Valve caught sneaking viruses
>>
>program allows user generated content
>people download user generated content with viruses
>wtf valve gave me malware?!
Also its because russians and hues use wallpaper engine for piracy by sending "animated wallpapers" which are entire movies/shows/whatever the fuck.
>>
>>741450257
Is Wallpaper Engine produced by Steam? If not, how is it Valve that are the ones "sneaking viruses"?

erm achstually... no one cares chud incel

Have to say that maybe I'm old but I don't see the point of buying some animated wallpaper thing. It was funny novelty thing like 20 years ago but realistically you basically never even see desktop so why would you buy it when it's free thing anyway. Not in pirate way just basic free feature that's been around for literally decades
>>
The funniest part is that everyone is aware about this Epic paid constant anti-Steam raid
>>
I assume the malware is in the wallpaper submissions. Which isn't surprising since you can literally upload .exes.
>>
Never used it, so I'm good.

The retardation of Gabe cum swallowers everybody.
Valve has a responsibility to keep trash off their store. None of you would give any other company that had this happen a pass, and everybody knows it.
>>
>>741451164
Yeah, I don't really get it, especially since at least I never even see my wallpaper. It's always either browser or video game on it.
>>
>>741451731
The trash isn't on the store actually. You go into the user created content section and get user created content.
Specifically this was infecting coomer wallpapers with chinese names that downloaded exes you had to run.
This is the modern equivalent of someone downloading 'naked_lara_craft.jpg.png.avi.exe' in limewire and double clicking it.
>>
>>741451164
They're cool for putting an animated video up in the background.
I use Rainmeter as a better way of watching my storage capacity or CPU temps.

I see my main desktop often enough and I like wallpapers with depth, so giving them some movement or effects adds to the comfy level.
That said, I never use community wallpapers so these things aren't relevant to me. I have a massive art folder so I just find an image I like, do a little something in the effect editor and throw it on my desktop. I only change it like once a year.

>Valve has a responsibility to keep trash off their store.
And they do. Wallpaper Engine ITSELF isn't the malware, the malware vector comes from the content WITHIN Wallpaper Engine.

This is like blaming Google Play for an app that downloads Malware from a third party when the app itself has no malware (just a curl function that grabs malware if you point it at a malware url to curl from).

And being fair to Valve: Google Play has WAYYYYYY more sketchy malware applications on their storefront despite their automatic scanning than Valve does on Steam.
>>
>>741454475

Cunt. Funny how often Valve's been getting hounded by everyone ever since Gaben spanked a Rothschild.

Anyway,

>some of the third world uses Wallpaper Engine as a workaround past laws and firewalls too
>commonly use the service for cheeky shit like transferring files
>barely anyone uses WE as actual wallpaper software

>>

Which they don't bother with, hence the NUMEROUS asset flips (possible malware vectors [if you want to be dishonest, most of them aren't going to be if we're being honest]), and abandoned shit that never takes off Early Access or delists themselves to stop sales from people that buy into their dead/paused developed titles.

You (indies) can be pissed about "Steam Greenlight" all you want, but at least the system worked in that finished shit would release without "this title hasn't been updated in 6 years, are you sure you want to buy this 'Early Access' title? :(" notice on them.

>and program formats.
WHY. THE. FUCK. IS. AN. .EXE. A. FUCKING. ANIMATED. .GIF!?

This isn't "stupid" this is a basic fucking question.

.EXE IS A FUCKING EXECUTABLE. IT'S IN THE GODDAMN NAME.

"Program/Application EXEcutable." **IT SHOULD NOT BE** a "wallpaper." That is not the filetypes purpose.

WHY. THE. FUCK. is "Wallpaper Engine" using .exe/application files?

Being generous, it should be using:

-.mp4
-.avi

And other movie formats if .gif/animation image files are needed. It should NOT be using an application format.
>>
I just get my wallpaper the old fashioned way: Google image search. What exactly is the purpose of Wallpaper Engine?

Never used steam's wallpaper engine myself, but those exes probably have some kind of interaction and aren't just a video loop.
The interaction might be to react to user input, like clicking them makes them do something, or maybe they read some system stats or get the weather from the internet like the ricer applets do.
>>
>>741456176
The legit application "wallpapers" are typically silly interact-able minigames like clicking on cute sheep that hop around your desktop or some shit. Those are in their own "Application" category that's filtered by default.

I assume the application wallpaper is some form of interactive background image, which in practice is a program that runs on boot and puts something on your desktop like those ancient interactive buddies, except here it's one big image.
I can also immediately see why it's turned off by default; shit sounds taxing on the PC and god only knows what an executable program does outside your vision.
>>
>>741456176
>WHY. THE. FUCK. IS. AN. .EXE. A. FUCKING. ANIMATED. .GIF!?
it's not???? the ones that are exes let you interact with the wallpaper, though you can also do that with scenes (proprietary wallpaper engine format) which are much more secure and they recommend people use that. exes are just an option.
