The demo is out, what do you think of this iteration of Jonathan Blow's genius?
Here are my first impressions from playing for an hour:
> the graphics are great but HOW THE FUCK DOES IT LAG SO FUCKING MUCH? DOOM 2016 RAN ON ULTRA PERFECT SETTINGS WITH 0 LAG.
HOW THE FUCK DO THESE ASSHOLES MANAGE TO MAKE SOME ISOMETRIC BULLSHIT WITH 0 ACTION THIS FUCKING UNOPTIMIZED?

I guess I must have sub 30 iq because I've been stuck on this beginner puzzle for half an hour after breezing through the others. You need to move at least 1 goblin south as well as west, which requires 2 stones, I'm assuming first you move the eastmost goblin to its marked tile, and then you push the north goblin in between the other 2 goblins causing them to all kill each other but no matter how I do it, I can't get 1 stone back up after moving the first goblin to then move the other one down. i guess i need to play low iq games instead and stop trying to get into things requiring logical reasoning. even if I were to solve this now it would just be through trial and error, defeating the point.
>>
>>741441524
Zachtronics games are more about designing a thing to fulfill requirements. This is more about finding the solution to a (usually simple) problem that might seem impossible at first.

I learned about Jon Blow from his programming videos, I didn't even know he was a game dev. I literally thought he was building a game just to prove his programming language, and engine, were effective. Then I found out about Braid and all that. He absolutely considers himself a top programmer in the world and takes great pride in it. Not making any comment on the lag and how bad/non existent it is. I have zero interest in Jon's games, his programming videos are funny though.

So, now we know what these gold squares do. Solving the puzzle on one of them unlock the overlap area between the adjacent worlds. These overlaps have gauge that fills up once you solve important puzzles in said area, with a mark at 7/10. Blow said that there will be 3 endings, for unlocking 4, 6, and 10 of something respectively. This seems to be it. Looking at the trailer map, there are a total of 6 of these in the overworld, 1 for each world pair. Where are the other 4?

>>
I think this game has really highlighted how many people have a flawed approach to thinking about sokoban. You'll often see comments like: "I know what to do, it's just annoying to fiddle all the pieces into place!" However, nine times out of ten, it's obvious "what to do," and the puzzle is in making it happen. Like, obviously you need to do get the box onto the panel, or you obviously need to use a mirror to teleport in such-and-such way, or obviously you need to use the wizard to position enemies in a certain way... The hard part, usually, is specifically that making these things happen is hard. That's the whole point of sokoban as a genre: limited movement, limited space, easy to get yourself into bricked scenarios, etc. It punishes brute-forcing input mashing and rewards thinking ahead to see how to put the pieces in place properly. The game isn't bad because the solution is """obvious""" and then you get stuck doing "the menial part," these people just mistake what the actual puzzle is.

If you ask me, the reason this causes so much frustration in people is because they don't actually want to think. Despite this being a puzzle game, ostensibly about thinking to find a non-obvious solution, most would be happiest to just kind of go into auto-pilot and "see" an obvious solution then trivially implement the obvious solution. They are probably happiest with puzzle games that make them feel smart without them actually having to do any actual thinking. And that's fair enough, it's not like someone HAS to enjoy working out the steps in a sokoban puzzle. It's just bemusing to see people miss the entire point of the entire genre they are engaging with and lashing out at the game for it. As if their refusal to think through steps means the game is bad for not letting them instantly win with their "obvious" solution.
>>
Why is the overworld so hideous looking?
There's no visual coherence, it looks like a debug level.
>>
>>741451459
good puzzles aren't tedious, but instinctive, this game is an example of that, and why it's much more enjoyable than most sokobans, including ones like Baba Is You

I feel like this game's art direction is a tragic misstep born from the right intentions. I can just imagine how Blow thought "wouldn't it be cool to have the set itself make the world readable as a grid, instead of using an actual grid?"
So they went through all this insane effort making these weight painting and art tools to make each tile be subtly different but still make the world look tile based. But the result actually looks worse than if they had just created the level art with little regard for grids and then just overlayed a grid on top of it.

I tried recommending the game to my friend and he said "looks like a mobile game. looks whack" and it's kind of true and any attempts by me to explain why it looks the way it does just sound like cope

CASEY MURATORI gave up on Promesst 2, and there's a third one in the full game with 12 different beam types. What the fuck is the final difficulty gonna be like?
>>
>>741453426
I think there are various approaches Jon could have taken with the visuals, but conveying the grid structure through the art geometry is an essential goal. Trying to superimpose anything over an arbitrarily designed environment would not look good or readable.

What the visuals do more than anything is clearly communicate playable area and interactibles. The job of any art team/director is to ensure that the result feels completely obvious and natural, as if the visuals were just chosen and the look emerged spontaneously from that decision, but it's very easy to fuck up contrast, color coding, value differences, detail density, animation and posing etc. in a way that clutters the scene and strains the eye. The game does an exceptionally good job of avoiding that.
>>
>>741451934
I found Promise to be easy after I figured out what the beams do. It's very freeform but it's very obvious what kind of moves are not a good idea to do and can lead to a softlock. I might end up wrong with the full game, but it's not something I'm dreading currently.

I've already solved a version of this puzzle previously, in my attempt at recreating this game. I based it on the image linked below, and seems that that screenshot was either taken mid-solution, of they changed the starting state.

played 45mins, going to wait for release now as I've seen enough and don't want to repeat 8 hours of puzzles / story. never played a sokoban game before, but I'd say it's good, the graphics are pretty and the story seems competant for a puzzle game, kind of Trine like. The audo logs are typical blow philosphy, but you can just skip them. controls feel a little weird to me? I didn't have a problem with them when playing so maybe they are tuned right, but I did notice when you spam L<->R really fast it queues up a lot of actions and you kind of lose control, but that was me trying to figure out what was up with them. I really liked the segment where you swap between all 3 powers in the overworld, very cool, and I assume what the game is really going to be about based on how the puzzles progressed in the witness. people are bitching about performance but I sit at my monitors refresh rate cap and never see any drops so doesn't matter to me

I think it's still fine to wait for the full release because the AI voices in the Promise are awful and I wouldn't want to sit through that again. It also feels like some of the new puzzles in the demo should have dialog. It usually happens when 2 characters meet for the first time.

Well, it's a new-ish mechanic. This one specifically teaches you how to think about pushing rocks into water as Valens with his multipush. Heroes and Water actually gets pretty good, I didn't expect this game to do so much with such a simple concept.

Am I reddit for liking hauling heroes the most? The other 2 take themselves so seriously with fart sniffing esotericism. Mirror isle is full of "you are, but you will be what you aren't" rubbish and the promise is enigmatic scifi political commentary

Hauling heroes is just a basic adventurers on a boiler plate quest. It's full of even cringier dialogue but at least it's up front with it's vapidness, it's not constantly trying to be so sort of le deep intellectual piece

Funnily enough my favourite character is the Priestess.

Don't remember their particular names (killer sudoku?) but they were various math/logic puzzles
Eventually I would just do all the weekly or hard daily puzzles on the right side of this website https://www.brainbashers.com/puzzles.asp
It's not to say that any of them are incredibly difficult puzzles to wrap your head around, just ways to practice problem solving algorithms

Yes, it is. Just give me the damn puzzles. I’m not picking up any audio logs, I’m not going to waste time deciphering Fez style riddles or easter eggs with the “community”. It’s all very tedious. Puzzle games need to stop trying to do so much to generate social media engagement. It’s cheap and insulting to my intelligence.

>>
Another thing. I don’t care how many damn puzzles the game has. It makes me want to play it less knowing there are hundreds of hours of puzzles and milling around in the overworld. This is like a AAA approach to designing a puzzle game in the worst way possible. And I’m not impressed by any of the puzzle designs. There’s no aha moment, no point where I think the game is being clever. It’s game design 101 where you introduce mechanics with simple challenges that Nintendo invented in the 80s.
>>
>>741460181
I don't know why you think some overworld puzzling suddenly means it will have Fez riddles and ARG components for social media engagement. It's clearly to blend all the various puzzle styles together under different conditions (i.e. the overworld character having different specialties and abilities). If you can only enjoy puzzle games when methodically checking them off a list I think that's way more of a problem with you. This is a video game, not a List of Puzzles.

That said, check out Bean and Nothingness if you just want the damn puzzles.
>>
>>741460608

Pretentious bullshit. Should I dedicate hundreds of hours of my life to every puzzle game some smug tranny on /v/ namedrops to prove my credentials? Fuck off. It’s bloat. These games don’t get better over the course of those hours. It’s quantity over quality with new ideas applied until the player’s interest has been exhausted. Make more games like Jelly no Puzzle. Now that’s a clever, honest well scoped game that doesn’t overstay its welcome.

The voice acting is a little rough but man is this game gonna be amzing once it combines Promise and Mirror mechanics. Mirror puzzles are going to get intimidating fast. Hyped honestly
>>
Let me show you what I consider clever design which goes beyond game design 101 principles. There’s a moment in Monster’s Expedition where you push a log and something unexpected happens that both teaches a new mechanic and leads to a cute little cinematic moment. You probably know what I mean if you have played it and if you haven’t then play it so you can become cultured like me.
>>
>>741461243
You have a point in preferring honed games. I would recommend Magicube if you haven't heard of it. However, I don't think you need to be so hostile calling it bloat and worthless; there's a lot of value being left on the pile there. It makes sense to prefer 50 great puzzles to 100 good puzzles, but for plenty of people it can be plenty fun to go through 100 good puzzles, and it may very well end up being that the game is a lot stronger for having a huge number of puzzles than it would have been trying to be a more dense experience.

It’s a soulless AAA remake of several indie games mashed together with all the performance issues you would expect from an Unreal game made by inexperienced developers. It’s like the whole game is an elaborate shitpost 10 years in the making.
>>
>>741465614
nigga, it's a demo that was released in short notice. obviously he's going to polish this shit and optimize everything in the final release.
>>
>>741466398
Yeah just give him 10 more years guys come on. Rome wasn’t built in a decade.
>>
>>741466398
I'm looking forward to the game myself but let's put a limit on our copium intake here.
VA, sure, I trust all the lines will be done in the final release. But optimisation is tied closely to the core engine which is the main thing he spent all this time on. Far too deep to be 'polished' at the last moment.
>>
>>741466631
nope, optimization is the last step. he will do benchmarks on all platforms and figure out any problems and polish them before the release. premature optimization is masturbation, as they say. also, i think this a debug build as well, so not running as fast as it actually can.
>>
>>741464186
>>741464350
how'd you do on the 3 gobbo one?
>>
>>741466779
That’s cope, stop gargling his nuts. Demos are called demos because they’re supposed to demonstrate what the game is like. It’s not an early access release. Words have meaning.
>>
>>741465614
I tried it on 2 different laptops and the game doesn't run because of some shader.
>>
>>741466398
>short notice
Motherfucker it's a block pushing puzzle game that he's been making for years. Why does he feel the need to reinvent the wheel in order to provide gameplay that hasn't fucking changed in decades?
>>
>>741466631
If your PC is shittier than a Switch 2 that's pretty depressing
>>
>>741466969
Do you think the game runs well?
>>
>>741466942
if have a dual-GPU laptop, try manually disabling the integrated one.
For some reason Jblow leaves it up to a driver hint in the exe instead of manually grabbing and enabling the proper GPU at runtime.
>>
>>741467064
I don't know, I don't have a potato to test it. It runs 1440p 180hz on my PC which is the highest I can test since it seems to auto cap to my refresh rate. It can't be that bad if it runs on Switch 2.
>>
You can tell the character's lines were recorded in total isolation, probably years apart judging by how development hell usually pans out. It's like it's trying to mask the fact that the vocal inflection is all off by putting on airs so you can't be totally sure if it's shit. It never really sounds like they're talking to each other even when they're supposed to be.
>>
>>741467391
>You can tell the character's lines were recorded in total isolation, probably years apart
quite literally not lol, they were hastily recorded over a few days
>>
Why do people think the demo was rushed? I'm not doubting, I just would think he planned to have this demo for like a year or more ahead of time.

the goblin levels would be way cooler if the direction they're facing mattered and required a turn to rotate, instead of being able to instakill you, even if they're facing away.

It's not done. Optimization happens last of the last. You don't want to optimize content that might not make the game. Given how Braid and The Witness ran at release, I believe OotSS will run better than this when it's fully cooked. Even if that makes it take 10 more years to make.
>>
>>741469493
the levels barely use the warriors ability, so you kinda assume it stops being relevant because half of puzzle games is reverse engineering designer intent

He has already begun dumbing down puzzles because he saw some streamers getting stuck at them for longer than 4 minutes and that's bad UX.

Yes, THIS is an example of a puzzle that was too confusing for the targeted playerbase in Jon's opinion. He's likely gonna put barriers across the water everywhere he doesn't want you placing boxes to railroad it further than it already is. That's such a pity since I found this to be one of the best puzzles in terms of simplicity and elegance and found it in the perfect sweet spot in terms of difficulty.

SSS is unironically everything wrong with puzzle games, in revolving everything around tedium which is just painfully unfun.
Meanwhile a far superior game like Baba doesn't need tedium to still have far better puzzles and a concept.
Puzzle game people need to realize they don't have to pretend to worship it.

For the demo being quicker to complete than originally planned; it honestly is for the best for the game selling well, since most people who buy games on steam don't get past the 10 hour mark.
>>
>>741477627
No one copies SSR's puzzle design though, it had very little tutorialisation. "Tedium is unfun" is a meaningless tautology. It's okay to not like difficult games, but actually there aren't many games as difficult as SSR, and OotSS has pretty moderate difficulty.

It's not. If the puzzle needs tedium, it's not good. Tedium is a pejorative in every other aspect of games, but why is it suddenly and only a feature with puzzle games?

If something is fun then it's not tedious. Some people play JRPGs where you grind the same encounters for dozens of hours and don't find them tedious. All you're saying is "being bored isn't fun". You also are not even describing repetitive actions or idle time because those aren't present in OotSS or SSR, so I don't understand what you could find tedious other than SSR's difficulty

I legit think that if you vibe with SSR, it's not that hard. I think mid-game ootss will be as hard and late game even harder.

And I find it unbelievable how little it's been talked about. It's like a glitch in reality.

I think it should be talked about in the mainstream with the same reverence as half-life 2, botw, Elden ring or AT LEAST outer wilds. I unironically think SSR is IMPOSSIBLY good.

No, that's all the heroes. There will be 1 more character in the south world, but she is normal, just like the trader. But there have been fan games based on Heroes of Sokoban with new heroes.
>The Ranger - has a dog that follows her. The dog can push any amount of things, and the Ranger can only push the dog

OotSS got me briefly toying with the idea of trying SSR again until I remembered this is where I dropped it too.

There is actually a level in the full game that uses the mechanic of goblins turning to face the heroes to rotate mirrors.

last one i saw is from February 2025

Beated it

Also found out the buttons at the beginning lower the red force fields. Unfortunately, Blow, master of demo releases, cucked me out getting the third rock so I can't figure out if those tiles do anything special. I figure it will fill out some part of the red crest display somehow.

>what games are these?
The 4 games that were a direct inspiration for the 4 worlds in Order of the Sinking Star:
>North: Heroes of Sokoban
https://sites.math.washington.edu/~ostroff/puzzles/Heroes_of_Sokoban.html
https://sites.math.washington.edu/~ostroff/puzzles/Heroes_of_Sokoban_II_Monsters.html
https://sites.math.washington.edu/~ostroff/puzzles/Heroes_of_Sokoban_III_The_Bard_and_The_Druid.html
>East: Mirror Isles
https://alan.draknek.org/games/puzzlescript/mirrors.php
>West: Promesst
https://silverspaceship.com/promesst/
https://silverspaceship.com/promesst2/
>South: Skipping Stones To Lonely Homes
https://alan.draknek.org/games/puzzlescript/skipping-stones.php
>are they good?
Mostly yes. I don't like Promesst 2 and Promesst 1 is pretty annoying to finish.
>are they on steam?
Promesst games are free to download and everything else in in browser.

Play Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes for some real fucking kino.
>>
>>741483136
Lowering the red barriers will probably let you blast a beam over from the promise or reflect a mirror in the isles, something like that.
>>
How easy is it to softlock yourself on the west side?
>>
>>741483318
I felt like I softlocked myself and refused to redo everything. Then I figured out you can use your gems to push things got myself even further fucked up in getting the 20th gem and eventually got it all figured out. I feel like most situations are reversible there if you try long enough.
>>
>>741483318
Fairly difficult, I'm not even sure there is a soft-lock in the beginning.
Then you get the displacement dagger, and it becomes very easy to softlock yourself.
>>
>>741483318
While it is possible to softlock yourself, it's much more likely it looks like you've softlocked and there's a way out of it.

The large laser puzzle makes me scared to move. after I got the matter teleporter mcguffin,

Since it's a big map with a lot of sub-puzzles, it feels like you could accidentally set up an unwinnable situation and not even notice you've already made a bunch of progress you now have to undo.
>>
>>741483412
>Then I figured out you can use your gems to push things
Like... blocks? Stones?
>>
>>741474523
Blow is not a chud and I don't even know how someone could believe that.
He sucks in an entirely different way than that.
>>
>>741483481
And the laser sources
>>
>>741483470
once you pracriced enough with the lasers it's not that hard, espesically when you see that every gem has clear intended solution
>>
>>741483318
by the time you can break the level there's only a few gems left to gather, as long as you figure out the remaining solutions it's inconsequential to reset from last checkpoint
>>
>>741483509
I have 11 gems on the west side, first set of puzzles, and I feel like I've done everything you can do. Only gems I haven't gotten are the one near the bottom that's trapped in the rock wall by the green emitter, and the one at the top right that's next to another green emitter that takes 2 gems to run
>>
>>741483559
You do know there's a basement, right?
>>
>>741483559
It sounds like to haven't gotten the tool from downstairs yet and don't realize what I meant by pushing things with gems.
>>
>>741483648
That takes 12 gems

it's the same with action games. It improves your percrption and cognition, but only for that particular scenario. For any real-life task, you're out of luck.

>Additionally, in recent years it has become increasingly clear that Jon’s beliefs/priorities and mine are not aligned. He’s adversarial to people talking about privilege and representation, is dismissive of diversity efforts, has dabbled in covid trutherism, and is pro-MAGA.

105 puzzles done. Honestly this is pretty good, the dialogue during the mirror isles is pretty out there but otherwise I found myself enjoying this more than I thought I would. Hopefully Blow actually finishes it this year.

They are relatively easy so far, you can go check original version of Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes, they are probably going to nerf it, even first levels are hard
