Nobody on here owns an XSX. If you took a poll of what consoles people game with on /v/ it'd probably be PC, PS5, Switch, and Steam Deck. You have to factor in people that own multiple consoles and game on them, but I play everything on PC. The only thing I can't play is Nintendo games, and a few Sony exclusives, and that's it. The extra revenue from selling a handful of games (really only Forza) on PS/Switch couldn't balance out the current users either exiting from the crumbling ecosystem or reducing their spending to the minimum (lower tier of Game Pass) to reduce their losses when Xbox will inevitably fold.
It made sure when people need to buy their next system it won't be an Xbox because they can be sure they can play Forza elsewhere. Which leaves Xbox with an one time purchase (- porting cost, - platform holder fee) instead of raking in 30% on every sale from said person.

The only way Xbox survives in any capacity is to just turn into a third party publisher like SEGA. It is obvious how day 1 games are the most expensive, high profile games come second and everything else is chump change. Anyone who believes they could reduce their GP sub significantly by leaving the Fortnite or Ubisoft out are in for a rude awakening. The exact reason why they did add these because it cost them near nothing.
Not to mention Game Pass is pumped by Xbox multiplayer membership. People who already pay for nothing aka the multiplayer access are more likely to pay a bit more for the catalog. People will also be surprised when the next PCbox will still have the multiplayer tax because it would crater GP otherwise.

The issue was the 30% profit margin.
That 30% profit margin isn't there anymore.
This is clearly because Xbox and Microsoft by extension, realised it threatened the long-term viability of the business.
Hence the change in strategy. Accepting short-term pain/loss for long-term health.
It isn't the hardware or services, it's the PARAMETERS that was the problem.
As for the hardware, you must have exclusivity.
Losing exclusivity means you lose a reason for your platform to exist. You lose your platform, you then lose the 30% profit on third party games to other platforms and in the long-run third party support entirely. Lose third party support, you lose any service that you try to sell as a one-stop shop for all gaming needs.

The problem is that what you are talking about (prioritizing long term goals over short term gains) is too late at this point. The Series generation should have been the big comeback and Phil made sure it will bury the brand. Prominent members of the community warned Spencer ages ago he can't make empty promises, he needs to deliver blockbusters and finally he can't go multiplat because that is the point you won't come back from. After Xbox pissed away two generations and now destroys the built up studio capacity what can they offer?
Their next PC console will be the most expensive and will not be significantly stronger than the Playstation. All while they spent two years educating the gamers they are multiplat. What will be the launch titles for the Helix? E-Day but actually 4K? Halo and Fable Remakes running better than on Playstation but at least for twice the entry price?
