Speculation is that it's a dry run for a potential version of achievements. You do a set of challenges across different DK titles and get digital trading cards. But only for a limited window, only if you have access to all the games in it, and only on Switch 2.
Datamining has found some of the older NES games in NSO have something similar planned.

I finally got around to doing these. My thoughts:
>Retro challenges are just "beat this level from the game". They give you full access to rewinding, which I guess is for the children but it's really challenging if you're allowed to do that.
