So everyone is just gonna forget that this was the man who killed the Xbox brand.
Phil Spencer literally did nothing and got praise for it at least Asha is making big decisions
>>741330580Everyone accepts that Don Mattrick killed it, but Phil stood by with a defibrillator and just did nothing.
>>741330580>"Xbox, turn off">players disappearvery awesome feature. The CEO was a total troll like us.
>Don kill xbox>Phil gets in, start fixing things, buy new studios and let studios do what they want>Pajeetslop comes behind and force everyone and everything to be gay and ugly>xbox just dies
>>741330580who?
>>741330580>"so stick with 360 if you dont want that?"
>>741330580Don Mattrick is the guy who gave Xbox CancerAIDSAsha is the Desi Girl putting it down old yeller style
the xbox brand was never alive
>>741330720Still remember someone would spam nukes on Phils Fallout 76 camp.
>>741330870Was this the last time geoff actually did journalism
>>741330580Dead serious, if Microsoft didn't pull back at the time, they would have had a damn good console with the Xbox One and it would have been future proof too. Then the Series consoles could have built in that and been even better. Just about everything the Xbox One was talking about doing back in 2014 or whenever is commonplace now in 2026 and was commonplace even a few years ago. Mattrick deserved to be fired, but the Xbox One would have been good if they stuck to their guns and took the arrows for about a year or so. Take the memes, but don't deviate from what you know would have panned out eventually based on the data they had. That said, this gave us Gamepass which is a admittedly a good deal and should have been (and might still be) the future of Xbox. Put the Xbox app on phones, laptops, tablets, TV, and everything with a screen, merge that with Gamepass deals and you can basically reach people where they are. And you do it without needing to go in the hole throwing money at the console and trying to keep that hardware going for 7 years minimum. Arguably you could even consider cutting the console out entirely if after a few years of growth through the Xbox app on other devices and in the cloud. All while using Azure. Another good idea. The problem with Microsoft is they are absolute dogshit with marketing and PR. You could ask Microsoft to sell water to the guy dying of thirst in the desert and MS would find a way to convince him that dying of dehydration is a good option to consider. It's sad because they do have decent ideas, they are just so bad at execution and marketing that they will always be shit on and ridiculed even if they are making the right move.tl;dr He did, but if MS stuck with their plan and weren't shit for marketing and PR, Xbox would have been in much better shape.
>>741330671>Phil Spencer literally did nothingKilled Kinect Backwards compatibilityKilled ScaleboundPut all xbox games on pcCreated GamepassGot over $80 billion dollars in debt buying studios Stopped paying for exclusivesshutdown tokyo gameworks killed exclusives outright Phil did a lot of shit. Some good a lot of it bad. I think the worst thing he did was go on a buying spree and stopped commissioning exclusives. He decided to go all in on first party and that really fucked over EA and Ubisoft that used to survive on that money. Sony followed them buy buying Bungie and then went all in on live service slop. For better or worse these decisions killed all reason to buy a console. Now MS strategy is to use bring back the console war with maximum izzat.
>>741330671>>741330720Phil didn't do nothing. He was just waiting for his chance to do something and it never came.
>>741331685The world wasn't ready for all digital consoles yet. Retailers still had a lot of power and they encouraged people to buy PS4s buy making their sections look nicer and with more games in stock. Also putting out that camera right after the NSA leak was a terrible idea nobody was ready for that. They also had the ability to plug in your cable box to watch cable on your xbox which was way behind the times. I think I might be the one of the few people to actually use that feature. People like to quote games for the failure but they arguably had a better launch line up. That conference was so bad people hardly remember how bad 599 US DOLLARS was.
>>741330870Crazy how much that one showcase completely killed off all the momentum Xbox had.
>>741330580Whenever I see this image of Don Mattrick, all I can think about is this one parody video where he's singing Suspicious Minds.
>>741331836>Killed Kinectbased
>>741332261Kinect is what killed Xbox. They wasted their money on the shit instead of locking down exclusives or at least blocking Sony for getting exclusives.
>>741332261That one Sony troll video after the XBox announcement of how to share a game by them handing a copy of the game to the other person was ad-hoc marketing genius. I was a 360 bro and that whole debacle made me go PS4 that gen
>>741330580Cloud gaming would have been amazing. And all you mexicans and niggers with bad internet can kill yourselves.
>>741330967It would have been great if this happened a good few years ago but Todd doesn't give a shit anymore. He is probably hoping Bethesda gets shut down so he gets a nice severence package.
>>741331836thank god microsoft led sony into a shared grave, all because sony thought it was cringe and gay to compete with nintendo
>>741333529I owned a PS3 and 360.Was only gonna get one that next gen.Sony doing this pretty much made me go with the PS4 as well. How could Microsoft fuck up so badly?!That shit legit boggled my mine back then.
>>741332123Everything you said is true and I forgot about the Snowden whistleblowing timing with the Kinect thing on Xbox One. It's just unfortunate that the Xbox One had everything it needed to be a success but they couldn't get over the PR and marketing part. I just wish MS wouldn't crumble and remove stuff from their hardware or switch plans so early a with things like Gamepass and the Xbox ecosystem expansion because some guys online made YouTube videos "upset (for views)" about it. That's not exclusive to just Xbox and MS either. One of the things I'm 100% in agreement on with what I've been seeing is that Phil was way too nice. He focused way too much on trying to be everyone's best friend, including these Xbox "diehard" fanboys and trying to be overly "transparent". I will say it until I'm blue in the face that they should have stuck with the Xbox Anywhere initiative since that shit was a great idea that appeals to younger, upcoming generations as well as current ones. When Xbox fanatics who "love Xbox" because it makes them money on YouTube to talk about them online got upset and bitch about the "soul of Xbox", Phil should have put his foot down rather than try to tiptoe and compensate to appease them. Phil was right with the initiative, but acted like he should apologize and pull back for being right to make people who don't know what he does happy. He was right about exclusives, he was right about he industry and console stagnation, and he was right about the direction Xbox should go in, but he didn't own it.
>>741330580>killed the XboxI like to look at it from a different perspective, which is that he saved gamers by telling the truth about the console. He's a real hero.
>>741334106Also just to add I know Phil also had to juggle Satya breathing down his neck ready to shut down Xbox any day since Phil had to beg him not to after the Xbox One. So some of his hesitancy and decisions probably also came from trying to make Xbox fit as close as possible to what Satya wanted Microsoft to be, which also meant constantly changing shit up to fit whatever Satya wanted for that month. Phil was in a very tough spot.
>>741330580Phil was just as guilty of all the crap they were pushing during that time
>>741331836I should’ve said he never did anything to help the brand since he basically made Xbox a third party publisher but I guess he did oversee backwards compatibility which has been the one good thing to happen on Xbox in recent years
>>741334106>100% in agreement on with what I've been seeing is that Phil was way too nice.Him buying double fine is an obvious indicator that he is too much of a nice guy gamer to be an executive. They can make interesting games but they are a complete money funnel. He was basically using gamepass as a make a wish like how epic funded Alan Wake 2. He was buying studios that got a ton of praise from critics but never made the sales. I think they told him he needs to shut down all these studios and he didn't have the stomach for it so he left. He went on an apology tour for Tango Gameworks and he seemed actually upset by it. >>741334415Porting all Xbox games to PC probably saved them. They should have never went to PS though. Bad look to do that with nothing in return.
>>741331836>You now realize Reggie fighting to have wii sports as a freebie is what ultimately caused Don Mattrick to become envious and develop Kinect.
>>741334191>>741334457Phil Spencer was just too nice and developers should also take blame for taking advantage of his kindness. He gave them unlimited money, 10 years and to make any game they wanted. All he said was "to make the games good, we'll figure out the money part later" according to jew schreir and all they produced was forgettable shit. Of course MS was going to come in with the hatchet eventually and that time is now. They already gave them a decade to play around and none of those games were anything beyond a 8/10.
>>741334667Where he fucked up was not putting his foot down about Microsoft's "employees are contractors" policy for game studios where you can only hold employment under any Microsoft company for 18 months before you're forcibly laid off, because then Microsoft can legally claim you were a contractor and deny you benefits, seniority benefits, and a whole slew of other things.18 months before guaranteed turnover is not feasible for any game company to make anything with a consistent vision, cultivate talent, or do much of anything; nobody gave them a decade, they were being ritualistically lobotomized every 18 months in staccato rhythm. The only exemptions are executives and PR talking heads.
>>741335041the 18 months contractor thing was mostly for Halo studios which also has 800 employees and 300 contractors at their peak. The other developer studios never used the contractor system.
>>741335275I can't reiterate "Microsoft does this with literally all companies they own" enough.
>>741334457>Porting all Xbox games to PC probably saved them.>probably Try "definitely". I agree.
>>741330580>Phil Harrison played it safe>Don Mattrick took risks>Peter Moore played war games>Don Mattrick took bigger risks>Phil Spencer literally did nothing>Asha wants to gut xbox and move it to IndiaThis is why Japanese companies take their time with CEOs
>>741330671A company as big as Microsoft moves slow. Anything Asha is getting credit for has been decided years before.
>>741337754layoffs of just about every aquired studio?
>>741330580Losing that consol generation was a huge lose. The industry knew this would be the one where people are going to buy the most digital games and more than likely stick with that platform for the long haul. Xbox failure to do so really fucked the brand over.
>>741338492Yeah I'm in agreement with him that she's only there to sunset the studio and everything going on is either Don Mattrick's fault or Phil Spencer's fault. We're talking about a guy that spent around $80 BILLION of normal Microsoft money on Activision-Blizzard-King. If nothing else fucked Xbox, that definitely did it, when Xbox couldn't be ignored as a "rounding error" anymore and got both stakeholder and executive notice.
>>741338492Yes that too. Both the good and the bad. After about 18 more months you will start to see some of the effects of her own personal policies.
>>741330580Xbox killed itself. It was cruising on investment hype and the willingness of those boomer investors to insist on using Microsoft APIs for overbudgeted games with half-assed ports that forced PC parity with the Xbox and generally didn't work as well on PS3 due to its weird architecture. When the hype dried up in 2012, budgets got slashed and consultant were brought in at all levels, Xbox also died.>>741331685They targeted the console at casual retards and everyone with standards told the casual retards that they didn't want a console for casual retards.Gamepass is a subscription service and is not a good deal by definition. The problem with Microsoft is that they want to be middlemen and as soon as they are middlemen, they also drop the obligation to deliver a good product because you have to go through the middleman.>>741333853>How could Microsoft fuck up so badly?!They wanted to maintain that same investment hype of games being AAA memestock. They needed investors to believe that the casual audience not only existed and bought games, but that it would also grow exponentially larger. The people who bought the PS2 as just a DVD player and bought maybe one FIFA or CoD title needed to be a market that could be tapped and kept captive.
>>741330580Oh I'll never forget about you Don "the con" Mattrick. If anybody should be barred from working in the games industry, it's you.
