Hack that was at the right place and the right time. His bizarre fast-paced Japanese sense of humor had a thick cultural barrier preventing people from understanding it, so it came off as hilarious and "shroom-fuelled" to western audiences that liked quirky random humor. Similar to how FLCL was so popular in the same time frame. That plus how in-your-face the game was made it extra funny to mid 2000s sensibilities. It was hilarious in that time period to see Johnny Knoxville jump into a rich mansion, cutting off the heads of people with a light saber he bought off eBay, then makes a blatant jack-off gesture to recharge it's batteries, all so he could be "number 1" and for pussy.Fast forward ~20 years, and that barrier is gone. We have enough sources to understand what the fuck he is talking about to realize it's not so randomxd or quirky nonsense, and what isn't understood just isn't that funny anymore. Then all you have left are his insane plotlines that I think people just don't have the time or energy anymore (along with a huge wave of dopamine addiction) to bother wanting to figure out, most of which just results in a basic bitch take of "government kinda bad" and "You should just stop thinking about bad things that happened to you."Then, even worse, his future projects that are made in the modern era are clearly influenced by western sources, which just defacto means they all suck.I used to love this guy's stories. I'm disillusioned now, and so should you.
