How would you rank the 3rd party Smash characters in terms of importance/relevance to Nintendo?
>>
The only one I don't like is Richter because he's a glorified skin.
>>
>>741298847
Banjo is the only one I like.
>>
>>741298847
The only ones that deserve to be in Smash are:
>Sonic
>Mega Man
>Ryu
>Simon
>Hero
That's it. Fuck everyone else. Yes, including Cloud. Final Fantasy has a history on Nintendo consoles, but the series shouldn't be represented by the face of its exodus to PlayStation.
>>
>>741299282
I agree with that but I would maybe also keep Pac-Man.

Pac-Man has no cultural relevance whatsoever. He's a marketing icon who Bandai Namco prostitutes for no other reason than to remind consumers that they own him, and the fact that he had games on Nintendo consoles was merely a coincidence. He sits and smokes at the same poker table of irrelevant has-beens as Betty Boop and Felix the Cat.

"When you think of Final Fantasy, you think of Cloud." -Sakurai
>>
>>741298847
Gradius should be represented
>>
>>741298847
Persona shouldn't have even gotten into Smash. Who asked for that garbage from a company that never made a good video game in?
>>
>>741298847
Banjo and Sora are genuine mistakes. What the fuck were they thinking?
>>
It's impressive that in 16 attempts (excluding echoes) not a single 3rd party character has been fun to fight against.
>>
>>741301887
Sakurai is retarded.
>>
>>741302729
No, that's you.
>>
>>741298847
There are faces that are so iconic they absolutely belong. Pac-man, Megaman, Ryu, Sonic, Simon, and Hero. I would honestly say Hero is a character I'm surprised wasn't introduced sooner considering how influential Dragon Quest is. The others I'm a bit more luke warm on and firmly believe the inclusion of Steve and Joker is an abomination. Banjo and Kazooie to me was always a dollar store knock of Mario 64, so him being there was always kinda weird to me. I don't like FF at all, but I get why Cloud and Sephiroth were included. I actually don't hate Snake and think its cool he's in smash, but he doesn't have the same level of influence as the first 6 I mentioned.
>>
>>741302407
name 1 (one) fun character to fight against
>>
>>741298847
As far as relating to Nintendo specifically?

>Basically a Nintendo game in all but legality
Mega Man
Simon
Bayonetta
Banjo and Kazooie
Hero

>Mr. Video Games, so they belong in any Vidya crossover
Pacman
Ryu and Ken

>Rivals of Nintendo
Sonic
Cloud

>I guess a lot of kids play Minecraft on Nintendo consoles
Steve, Alex, Enderman, Zombie

>??? Why are they here
Snake
Richter
Joker
Terry
Sephiroth
Sora
>>
>>741298847
Steve and Bayonetta can fuck off. Put Ryu Hayabusa, Leon Kennedy, Crash and Doomguy in and call it a day.
>>
>>741303279
Donkey Kong
>>
>>741298847
I would sacrifice all of these guests (except Sora) for even 1 more Sonic rep. Focusing on guests instead of rounding out the Nintendo lineup will always be a misstep in my eyes, anyway.
>>
>>741299751
most arcades still have some form of pacman games retard, leave the house for once. dumbest analogy I've read all day
>>
>>741298847
Megaman
Simon
Banjo
Ryu/Ken just for having the best version of the SF2 soundtrack
the rest
>>
>>741299282
I would be fine with a mainline SMT rep getting in, Joker is a pretty lame pick and an even lamer character. Persona 4 arena is RIGHT THERE sakurai and you chose the most boring way to make someone fight with a persona.
>>
>>741309852
he'll probably just get replaced by the next protagonist, assuming that Persona even comes back which hopefully it doesn't.
>>
1 megaman
2 hero
3 simon
4 banjo
5 pacman

fuck the rest, still never understood why snake was put in before simon.
>>
In general smash has way too many third party characters. It's a nintendo game and it should always remain that.
>>
Man why were the Fighter passes so bad?
>>
>>741298847
>How would you rank the 3rd party Smash characters in terms of importance/relevance to Nintendo?
Funny enough, I think it is easier to pick the ones that are entirely irrelevant to Nintendo and its history.
>Snake
Literally just a request from a friend. Metal Gear has no real history with Nintendo
>Pac-Man
Relevant to gaming as a whole, but not to Nintendo specifically outside of Namco helping with development and a small handful of Pac-Man games on Nintendo systems
>Cloud/Sephiroth
Totally irrelevant to Nintendo at the time of their inclusion, but with all three FF7 Remakes coming to Nintendo, they are somewhat relevant now, sadly
>Simon/Richter
Simon is barely relevant given Castlevania's early beginnings on Nintendo systems, but Richter is entirely irrelevant to Nintendo
>Joker
Literally just Sakurai bias. Straight-up. Persona is largely irrelevant
>Banjo & Kazooie
Oh boy, two games from a dead series that were Nintendo exclusive.
>Terry
Actually pretty unsure on this one. I do not believe his series has a strong history with Nintendo
>Kazuya
Only relevance to Nintendo is the same as Pac-Man's, being that Namco helps with Smash development
>Sora
Kingdom Hearts has been entirely irrelevant to Nintendo, but with KH4 coming to a Nintendo system, and how chummy Square Enix has been lately, guess he is relevant now, sadly

That leaves
>Sonic
No comment needed.
>Mega Man
Irrelevant in the larger scope of gaming, but has a strong history on Nintendo systems
>Ryu/Ken
Relevant in both Nintendo history and in modern day, sadly
>Bayonetta
Nintendo is literally why Bayonetta 2 and beyond exist, sadly
>Hero
Enormous in Japan, and somewhat relevant now given Square Enix's relationship with Nintendo currently
>Steve
Nintendo has had collabs with Minecraft before. And its MINECRAFT
>>
>>741311463
Because Nintendo forced Sakurai to add a bunch of third parties that don’t fit, you can tell by how the gameplay philosophy of all the dlc characters clash with the overall roster.
>>
>>741313096
Pac-man did have those collabs with the mario kart arcade games, and Dragon Quest had the Fortune Street games. Tekken had some collabs with Nintendo games as well I think with a Wii U game. Richter's game was released on SNES, and considering that Sakurai and Hideki Kamiya are good friends as well, Bayonetta was probably also a friend request.

S tier - highly relevant
-Banjo (was a Nintendo character/ip)
*Bayonetta (more or less an ip Nintendo revived and somewhat own. Could be dropped to A tier.)

A tier - highly relevant to their history
-Mega Man
-Pac Man
-Ryu/Ken
-Simon
-Hero
*Sonic (could be dropped to B tier but the sega/Nintendo rivalry and Olympic games crossovers raises a bit higher)

B tier - relevant but not majorly
-Snake
-Richter
-Terry
*Steve (due to Nintendo's involvement and how many versions exist on their hardware, could possibly raise to A tier)

C tier - barely relevant at time of reveal
-Cloud/Sephiroth
-Joker
-Kazuya

D tier - fundamentally shouldn't even be in the game
-Sora
>>
>>741298847
Going purely by what was and wasn't on Nintendo consoles:
>Snake
MG2 was on NES but MGS (which Solid Snake is based on) was a PS staple. X
>Sonic
Consistent third party since the Fall of SEGA. O
>Mega Man
Consistent third party. O
>Pac-Man
Consistent third party. O
>Ryu/Ken
Consistent third party. O
>Cloud/Sephiroth
Baffling choices considering FF7 caused Square to be banned from Nintendo for a decade. X
>Bayonetta
Nintendo owns the franchise at this point, I believe. O
>Simon/Richter
Consistent third party. O
>Joker
There have been multiple SMTs on Nintendo, but Persona, specifically, is historically PS. X
>Hero (x4)
Dragon Quest is a staple. O
>Banjo
His only games of note are two N64 games. O
>Terry
NEO-GEO has always been its own thing. X
>Minecraft
Probably the only edge case, as while Minecraft is a PC game first and foremost, it has made its way to several Nintendo consoles. ~
>Kazuya
I don't think a single Tekken game is on a Nintendo console. Maybe one of the Tag Tournaments. X
>Sora
A GBA card game and two DS games is all he's got. Arguably an edge case like MC but none of his main games are on the consoles. X
>>
>>741298959
My nigga gets it. Only "3rd party" that can trace their bloodline back to Nintendo.
>>
>>741299751
You literally don't know shit about pac or his current relevance.
>>
>>741301887
And he would be wrong.
>>
>>741299751
>Pac-Man has no cultural relevance whatsoever.
bait or mental retardation?

>Pac-Man has no cultural relevance whatsoever.
And yet Simon does?
>>
I think theyre all fantastic, a little heavy on square enix, but the picks are solid. Only one i would potentially swap out would be joker, but p5 is so big I understand why he was picked. I cant think who else they would ad for 3rd party thats as big for the next game. Would be interesting to see a Sony or Xbox character or hell something from Steam/PC but besides Master Chief, sackboy (brand safe but I mean we already have solid fucking snake), and Freeman/TF2 pick i couldn't think of anyone else for 3rd parties besides maybe a crash bandicoot or spyro. I do like the picks of modern and old so who knows.

The thing to understand about Snake, is for the west atleast, the nes game and its sequel were the introduction to him and the franchise prior to MGS and had the same relevance of sorts to Simon and Mega Man as a "Nintendo character". Plus you had Ghost Babel and Nintendo directly involved with a remake of MGS. I wouldn't put him on the same tier as Hero, but definitely higher than Cloud for his relevance to Nintendo history.

As for Terry, he was actually pretty prolific on the snes and gameboy so it is entirely feasible that a snes owner played through his first three games without ever touching a neo geo. Basically the same situation as Ryu's relevance to Nintendo, but obviously not as major.
>>
>>741320735
Fair points, I'll freely admit I wasn't alive for the NES so I can't speak on the popularity of the old Metal Gear games. Nor did I give Twin Snakes or any of the Nintendo ports a fair shake. I'm still not sure if I'd go as far as to swap it over, but it's more of an edge case than otherwise.
As for Terry, I suppose my mind was in KoF but I should've considered more of Fatal Fury. It's on his hat for fuck's sake. You got me there as well. Thanks for fact checking me, anon.
>>
>>741298847
Banjo (he literally USED to be a Nintendo character)
Mega Man
Simon
Richter
Ryu
Ken
Hero
Pac Man
Sonic
Bayonetta
Steve
Snake
Cloud
Sephiroth
Terry
Sora
Joker
Kazuya (Tekken doesn’t even have a single game on Switch)
>>
>>741321460
>Tekken doesn’t even have a single game on Switch
Funny how rosterfags forget this fact and they keep attacking Joker and Persona instead.
>>
>>741321460
>>741322427
Fringe case, but Kazuya was more relevant than Joker at the time of their introductions since Tekken Advance and the Wii U versions of Tag 2 existed. (Wasnt there also a 3DS Tekken?)

Joker's only real relevance at the time was the one Persona Q game.

>pacman has no le heckin culture relevance
He inspired bing bing wahoo, he gets referenced in every form of social media, has an iconic timeless design, sparked the arcade craze that allowed donkey kong to get a normie audience. Without pacman you wouldnt have mario. And besides, most normies dont know who the fuck Simon and Hero are.

>A GBA card game and two DS games is all he's got. Arguably an edge case like MC but none of his main games are on the consoles. X
There's a music game spinoff on the Switch as well, and all 3 numbered titles had those Cloud ports on the Switch. Dream Drop Distance was a 3DS exclusive for the longest time.
>>
>>741324213
Same reason gaas and phone games are popular.
>>
To Nintendo itself?
Banjo
Simon
DQ protags
Bayonetta
Multiplats. The likes of Ryu and Steve are important but not because they were on Nintendo. Kazuya and Cloud are specifically important because of their history and relationship with playstation.
