Checkmate Showdown was the same. Awesome concept (Chess but you fight when you try to take and each piece is intentionally balanced based on its usefulness) but the actual fighting was just okay. This is a step up in some ways but I'm not expecting a top-tier fighting game system.

>Great, Will Get

>Signy & Mino Against All Gods
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3202580/Signy__Mino_Against_All_Gods_Demo/RPG where you build juggle combos out of limited moves with some aspects of timing. Scratches the itch of SRWOGS Endless Frontier/Project X Zone games with a bit of Paper Mario. Been excited for this one for a while.

>Dewdrop
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4163480/Dewdrop/
If that one Electroplankton minigame with the tadpoles and leaves was a physics puzzler. The last couple puzzles feel great when you get a solution that sounds good and there's a pretty deep sandbox mode.

>Truck-kun is Supporting Me from Another World?!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3642010/Truckkun_is_Supporting_Me_from_Another_World/
Comes off like a meme but the actual mechanics are super engaging and reward constant pivoting to complete objectives, make deliveries, gain time, maximize enemies defeated, etc. with that getting easier as you learn the controls and the map. Probably the best game from Strange Scaffold so far and my favorite demo so far too.

>Lurruna
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4315900/LURRUNA__The_Island_of_Towering_Automatons/
Classicvania (specifically Rondo's movement options) but you throw bombs and instead of subweapons you use your ammo to buff your bombs. Feels how it should, very pastel visuals and Genesis-sounding OST. Newest game from PD_CGT who has just not missed yet (Disaster Arms is phenomenal and his other two games are quite good).

>Hyper Bun Buster: Rocket Hammer Action
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3605570/Hyper_Bun_Buster_Rocket_Hammer_Action/
Super simple, slick single-screen arcade action game. Uses a mixture of Bomberman bomb kicking and Ys bump combat with a simple & effective scoring system. Genuinely difficult as well, I beat the demo on the normal difficulty after the hard equivalent was starting to filter me at the end of stage 2. Same dev made Chessplosion which was pretty neat.

>HYPER DETONATOR
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3965780/HYPER_DETONATOR/
Simple twin-stick but your enemies are just a shifting blob with weakspots that explode. Presentation is perfect, simple and deep with some good risk/reward. Gives me Super Hexagon vibes and that's VERY good.

>Blades & Battles
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4332880/Blades__Battles_Demo/
The only good beat-em-up demo this Fest, all the others were varying levels of ass. You can feel the various inspirations without making this feel derivative, the enemies are aggressive but not cheap, good balance between defense/offense/movement. The first boss is piss-easy and the graphics are a little muddy but otherwise this is very good.

>Choo Choo Defenders
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4692540/Choo_Choo_Defenders_Demo/
TD where you build a track for your train to lap as it attacks enemies. You can also transport people and cargo and route efficiently for that. Sprites are very smooth and appealing, visual effects when you clear a wave are great. Only issue is that upgrades during stages are in the fucking "pick one of three cards" style you see in roguelites even though this isn't one. Otherwise, really great spin on the genre.

>FISH
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4312850/FISH/
Insane presentation that comes across as nothing but memes but the controls for the run & gun are really snappy and the enemies/bosses are just aggressive enough at least for the early stages.

>Good or Interesting, Wishlisted

>BREKEKEKEX
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4012150/BREKEKEKEX/
Boy with pitchfork beats up frogs in a swamp. Way too early for NextFest but shows a ton of promise. I couldn't get a perfect handle on the controls or camera, but the core combat looks and feels solid and the enemies are VERY aggressive. Closest comparison is genuinely Kill La Kill IF.
>>
>>741460339
>Normal Golf Game
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4663130/Normal_Golf_Game_Demo/
Intentionally convoluted control scheme for a golf game with weird objectives. Has FMV sprites for the player character which is neat. Made by the guy who created Fruit Ninja.

>Slayblade
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4682290/Slayblade_Demo/
Best control scheme for a Beyblade-type game I've seen and has a great style. Very obviously evoking DS-era low-poly + sprites and has some very nice chill music.

>B.A.S.E.D - Ball Ascension Squadron Elite Division
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4015070/BASED/
You hit a big ball up a bunch of floors and try not to let hit hit the ground from too high a height too many times, and you can do 4-player co-op as well as solo. Controls are somewhere between Mega Man Zero and Smash. Solid sprites and music, lots of potential. Also has a Chao Garden stapled to it?

>70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4120310/70sstyle_Robot_Anime_GeppyX/
Super high-effort remaster of a very soulful but messily-designed PS1 shmup. Focus is more on the presentation so there's a LOT of cutscenes (mostly cel animation with some CG/in-engine stuff). Fun enough to play through but I imagine going for a 1cc would suck.

>Project Turboblast
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3148560/Project_TurboBlast/
After seeing the mascot for this posted 1000 times I finally played it and yeah it's good. I do like how you bank Turbos rather than using them only when you let go of a Drift, but you're fucked if you ever stop using it so it's really more of a check on how often you can build it. The ass you can put on your driver is no joke though.

>DekaDuck
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3715040/DekaDuck/
Solid Mega Man X-like that isn't super derivative and has sleek art. Gimmick is the ability to grab enemies and throw them in 8 directions, so a bit of Mischief Makers.

>Worth Checking Out, but I Didn't Wishlist

>Kick
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4769220/Kick_Demo/
Sidescrolling game where you have to kick a ball around with you as you complete objectives. Controls and physics weren't quite tight enough for what it wants to do and there was pop-in on level select for some reason.

>SWAT God
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4293000/SWAT_God/
Very simple game where your character is perfectly matched to your mouse movement and you need to deal with a group of enemies. Very Flash game in terms of look and feel but there's a lot of levels and you can feel how snappy it all is.

>Hard Edge - War Zone
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4612870/Hard_Edge__War_Zone/
Reboot of Sunsoft's weird PS1 RE clone as a deckbuilder SRPG. I don't get it either but the character models are charmingly early-6th-gen.

>Changeable Guardian ESTIQUE
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4078160/Changeable_Guardian_ESTIQUE/
8-bit shmup with good art (mechs and girls, what you'd expect) and presented as if it was a collected re-release of both the Famicom & NES versions of an actual game. Definitely seems easy based on Stage 1 but it could ramp up.

>EGO
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3692680/EGO/
Insane art and visual style, even more insane controls that made no sense and wasn't helped by the tutorial having no text. I wish I understood what it wanted because it looks so interesting but it also mostly seems like a speed-focused platformer which aren't usually my bag to be fair.

>ROBO GAL: Gaga Delta Lady
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3266440/RoboGAL_Gaga_Delta_Lady__Demo/
Not even pretending it's not Classic Mega Man and it's a decent one of those. The stage gimmicks in the demo are mildly interesting and the plant boss has a surprisingly large moveset. If you need the itch scratched this will do it.
>>
Rizz dungeon is so fucking confusing

>>
>>741460482
>BURN-9
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4377480/Burn9/
MGS but you're the one on comms guiding the operative. Basically just a CYOA with abstracted stealth missions. Writing is hit or miss but good enough. The operative you help is cute.

>NAMCO Legendary Mountains
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4459850/NAMCO_LEGENDARY_Mountains/
Suika Game but with 3D physics objects in a bowl and they're voxel sprites of 80s Namco games. That's it. It's polished at least. If this is more than 5 bucks it's a scam.

>Bad, Avoid These

>Lady Death Demonicron
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2954890/Lady_Death_Demonicron/
Just like this team's last game this beat-em-up is very stiff and unresponsive with confusing mechanics and awful enemy/boss design. They clearly love the IP but they can't make a good game.

>XeGradeR PLUS
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4383380/XeGrader_plus_Demo/
The creator of Hydlide made this and it's really just a super basic single-screen shmup with a fantasy coat of paint. The ONLY idea it has is making you traverse a tiny maze to push buttons to reveal an item for points. Sprites are nice but that's it.

>HYPERFIGHT 2
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4593460/HYPERFIGHT_2_Demo/
One of those fighters that tries to reinvent the wheel with a different wincon and small movelists. Didn't really seem that interesting and the sprites were middling to poor.

>Garuda Emblem
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3773640/Garuda_Emblem_Demo/
A River City Ransom clone made by people who clearly don't know what makes a good beat-em-up. Everything is sluggish, imprecise and definitely didn't get even one pass for balance.

>The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4718570/The_Walking_Dead_Streets_of_Survival_Demo/
Actual dogshit. Meant to look like a beat-em-up but it's cooldown/dodgeroll/scavenge bullshit with a side view. Low-poly environments look decent but it plays so fucking bad.
>>
>>741460579
That's sad to the creator of Hydlide (never played it)

I am so happy with Simons Quest. Waited years for it and the demo alone delivered. Is Castlevania 2 if it was good. Shares many similarities with the classics. Sub weapons all behave the same way, heart ammunition, the runes to powered them up, the towns, npcs, the save system in the church, day and night with enhanced monsters, quests and secrets. It even shares a similar story, sort of. Dracula invades and a bunch of people start training to kill him. Before you start your adventure you receive the news that some other vampire hunter killed Dracula first and spread his body parts all over the world to prevent resurrection.

But Simon is so pissed off he spent years training that the main goal of the game is REVIVE Dracula to kill him again lol.
>>
>>741453504
I played on Normal and never got a game over. In terms of difficulty, it's middle of the road for classic Mega Man standards.
>>
Oh I forgot to include one somehow, this one got a wishlist from me:

>OFFBEAT
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4468030/OFFBEAT/
You get a free sequencer and start taking commissions as a freelance composer. The tools are pretty simple but open-ended and the visuals are nice. The first thing the game tells you is that every song you make with it is yours to do with as you wish and it directs you to the folder they're saved in which is nice.

>>741461090
I'm happy this game exists but as someone who played Castlevania II as their first game, no thanks. I do think it's fun how the game grades you on how cool you look when you grab an orb post-boss though, that's real "I know Castlevania" shit.
>>

>>
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3773640/Garuda_Emblem_Demo/
It was better than expected, it does everything it need to do well, except that sometimes the enemy gets bugged and start to do attack the air or do nothing like the boss at the second phase, I hope it gets more polished in that regard. Also it looks like it has more techniques with a skill tree that is not available in the demo

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2548880/Divine_Frequency/
Holy shit this good. I though it would have been more spoopy but is more about dread than anything, it didn't have any jumpscare jack-in-the-box style. The designs and atmosphere are top notch and love me the green pill mambo jambo. There was a single boss and a optional duel boss which is maybe Soulslike but I won't say that in a bad way, it was short and parry focused. I can't wait to see what else it does.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4605040/Drown_World/
Didn't have fun with this one, is a jetpack mining game with liquid physics, thing is that it rains and fills everything with water and there is no air tank power up, sand for some reason damage, I think it got turned into glass and it damage you at contact. Didn't like it.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4319270/Ambroise_Niflette__the_Gleaned_Bell_Demo/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgNPCKuX9ds

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4261810/Marsupilami_2__Salsa_Palombia__Demo/
It crashed on the second level. Is a pltformer alright, is a classic one, a scrimblo. I suppose it was good, maybe if you like this kind of games, not my cup of tea. It was easy so far as half the second level, Has a decent range of movements between 3 characters.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4442640/Rizz_Dungeon_Skeleton_Key_to_My_Heart_Demo/
Somehow funny I suppose, not my style and now ask myself why I downloaded this, maybe because I like SMT shit? anyway, real issue beside this not pandering me is that the combat is fucking slow, it has as many text boxes as pokemon.

I really like beat'em up to a fault, and do hold hope the things you can buy in the full game maybe spice things up. I see where you're coming from and you've got good taste in the classics at least. I just feel like you need at some of the fundamentals down to really make a beat-em-up feel right. Blades & Battles is by far the best beat-em-up from this Fest that I've seen, you'll probably like it since it definitely feels like if you injected Golden Axe with some of that mid-late-90s beat-em-up movement and combo structure.

I wish Grimwah's UI wasn't a functional disaster.

Anyone tried Oh! Robot?

This game didn't much traction in this Steam Next Fest which is just a shame
>>
>>741465825
I think I played a demo for that like a year ago, I don't remember it being particularly interesting
>>
>>741465825
I tried it in a previous next fest, it didn't really make me want to actually get it.
>>

It's all AI or Malware.
>>
>Kernel Hearts
Genshin but roguelike. Puts you in a huge area and gives you 5 minutes to explore before you start getting destroyed.
>LarsGadiel
Decent but it's a NES-style metroidvania.
>Edge of Memories
Hot main character but terrible combat with the spongiest enemies ever, stopped after I got multiple softlocks near the end of the demo.

Just here to tell you games you can skip. Still have Order of the Sinking Star and About Fishing to complete, along with a few others. I guess if they're good I'll promote them.

File deleted.

Ah fuck my hands.
There are 17 more tracks available in the demo in just stages 3-4.
The need to play more is there, but the flesh is weak.

>>741466848
Woopsies haha
>>
>>741464527
Yeah I played it, I liked, just fucking hated that the dumb fuck dec disabled coop for the demo. I wnjoyed the bosses in that game, something most beu fail at. I do think Garuda have a change to be better if the shop does add some mechanics and moves, if it is only passives and stats or basic ass moves, it will be 6/10 with luck.

Another things to say, fucking hate that Call in the vampires was the only beat'em up that let me play coop with a single controller and a keyboard and that game is dogshit.

>Truck-Kun and FISH seem like complete memes riding on their premise/presentation
>Two of the most fun demos this time around
Nice to be pleasantly surprised.
>>
>>741465825
Top down twin-stick shooters are the least interesting kind of action game.
>>
>slayblade
why does this have so many people playing? the demo is 6 minutes long
>>
>>741467929
The people yearn for a good Beyblade game. Every single official attempt from its original heyday to now has sucked.
>>
what killed the hype?
>>
>>741468293
ai slop oversaturation
it will only get worse as the years pass

I like cute witch girls but not factorio

Deluge of ai sloppa.
>>
>>741468095
it has "illegal battles", but they don't have the raw tactile feeling of fucking destroying another beyblade
when I was a kid, we did it on concrete and had screws or nails instead of the bits at the bottom
landing it directly on another beyblade would actually tear it to pieces
they got banned after someone was injured
>>
>>741468654
>>741468861
They need to make Generative AI a tag so we can filter it (and dumbasses can search for it to stay in their bubble).

Any good Wuxia/Xianxia/Cultivation demo?

I really want to like this game, it's got some similarities to Tombwater from last next fest, which I loved.
But the environment is so overcluttered that it borders on unplayable. I barely know where I can even walk or where enemies are. And the menus are not much better. I almost want to recommend trying it just to see how bad an unrestrained (but actually quite nice) art direction can go.
>>
>>741469437
Use the filter wuxia and xianxia got added in tags recently there is only a few to go over yourself

currently wishing this was a real game (and had lock-on) instead of extraction slop
>>
>>741470508
this game immediately looked like a nightreign clone, a shameless one at that
>>
>>741470086
I thought the environment looked pretty good, what put me off was the UI being a huge pain to deal with and the combat feeling mediocre. The writing was typical millennial fare too.

I legit cannot be bothered to check every single fucking game whether or not they slopped it up. We need a slop filter yesterday.

Kusan was way more based furshit than whatever this is probably

I dunno man, the third patreon pirate site just came up and it's three for three with blatant furry domains.
Finding it hard to hate furries right now (though I'll keep trying).
>>
>>741472327
it's even more overt this time too, it's hilarious

what's the mirage feathers or cicadamata of this next fest

Playing this demo made me think how much this game specifically panders to eastern euro guro furries
It's a VERY specific feeling, i'm not sure why but east euros specifically seem to love this type of torture porn genre
