The less lives you have when you die the lower the rank will go.It also helps to only upgrade your weapon with large shot power ups and avoid picking up upgrades when you're already at max power.There are a lot of other ways to manipulate Rank, but you don't need to optimize it perfectly to get a 1cc. You just have to know it exists.

If you accidentally pick up an unplanned third option the run isn't over, just ditch it at the next planned death and don't do it again. It's not for everyone, and yeah it is a system that actually exists to fuck over the player and make money, but that's honestly where part of the appeal lies. It's enough firepower and will reduce your rank gain a lot. From stage 5 onwards you can go up to max options and also stop suiciding and start hoarding lives, but still do everything else. If you drop your medal chain around stage 4 or so, you'll probably just want to start ignoring medals for the rest of the run because the low tiers add a lot of rank and in the latter stages you're going to be forced to lose your chain anyways. On the final boss you can mash and max out your fire rate because why the fuck not
