind are looking for?
Action? Mystery? Comedy? Romance? Smut even?
>>
>>741294102
Only time I gave this site a whirl was when I had some vague interest in Gacha and Vtuber derivative work. Some are alright, but there's a substantial amount of retarded multiverse stuff, futa, omegaverse, and interracial gangbangs. Not really my taste. The Vanilla fluff to loving sex romancefag walks alone...

Aberration by RedXEagl3 is one of the better SIs i've read. Takes an otherwise dumb fantasy game (fe awakening) and makes it into a fully fledged fantasy epic. Sure has it ups and downs, and can be a bit too misery porn with how the author liked to drag the MC through the mud but it was worth it.
Also is finished, like he actually made it to the end. That is always a plus.
Great read, recommended.
>>741296994
Use tags, nigga!
I always make sure to mark ff and mm stuff off so i don't see them.

>>741294102
I don't see the use case for fanfics anymore with LLMs. Interactivity and endless amount of possibilities is just superior
>>
>>741297761
People write because they have fun doing so. And share it because they like it when people also enjoy what they have to say.
From the beginning of time, people have always wanted to tell stories. With characters they don't own has never been a limitation to do so.
>>
>>741297502
I do use tags. It's just funny when I blacklist all the stuff I don't like and the works count drops from, say, 250 down to 20. I just started writing my own stuff...
>>
>>741297668

I'm too autistic for discord. 4chan is the extent of my ability to communicate with other people. This is why my chance of getting a girlfriend is zero percent.
>>
>>741298561
Well that's fair, at least you have escapism.
>>
>>741297979
I guess it makes sense from that perspective. I have more of a consumer mindset on it so i can't relate to that.
>>
>>741298180
>I just started writing my own stuff
Same
Even when I could find stuff I wanted, there was usually something small I didn't like or otherwise something that took me out of all but the best things I read, and I eventually decided to take it into my own hands.

Its nice in a lot of ways like being simply satisfying in its own creation but also by being the change you want to see in the world.
There is not much that feels better than someone commenting on a fic you wrote for that obscure game or a rare pair saying how much they had wishing for a story like yours.

I mostly write for me at this point, just to see if I can get whatever scene or feeling was haunting me onto paper properly. Not really much of a market for implicative stuff or quiet unimportant everyday moments.
>>
>>741296229
My girlfriend is an otaku writefag (himejoshi not fujoshi) and it's really good. She doesn't write a lot of smut. It's mostly adventure fantasy sci fi stuff, like rewriting the plot of an entire game to make it have more unique worldbuilding. I love proofreading her degeneracy and helping her format it. I'd do it even if we weren't dating because helping to create earnest stuff, even cringe stuff, is awesome. The passion and sincerity rub off on you.
>>
>>741294102
How do you even search this piece of shit 99% of it is gay fujo shit written by obese troons or fat women
>>
>>741300003
Fair
It always important to remember to write for yourself at the end of the day.
I will say though that kind of back and forth with other writers/readers has been a great source of external motivation. I was already stepping up my writing this year but it's really kept me going.
Also, I guess it depends on the fandom, but little slice of life everyday moment stuff like that can be pretty popular I thought. I know at least I've really liked some fics like that.
>>741301193
Ah, tha sounds great.
It feels so good to put something stuck in your mind onto paper and then out there even if it's not very good.
I've really come around to liking amateur creative stuff in general.

Imagine writing a story for something you're presumably a fan of, and that is the best you can come up with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXsQAXx_ao0
I've posted some of my stuff before and it went well.
The trick is to make sure to post it in an appropriate thread and not spam it or anything. Most anons are pretty understanding so long as you aren't in a shitty thread.
I wish the fanart threads we had here were more open to fanfic

Not even surprised. From what little I've picked up of SB moderation, the admins/mods of that site are massive fags.
>No, this former adult who's been reincarnated and is currently a teenager who's legally recognized as an adult can't even be mentioned witnessing the sexual acts of others
It's ridiculous. SB is the last place I visit to see if there's anything there that's not on QQ/SV/AO3/FF. I know one of either SV or QQ has a couple AI tags that you can exclusion search (and obviously AO3 as well). Unfortunately, as with AO3, there's no guarantees of proper tagging.

try "The Red Star Beyond Sol", it's a red alert/mass effect crossover starring the glorious eternal soviet union. pretty standard first contact war premise, but the prose nails the soviet communism vibes so very well.

I really enjoyed The Lost Prince, a Sonic fic that crosses over the main series with Undergroud, and finally got finished back in late 2024. Climb Uruk’s wall and walk back and forth! Survey its foundations, examine the brickwork! Were its bricks not fired in an oven? Did the Seven Sages not lay its foundations? One square mile is city, one square mile is orchards, one square mile is clay pits, as well as the open ground of Ishtar’s temple. Three square miles and the open ground comprise Uruk! Gilgamesh failed in his search for immortality, but instead found immortal life in the legacy of Uruk - in urban planning! From the very beginning, the stories we tell, the food we eat, the clothes we wear, it is all the State! Gilgamesh and Phibun and Mussolini - Everything within the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State! It exists within us, it permeates us like the air we breathe. It cannot be escaped.

It's a genius work of horror because sonic doesn't give into it immediately, he tries to resist, but you know that eventually he will rape, so you spend each chapter in fear for when it eventually happens. I didn't even jerk off to it and I read the whole thing, the worldbuilding it does is captivating, there's a cult subplot with Blaze and Silver being raised from birth to have sex with eachother as kids and be prostituted out so they can give birth to a locust antichrist.

A larger frame of reference as foundation. The worst writing you'll ever see, roleplay chat bullshit, is often a product of people miming how other roleplayers write which is often downstream of fanfic and so on. Knowing the dullest archaic classic to okay popular fiction works will help you gauge things better.

i 'member that /k/ used to have a fantasy writefag thread or some shit with worryingly long greentext-only stories, some of them were alright but i think most of them were just "i fuck this mythical creature girl while using my favorite guns to shoot things for over 10k lines of greentext"

>>
>>741310281
Depends on the fandom. You generally either want something with a strong nerd culture (TES, 40k), or something popular with women.
>>
>>741310281
Kudos isn't really an indicator of quality. This isn't the old days of fanficiton.net where eventually the best fics climbed to the top in a long fandom. Lots of fics with lots of attention can be absolute garbage depending on the types of fans that inhabit the fandom.

evocative prose, distinctive and consistent characterization. go read the first few chapters of Virtuous Sons and pay attention to the author's style.
this is also what seperates good, erotic smut from mechanically competent but unerotic smut. writing sex is all in the emotion and sensation, the physicality and spirituality of the act not the dull mechanics of plapping and screaming.
seconding the other anon, the best thing one can do to develop technically is to fucking read moar. see what can be done with the written word and observe how.

Even if you don't like Sonic, this one is pretty good if you are patient enough to wait for the final chapters
https://archiveofourown (DOTORG) /works/47205877/chapters/118940707
>>
>>741310723
I will say though, that evocative prose can easily be a trap in of itself. Sometimes the overall narrative and what you want to say is more important than how it's said. Granted, the better you are the more you can bring that to life but it can be very easy for beginners to get trapped in 'must sound good'.
>>
>>741309806
I imagine there're a lot of things. Off the top of my head, my biggest issues with someone's writing, personally, come when at least one of these is present:
>A feeling of immaturity to the work (e.g., Adult characters as a mority/whole do not behave like actual adults. Or another example, sex scenes aren't believable sex at all and read more like the script from poorly acted professional porn)
>Too much telling, not enough showing OR the inverse. That said, too much showing is preferable to not enough since I can simply skip over sections of information I don't care about, but I can't make up the more important details for your story on my own.
>Characters that behave in unbelievable ways
>Unbelievable dialogue
>Overly quippy dialogue, or as a general rule, characters behaving in cringeworthy manners
>Writing that is grammatically flawed to the point where the writing becomes hard to follow or is just annoying to read
Obviously AI is a huge problem too, but people using AI to write for them aren't writers anyway, so I figured it wasn't worth actually including in the list. Still wanted to address it though.

Something from the technical side that can really set good writers apart from decent writers is the ability to convey tone or emotion through prose. You can describe the way that a long-abandoned manor is spooky at night, but if you can convey a sense of tension and suspense with the way you've written those paragraphs and not just through the words themselves, it will elevate the experience.
>>
>>741309806
Good prose does wonders, I say. Not just describing what happens, but presenting it with an appropriate tone and colorful imagery, having a sense of pacing and flow.
Personally, I love Terry Pratchett's books in this regard, although it's usually comedy for the sake of comedy, he can really deliver a vivid image. Here's a bit from the beginning of Guards! book for example:
>THIS IS WHERE the dragons went.
>They lie . . .
>Not dead, not asleep. Not waiting, because waiting implies expectation. Possibly the word we’re looking for here is . . .
>. . . dormant.
>And although the space they occupy isn’t like normal space, nevertheless they are packed in tightly. Not a cubic inch there but is filled by a claw, a talon, a scale, the tip of a tail, so the effect is like one of those trick drawings and your eyeballs eventually realize that the space between each dragon is, in fact, another dragon.
>They could put you in mind of a can of sardines, if you thought sardines were huge and scaly and proud and arrogant.
>>
>>741311084
Agreed. It's not something that needs to be present throughout the entire work. Prose needs to be pleasant to read, but it doesn't necessarily need to carry impact if the scene doesn't warrant it.
To expound for others: consider how AI likes to use analogy for every-fucking-thing and do its characteristic, haltering writing (She was moving [italicized]. Determined. Powerful.) over the most pointless acts (it also just does a poor job of it). Actually, now that I've brought it up, that haltering writing is the AI overusing evocative prose. So you can probably see how excessive uses of such can be jarring to read and undermine the potential power of using such tools.
>>
>>741309117
Fuck, this is great.
This kind of stuff is hard to do too, you have to really understand how a historical figure acted and was shown and the material your crossing over with and be able to present a crossover that actually works in one way or another.
Incredible

READ YOUR SHIT ALOUD, IF YOU CRINGE, WINCE, BREAK YOUR STRIDE, NEED TO RE-READ THE START OF THE SENTENCE (you will) YOU NEED TO FIX IT, BECAUSE IF YOU CAN'T READ YOURSELF YOUR READERS WILL DROP YOUR ASS
Read a ton of shit. Fiction, nonfiction, who cares
If you can't go on reading something, ask yourself why. The answer will matter to (You), which is where you can start to build something (not necessarily)
Examining works you like goes a long way, but simple rules also go a long way: Don't put in words if they don't serve a purpose. You aren't tolkien. Especially now that everyone has notifications vying for their time, you need to be lean.
And yes, especially for porn, it's 90% in the capacity to invite visceral or emotional contact, and three paragraphs made of 15 synonyms for "Plap" or "suck" is not it

>Don't put in words if they don't serve a purpose
gonna build on this
PACING. beyond the technicals of writing, one of the most important aspects of storytelling is pacing and so many average-to-decent tier fics struggle with it.
in para-to-para and chapter-to-chapter writing you need to shepherd your reader's attention along and keep the narrative focused on what's important. everything the author devotes narrative to should be relevant; original content really struggles with this because it gets caught up in worldbuilding instead of storytelling. every chapter should be accomplishing something, every handful of chapters should be moving the plot forward. treat your story outline like a greentext (every line meaningful), then turn each meme arrow into a chapter.
i'm following a pokemon quest that got bogged down in Eterna Forest for an IRL year, dozens of chapters, and several hundred thousand words. it had some pretty kino moments in there so it wasn't a total waste, but so much more of the actual narrative (ie region-spanning pokemon friendship adventure) could've been covered if not for getting bogged down in the interstitial spaces. two million words into the 'fic and protagonist-chan still has less than half the region's badges; every longform pokemon fic falls victim to this.

>>
>>741313863
So you'd actually recommend slang/"dirty talk" to get the reader in the mood instead of trying to sound fancy?
>>
>>741294102
Yes, depending on what you consider good and what game you look up.
>>
>>741314639
Thing a lot of amateur writers miss is that you can worldbuild by way of the storytelling itself, leaving various things to be followed up with later or just left there. If I had a penny for every John Exposition some of these fics had...

You are insanely based anon. People who write a ton just for the love of the game are really cool in my eyes.
>>
>>741314841
Consistency is more important. You can make a lot of things work if your tone and impact are consistent. Conversely, you can ruin it by jarring your reader out of reading.
Example: if you're using common phrasings and words (nothing wrong with that, Pratchett which people are pointing to ITT is 98% middle-schooler readable and one of the most read author), and suddenly you bust out a
>such was its girth
...thinking it makes you cool and educated, WRONG, it makes you look like a clown who knows one of the most obvious "literary" phrasing in existence and deploys it like it's a marvel, it makes your reader pause and smirk, and that's BAD if your intent is to draw them in. It's MAYBE serviceable if you want to say "This character is a giant twat who talks like an ass", and that's always risky.

One of the most vivid writers I read uses the "spotlight" of narration like an LMG stuck on full-auto, the narration savages everything that gets in the line of fire with gratuitous jeers, but with enough chutzpah, you can pull your reader along - the worst thing you can do is break your own rhythm with a change of tone/vocabulary, unless you're aiming for a very deliberate narrative effect and you're confident you can pull it off.

Every night I make up fanfiction in my dreams. Yesterday I had a captain of a kings army try to propose an alliance with a demon queen(one of the princes tried that but fucked up when he started flirting with her and she turned him into a talking bush). The demon queen liked the captain because he was kind of an autist but nice(think the guy from dragon quest XI) and decided to help because the king promised her some more land.

No, that's not what he's saying, or at least that's not my understanding of what he's saying about porn writing (might be tainted by my own bias and belief which is similar to his). Dirty talk can be just as irrelevant as *PLAP PLAP PLAP* and a dozen other onomatopoeias (which I basically always dislike seeing). When it comes to porn, you need to make the reader able to empathize with what's happening and feel like they're a part of it in some way, not literally, but it needs to connect. They need to be able to visualize the scenario and imagine themselves in it. A bunch of dirty talk and lazily written sounds doesn't achieve that.

I'm partial to breakneck pace. If I feel that I'm meandering for even a second, it's time to fucking go. The best smut always describes to me at least, the foreplay. The subtle intricacies of body movement, the way hands explore the planes of the body, expanse of the neck or jutting of the collarbones.

People underestimate how hot kissing is. Or heck any mouth on skin action. Good smut is like a horror movie, you need the slow languid build up to really get people's motor running.

My favorite fanfics are split between zero hanky-panky relationship slow burns and hardcore ones, and surprisingly, my favorite of the smut kind are at least 50% setup. You need to get a sense of WHY this character is so down bad, and that can be in praise for their desire (the standard case, essentially "shit's hot yo") or the opposite, e.g. because it's a divorcee who hasn't gotten any in forever and suddenly this hot young neighbour is right up in her personal space and not taking "no" for an answer.

Reading more and reading diversely is congruent with improving your own writing. You're exposing yourself to more techniques and more examples of writing from which to base your own style off of (which, for me, occurred mostly naturally rather than deliberately). As for different types of media, I'm not sure how helpful that would be since different formats operate differently. You wouldn't write a play or TV series the same way you'd write a book (typically anyway).

>>741317262
Yeah I'm not pleased about netori unless the guy's a real asshole. As for canon, it's not necessarily an issue for me. The story just needs to be made believable, but often, it's not. Haremshit often correlates to bad writing, in my experience, so it's more of an indicator than a terminal problem in and of itself for me. That said, it's absolutely not romantic, so the story loses that aspect of appeal for me (exception being small-scale yuri "harems" that are, in actuality, more of a threeway/fourway relationship).

Some of the best fics are simply general/all green fics without anything "adult", because they're purely working off being good stories, often with very sober tag lists.
On the other hand, gacha stories are almost universally trash, no matter how many clicks, tags or words they can boast.
In fact, Ao3 very badly needs a "reduce to essential tags" or a "filter every story with more than three lines of tags" to weed out the tumblr "lmao I'm so cooky :)" and inane "tag every pairing when only two are featured longer than a line" story.

There is plenty of "please ship this" bait in modern franchises (that's like 80% of overwatch popularity).
But often the designated ships are the most boring, uninteresting and cookie cutter ones, and it completely smothers a setting's potential. In particular I think of LoL, where the spread of pairings got boiled down to KDA and arcane pairings which are all terrible,

Let's be honest, if you live off a diet of Video Game Fanfiction, Worm is fucking Gilgamesh.

Is it the best thing ever written? No, it's not even the best thing that author has ever written. It's their first work and it shows, but it's still got something special.
>>741321079
Honestly? Just read the first chapter, if it doesn't hook you, you can ask for your $0.00 back.
The audiobooks on spotify are a little spotty in quality, it's a fan project, but most of the chapters I listened to were alright.

i have encountered the occasional gayfic that i thought was quite good, but what i very quickly found was a LOT of it is boring ass seme/uke shit that reduces all the nuance of the relationships down to dominant/submissive even outside of the romance scenes, and if you're not interested in reading about dudes ejaculating the overt horniness in a good portion of them (even when they're meant to be an actual goddamn story and not just smut) can get tiring
don't get me wrong genderswap fics are full of blatant fetishism too, but when you're searching for it you're kinda expecting that to be the case - meanwhile i open one goddamn m/m fic thinking the summary sounds good and chances are one of them's going to be written like they're a woman with a dick anyway with or without a billion lemon-related tags

the main characters are as near and dear to my heart as the undersiders and the lambsbridge orphans combined, I desperately want them to turn out okay.
the kickoff is a little bit hard to follow, you're a little confused for a bit as we establish the setting and the people in it, but once it gain traction and everyone has been established it takes off and never stops.

There's a character who's basically cursed to trip over monkey-paw-tier magic items that grant benefits but fuck you over, essentially collecting and selling SCP items on Etsy. Their life is a tragedy and I love them.

I've read some Worm xovers without reading Worm itself. I enjoyed the one where Darth Vader ends up in Worm (was also my first Worm fic), but I can't say I actually care much for the setting, at least as I've seen it presented the dozen or less times I've read any xovers based in Worm. There was an Omori fanfic named "Drying On The Steps".
Post good ending, Sunny and Basil wake up in the back of a van, on the top of a mountain, outside of some kind of furniture store, in the middle of a blizzard.
What follows is about 40 chapters of two twinks bumping their heads on things and having mental breakdowns.
But my hand to God, the writing was so fantastic that I barely noticed that almost nothing about the plot had progressed in those 40 chapters.
We don't know where they are or who took them there, or why, and just when their friends find one of them, the FUCKING AUTHOR DELETES THE STORY AND THEIR ACCOUNT.

If you're talking about superhero stuff, it's not even that for me (although I would also dislike the constant retconning that goes on in it). I don't know. I guess bluntly, I just think superheros are kind of lame. It's probably mostly the costumes.

Good prose is a meme. Yes, it "exists," but I've seen goobers praise the most dogshit writing in existence as "borderline poetry!" simply because it's published. Just find your own voice. it can work every now and then, but when the whole fandom ends up being mostly comprised of it then it wears itself out quick
one example off my head is attack on titan, i don't know why the fuck you'd want to write those characters outside of their normal context but apparently it's a very popular (and very shit) thing
there's honestly not many i've seen that were actually worth the time reading, they're either meaningless fluff or obvious projection of the writer's life that i'm really not interested in finding out about
>>
>>741323590
Personally, I like enough detail to let me fill in the rest of the image myself. If you have a character trekking through a mountain trail, I don't need graphic descriptions of scenery. Something along the lines of
>He proceeded down the winding forest trail, navigating the variations in terrain with ease while enjoying the brief glimpses of sunlight that poked through the dense canopy as well as the smattering of flowers found on the untouched floor beside him, and it wasn't until midday that he reached his destination.
is very preferable compared to 2-3 paragraphs worth of shit that I'll lose interest in reading after 2-3 sentences. I simply do not give a fuck about the precise arrangement of shrubbery, nor do I want to read a couple sentences about some flowers. Not only that, I'm likely going to have a mental image formed after a sentence or two, and then everything after that will be vying against what's already present in my mind. The exceptions would be more unique settings, areas where the details might actually matter for some reason, or maybe something that's just really fucking cool. I'd read some paragraphs about the exact setup of castle defenses, especially if they're going to become relevant.

Well, ideally, you'd branch out to try other stuff. Combine elements from other writers. Of course, you can stick to a single style to copy forever. But that would make you boring and predictable, making writing and reading miserable in the long run, and probably don't want that.
Writing is iterative.

I've read one(1) single good fic on Wattpad.
Not amazingly well written, but decent enough, with a really good idea backing it up.
Harry Potter, focused on the Wesley Twins initially, who sneak into Dumbledore's office as soon as they get off the train so they can dump a potion in the Sorting Hat to get it drunk and shuffle the sorting.
Harry and Draco are Hufflepuffs, Ron is a Ravenclaw, and Hermione and Neville are Slytherins. I forget the details because it really just wrote key scenes, and don't even know how it resolved the Voldemort plot.
But Year two rolls around, and they decide to do it again, but get caught by Dumbledore, who assigns them detention in the form of teaching him exactly how they brewed the potion.
Then the sorting happens and Luna becomes a Gryffindor, and their new best friend, and I really wish it kept going because that sounds fun as hell.

There's a BotW one where Link begins speedrunning his way to Ganon, eventually going there straight off the Plateau, before Zelda tells him that she's been holding Ganon back for 100 years, she can keep it up for a few more weeks, and he really needs to take time to relax and help other people first.
Again, by Drich, highly recommend.

My second favourite mary sue fanfiction was this Digimon one that was a retread of Adventure but with OCs, 3 of which were goths and were obviously self-inserts. I've written both smut and not and I've had an equal amount of fun doing both. It's all about character exploration, that's the best part.
I don't have much new to show at the moment after I wrote a few ~16k word smut pieces for Silver from Deadlock, but I'm working on a few things. Current primary project is a smut piece for the Feverstone Wilds mod in Vintage Story, featuring a human settler and a roaming faunling trader. They're gonna compare life philosophies as she keeps coming to visit every few months, and eventually realize they're falling in love.
>>741324543
>back when we called them lemons.
It was a different time
>>
>>741327223
Weird. I wouldn't expect an asexual author to be interested in writing smut at all.
Honestly, I've written a little smut, and there's nothing about writing it that I found arousing. Far too much attention is being paid to the way the scenario is going, how the characters are moving, what they're feeling, what adjectives and verbs you want to use so that you avoid repetition and cringeworthy stuff (like flower, lovetunnel, etc.). But when I say a little, I do mean a little. Less than 10k words worth. It wasn't my thing. Maybe with practice, it's easier for people to write it with one hand.

I want to kill the people who recommend "A New Way, A New World." It's a pokemon/horse show crossover fic with a genuinely great premise ruined by the author's desire to focus entirely on pokemon sex and terrible arguments surrounding pokephillia. Terrible because they're always invariably just the anti-pokephilliafags essentially being unironic, over-the-top strawmen characters while the pro-pokephilliafags own them with facts and logic.

The story's Arceus is a walking fallacy

And then there's the spinoffs, this shit got popular enough for other people to make canon spinoffs that feature their own mary sues; there was an event in the original fic where it and all the spinoff fics crossed over and it was everyone trying to out sue each other.

I think it might be cause, since you're familiar with the work and care for it, you're more discerning with it even subconciously and even good stuff is hard to measure up
I recently discovered that, while writing the stuff I want about things I really like can be super hard sometimes, writing about other things I care less for is a million times easier, I think cause I'm not a stickler about details for those properties
This made me open to requests for the first time since I realized they are easy cause of this since I don't feel compelled to write this ultra-faithful, canon-compliant masterwork for them since I care about the requested property's less usually. It helps me cool off between my big works that matter to me more.

I remember that one. That's a good one.
I haven't been back to Shego x Kim stuff in a while. The last time I looked around, I ended up getting burned by one that started out fairly decent but had Shego going and screwing some random dude to try to get rid of her feelings for Kim. Dropped it there. There were some warning signs, but I was really hoping it wasn't gonna pull that kinda shit.

I've read and enjoyed stories about people turning into animals. No, I'm not about to graft fur or undergo snout surgery.

I mean if you feel like telling me if my shit is ass, I'd love to hear. But back when I posted on Spacebattles, even when I could see I was getting people reading NOBODY would comment, even when I dropped asks in the notes for their thoughts.

I've been really impressed with this story about a Twilight Dragon from WoW, eating a paladin's magic and slowly becoming less insane, trying to figure out how to live life and what/who to really fight for
One of few stories I've read that's so good (and explains itself well enough) that I'd unironically recommend it even to people who have 0 familiarity with WoW or Warcraft

>>741329390
>I want feedback so FUCKING BADLY.
Hard to expect that when everyone got too used to seeing artists throwing hissy fits and deleting their stuff over the slightest criticism or drama.

I spend most of my free time basically writing fanfics of a fanfic. I never understood fanfiction autism when I was younger, but now the autism flows through my veins.

there's no way to force it from readers but probably the biggest thing you can do is make good use of the author notes options, either before or after the story (or both)

I like to give a tiny bit of insight to the making of the story, like if the idea was from somewhere else, if the story ran longer or shorter than i expected (always longer eugh), if I had to take a big break or had to play the game some more to recall something, yadda yadda. Basically behind the scense shit.

Next thing, and probably more important, is to ask questions of the reader (if you have any legitimately, don't try and force it if you don't have one then it's just kinda soulless engagement bait youtuber shit). I first started doing this when I finished a fic and had planned on writing more in a series but couldn't really decide on pairings, so I asked in an author's not and got some replies. I've also asked if some scenes were boring or superfluous as I couldn't really tell. Ask questions of your potential readers that you'd ask here essentially if you had posted your own work. Hell, you can post your stuff here!

This has been what I've done and I love it. Getting real fanfic discussion is so fucking nice, I can't believe I avoided it for so many years, makes the whole process feel collaborative.

There's this Elden Ring fanfiction i really liked. It's a "Godwyn survives the knives and the shattering never happens but things still get chaotic" AU so instead of Tarnished in a shattered land it's the demigods and their armies dealing with the fallout in their own ways. The story changes perspectives a lot so things manage to stay interesting. Be warned that it doesn't really take the DLC into account and makes Fia and Fortissax the same person. Some highlights are:
>Death itself not wanting to let go of Godwyn and Fiartissax
>A good Miquella, Malenia, Vyke and Lansseax trying to keep Leyndell and it's people together
>A Marika who's got her shattering plan ruined, Gideon and Morgott trying to tear it apart
>A Mohg who is not yet obsessed aiding Miquella for the sake of the Omens and his cult
>A Ranni who's presumed dead by everyone else having to travel with Tiche so she can reach contact Radahn
>Rykard attacking Leyndell because he thinks Ranni's dead
>Godrick attacking Raya Lucaria with the help of Sellen only to get merked by Radahn and a Rennala who's broken out of her madness

https://archive.transformativeworks.org/works/44466445
And yes the author stopped updating, damn shame.
>>
>>741329771
Ah damn.
Not much you can do beyond that, I think a lot of readers don't have much to comment beyond "good story" and all.
Which is fine too, sometimes there's really not much more to say or you just can't think of bunch to say.
Even then, I've made efforts to try and leave a good comment on stories i like. Since I love em so much I feel the urge to pay it forward. Makes everyone's day a little brighter.

What a good thread.
>>
>>741329771
A lot of people dont have the capacity to actually work through feedback, because a lot of these communities are built around a sense of "unrequested feedback is a sin" and a good number of authors that request feedback, dont handle it well. Fortunately theres people out there that can and do give good feedback, but I think a large number of writing communities are afraid of feedback and actually are just looking for praise.

Personally I like when people can point out something I did wrong, but your mileage may vary

>>741320957
Nah fuck off, Worm is really good. You're right about the fanfics though, but that is the case in general.

>head constantly swimming with ideas that keep me up at night
>rarely ever get around to it because I'm plagued with shit sleep and have grown too comfortable with spending most of the day lurking here in a depressed daze that only makes me confused and too tired to throw a sentence together
>every few months I manage to feel okay enough to open up a word processor and do a thousand or so words only to shelve the draft forever
>reliance on chatbots for emotional and sexual gratification have only destroyed my writing ability
>barely any life experience so I can't write anything remotely believable
>haunted by disturbingly degenerate autistic fantasies that overshadow what I actually want to write and only further make me hate myself

Well, seems like some good discussion to read through at least. I always got the impression that more of /v/ was "hostile" towards fanfiction to be honest.

probably best to let the topic breathe for a bit

It's funny how /v/ is where I've been most consistently able to find and give good feedback
I wasn't terribly interested in the game but I remember helping someone with his writing on a FNAF:SL story for a while, and him being pretty open to it
>>
>>741330105
>>741330278
Thanks for the advice, anons. Yeah negative feedback can feel rough, but ultimately I want to get better at telling my story, so even if I get the trepidation I wish people would tell me what they think regardless of if it's praise or not. I can't get better when I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I'm definitely generally only of the type to leave comments on criminally underappreciated authors where they have more good stories than they have comments. I should probably make more of an effort to at least encourage people.
I'll still give it a read later and leave some feedback on ao3, since we're officially dead in the water.
>>741330198
It has genuinely been a treat.
>>741330371
I've been talking to faggots here about fanfiction in passing since the mid-2000s, you just need to hit the right tide.
>>
>>741330371
previous fanfic threads I've seen where pretty fast and full of discussion not unlike this one
it's just jannies used to 404 them
I'm not sure what changed to have them leave this one and the recent one on /co/ unmolested as they used to be deleted too
t b h I think it's cause the boards are slowing down and they're taking what they can get, or maybe staffing is down? moderation feels a little more lax, for better or worse
or fuck maybe just a single annoying janny or mod behind the removals has gone, wouldn't be the first time seemingly one guy had umbrage with certain things
>>
>>741330459
Was it Baby's Pizzeria Simulator? It got a sequel. Circus Baby On The Run.
>>
>>741330512
Some of them seem to show up to threads around this time but I guess the power of dedicated creativity is too strong
>>741330514
>I've been talking to faggots here about fanfiction in passing since the mid-2000s, you just need to hit the right tide
I know sometimes I'll see it in threads for specific games if they catch the right autism at release, but this is eye opening in a good way.
>>741330535
>t b h I think it's cause the boards are slowing down and they're taking what they can get, or maybe staffing is down? moderation feels a little more lax, for better or worse
Its weird, they are being more agressive on some things, and lax on others.
Either way, fanfiction is vidya and should be allowed

No I don't think he ended up publishing it in the end. It was about Roxy

It really is
it might be stupid and cringe at times, but it's something just about anyone can do or at least participate in
i've realized it's not much different from the silly fanart drawing threads, it's all anons pitching in and sharing genuine appreciation for something in their own way
we need more genuineness on this site more than ever
>>
>>741329224
I write for an absolutely microscopic fandom and I'm happy if I get even 3 kudos or a single comment.
>>
>fandom with a popular shy twink
>infantilize and project my mommykink onto him
>consistently end up with thousands of hits

>>
>>741330459
Yeah, I cant get my own friends to give feedback, but anons have given thorough breakdowns on good and bad points of my fics before
>>741330470
Ive gotten my mindset to where as long as the negative feedback isnt phrased like a shitposter trying to get a rise out of you, then it feels better than getting no response by a longshot
>>
>>741330683
>we need more genuineness on this site more than ever
Keep that spirit anon, yeah were cringe sometimes but sometimes its ok to be a little cringe while loving something
>>
>>741330180
That'll be a miracle. Not helping is i have the desire to avoid becoming one of those authors that stop updating fics, so in my head i want everything written before anything gets posted.
>>
>>741330690
It's been like that for me at times too
I've had some stories up for nearly a decade now with no more than 10
but my pokemon ones all have more than 50, even the really short ones and this one bad one
it's always been rough going from a pokmeon story to a non-pokemon story and having to cope with the MUCH less interaction even though I'm very familiar with the process by now
>>
>>741330825
>i want everything written before anything gets posted.
Relatable. I want to work the same way, but that's more because I want to be able to edit things later down the line if I need to since I'm a poor planner
>>
>>741330878
Once a story falls off the front page it stops getting much attention anyway, that's my experience
>>
>>741330878
Those 10 people will always appreciate the effort. At least, that's what I tell myself.
